1 May 2013 TRIANGULAR FOREST LAKE MASONIC LODGE #344 Greetings Brethren, THE MASTERS COLUMN BEHOLD how good and pleasant it is to see brethren dwell together in unity! What a busy month we had in April, (and still to come at this writing)! It very enjoyable to see so many show-up at the April stated meeting and take part in the most enjoyable spaghetti dinner beforehand made by Mike and Patty Schultz. The spaghetti was home-made and very delicious!! Thanks Mike and Patty. We had quite a busy evening filled with a couple of special events that took place. To start things off we first had the Girl Scouts dropped off a truck load (the mother load) of Girl Scout cookies (over a thousand boxes). We had plenty of extra helping hands from the very excited Girl Scouts and their Scout leaders getting them unloaded and brought down stairs and stacked. So thank you for those of you who also helped carry them down. A special recognition to John Ede for his efforts who coordinated this very successful project. I tell you with no exaggeration that there was a Mountain of cookies when they were stacked up which was a site to see, very impressive. The other special event was a LEO program that followed the dinner that took place upstairs in the lodge room. This was a Robotics demonstration by Brother Joe Viavattine and his son from Garnet Lodge No The specially design robot
2 was made to remotely maneuver around and throw Frisbees! Next we hope that our lodge was well represented at the GL 160 th Annual Communication meeting in Brooklyn Park. As stated last month this is a very unique opportunity we have to be a part of, as well as showing Brother Dave Olson our support. More information to share following the event. Please note that with the slight delay with the weather conditions we ve decided to postponed the Lodge Cleanup day from April to May 11 th at 8:00 am weather permitting with May 20 th as a back-up day. There will be some food involved as you may imagine to sustain the labors. Hope to see you there to give a hand or just to supervise. From our Metroeast Area Deputy Warren White; As of our meeting this weekend we also say farewell to WB Foster Solem as our Area Custodian. WB Keith Reierson, PM of AL5, is stepping up to the role of ME Area Custodian. Also, WB Mike Hill, our District Representative for District 8, is stepping down after many years of service to the Craft for our district. On behalf of all the brothers here at FL Lodge #344, we want to say THANKS for your dedication and devoted work WB Mike! And congratulations on your next venture with The Grand Lodge as the new incoming Grand Lodge Education Officer. Need a ride? Call the lodge or any brother; we re here to help support you also. Take Care and hope to see you all soon. Ponderism: If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a song about him? Fraternally yours, WM David W. Scott From the West Greetings. No serious or bad news on some of the member's health this month. That's a good thing. WB John Maddox is doing well and looking forward to working on his golf swing when he returns to Minnesota. WB Walter Brown has finished his cancer treatments - he'll get the results back after they check him out in a few weeks. Br. Bob Holden has been busy - he recommended a candidate to join us and has been in contact with a few others interested in our Lodge. Thanks, Bob - well done! We have begun welcoming back our 'migratory' brethren. There were a couple of tanned faces on the sidelines this past meeting. Welcome back - time to get to work. We will have a busy Spring and early Summer season as noted in the Master's calendar. We hope to see many more friendly faces for our Pancake Breakfasts and other functions. June will be a busy month for us on the charity and community service front, as we will present our annual scholarships at Forest Lake High School and host a Pancake Breakfast to support the Relay for Life. The June Pancake Breakfast is run during Lake Fest. That weekend should be a fun family time (and busy for those of us working the breakfast, based on last year's attendance). Pass the information along to your friends and family in the area. And have them stop by the Lodge for some pancakes and sausage! Fraternally, Bill Brown, SD
3 From the South Brethren, As I writing this article RWB Dave Olson is preparing for his installation at Gand Lodge Communication as Grand Master of Minnesota. Congratulations Dave. We at Forest Lake Lodge #344 are honored that you are a very active member of our Lodge and that you will also be serving as the Grand Master. We all wish you a very good year and will support you any way that we can. At our last Stated Meeting we had a very busy night. The Girl Scouts brought the cookies we had purchased for the Ronald McDonald House. We had cookies stacked from floor to ceiling. I m not sure the exact number of boxes there were but it was a lot. Patty, Mike Perreault, Luke Ulstad, Sally and myself fed everyone spaghetti, which everyone said was the best. We also had a table overflowing with deserts. Just prior to the meeting we had a LEO presentation by WB Joe Viavattine and his son Joey, on First Robotics, which is a science program for kids 14 to 18. The kids are mentored by people in industry to make a robot for competition. They are given a set of instructions on the type of robot to build and they have six weeks to hand in their robot. This year they had to build a robot that could shoot a frisbee at three different targets, which range from easy to hard and to do this against an opponent. The robot scoring the most points would advance until there was a winner. The Girl Scouts really enjoyed this demonstration. There was also a petition read at the meeting, so it looks like May or June we will be starting the degree work. We have one candidate that is ready to start and he will take his EA degree at Newport Lodge at the EA Table Lodge. This came up kind of sudden, but everything fell into place. They were looking for a candidate and we had one ready for their table lodge. This occurred on April 19 th. Will have more details at the next Stated Meeting. Patty and I visited the Mora Lodge on April 7 th for their Swedish pancake breakfast. These are pancakes similar to ours rolled up with strawberries and whip cream on top, yummy. As many of you know they had a fire last year, so they had to rebuild. Their lodge is all on one level and they did a great job in their design. That is all for now. Hope to see you all at the pancake breakfast on April 28 th.
