From Your Chapter Directors Spring is right around the corner and Chapter X is ready to ride. Most of us rode a lot in February due to the pleasant weather and some rode the entire winter months. For those that have been riding and those who waited for warmer weather plan to attend the Chapter Garage Meet Saturday, March 11 th to get your bikes ready for the riding season. Some of the things accomplished at previous Garage Meets are oil changes, installed lights, changed tires, installed chrome, deer horns, etc., and of course congregate and eat. This is always a fun day; so even if no work is needed on your bike, come and enjoy the day with friends. While at it gather up all your no longer needed bike parts and take them to H2 Swap Meet in Mebane on March 18 th. Rocky Mount, NC-Z Blessing of the Bike is on Saturday April, 8 th. Make plans to attend both events. GWRRA Chapters are strong and vibrant because of members attending Chapter Gatherings and participating at each other s fund raisers. Yes, 50/50 ticket sales and registration fees at Chapter events are the backbone to the financial health of a Chapter. Thank you for your support of NC-X and for participating and supporting with other Chapters when you are able to do so. Lena has put out a challenge for members to write articles for the Chapter newsletter. An article about a ride, a vacation, a family activity, a tech article, a blessing in your life or just anything you want to share with the membership that you think would be an interesting read. The X Files is your newsletter and we would like to publish articles from you. Joy has put together a 5 th weekend camping trip for April 28 th, 29 th and 30 th at Grandfather Mountain Campground in Banner Elk, NC. Pull out your Tent, Popup, and RV or if sleeping outside is not for you there are cabins available. Can t come on Friday, come on up Saturday. This will be our first Chapter camping trip and it should be fun; not to mention mountain riding. We will be getting WOtS Grand Prize tickets soon. We should have them at our March gathering. Tickets are $1 each this year so there will be more to sell. Everybody s help is needed to sell tickets. Grand Prizes are 2017 Goldwing (Blue), $2200 voucher toward a CSC Escapade trailer and a Hartco custom seat. We are asking each X member to start with 50 tickets. Some may desire more and that is okay. Sell a bunch and buy a bunch. There will be a winner of a 2017 Goldwing, it is possible; just ask us. Entertainment this year is a fashion show. We will meet soon to figure out a dressing strategy and runway style. It has been suggested to be like Little House on the Prairie. Page 3 of 30

While out and about be friendly to others. Let the public know that GWRRA members are safe, responsible and caring motorcycle riders. People will admire your beautiful Gold Wings, Trikes and other brand Motorcycles. Your positive attitude and friendly conversation will go a long ways in dispelling some of the myth of motorcyclists. Brad our Ride Coordinator and Joy our Membership Enhancement Coordinator have several planned fun rides, events and activities this year. We only ask that you try to attend as many as possible. Until next month, have fun and ride safe! John & Lena Yup, it is still winter and cold. This does not mean that there are things you can do to get ready for the spring, summer and fall full on riding season. Yes, spring, summer and fall equal one riding season. Work on your bike(s.) Keep them ready and set yourself up for a safe and wonderful ride. Change the oil and filter at the end of fall. If you have not done this, do it now. For those of you with a Gold Wing, this is the only thing that Honda made easy. Taking out the old oil and filter helps get rid of the bad things that run through your engine. New oil is the cheapest thing you can do to save your engine and everything else that the oil protects. Read this as it is cheaper to change your oil than change your engine. Do not use the cheap stuff...the few dollars you spend on oil will come back to help you later. If you do not know how to change your own oil, ask...chapter X members are a great resource to have in the palm of your hands and your typing fingers. Now that you set up your bike for winter...rode a few times and are ready to get going for the full season, change your oil again. It may sound like you are wasting some time and money, but the winter air with all the temperature fluctuations can do a number on any grade oil, some less than others. Your choice. As to what oil you choose...oh my, there are so many oils to choose from. Everyone you ask may have their own thoughts. Do some research, ask your chapter members. Just make sure you use oil designed for motorcycle use. Check your tires. Did you take the fall air out and put in winter air? E.g. check the tire pressure and make sure it is at your specs. Different tires require different pressures. How does your tread look? I mean really look at it. Will your tires hold you Page 4 of 30

Page 5 of 30 The X Files March 2017 on the road during a turn or emergency move/swerve? Tires are what hold you to the roadway. Now is a great time to have your tires changed. Most dealers have winter sales and have time to change your tires if need be. How are your brakes? Are your using a good brake pad? What type of brake pad you use is like what kind of oil you pick. Just check your brake pads, make sure that you have more than the minimum depth of pad on your bike. If you are close, than change the pads now. Doing it now, allows for more time to ride during the season, as you are not spending ridding time changing or having someone else change your brake pads. Check all your other fluids, brake, clutch, front fork and anything else you can find. Getting your bike ready now will allow you to get going sooner when the weather gets to riding temperatures. How are your lights? Do they all work? Do you have a haze over your headlights? Check them now and check them often. We really do need to be seen as we go down the road. Same goes for your horn(s.) If you are not happy with the sound or how loud your horn is, then do something about it. There are so many options for a better horn that you can investigate. Get your bike ready now. Keep your bike ready. Happy bike, happy riding. Garage Meet, March 11 th. Rosy Rosenthal Charter Chapter Member ******************************************************************************** Motorcycle Humor Talking Dog A man sees a sign in front of a house: "Talking Dog for Sale." He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the backyard. He goes into the backyard and sees a black mutt just sitting there. "You talk?" he asks. "Yep," the mutt replies. "So, what's your story?" The mutt looks up and says, "Well, I discovered this gift as a young puppy and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping."

"I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. But, the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger and I wanted to settle down." "So, I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals." "Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired." The man is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. The owner says, "Ten dollars." The guy says, "This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?" The owner replies, "He's such a liar. He didn't do any of that stuff." Roger Turner From Your MEP Officers Week Extravaganza 2/11-2/19 Just one week past Valentine s Day, and 5 out of the past 7 days have presented unseasonably favorable weather for riding, so have you been out? Glenn and I made a trip to the mountains to visit four chapters in one weekend- yep you heard that right in 1! And we learned you just never know what is going to happen when you visit another chapter. 1 st The morning after arriving in Asheville, and undeterred by the cooler temperatures -more honestly without choice- we boarded our bikes for the short ride to the Hendersonville gathering. (Thank goodness someone had done a great job of planning! We were only about a mile away) Arriving at the first gathering promptly at 9:00 for breakfast, I met an older-than-me-gentleman, who had apparently been inactive in the Hendersonville chapter for some time. In fact, he said he was here to reacquaint with old friends and make new ones, of which I am proud to claim that honor. He shared his life story as we stood in the breakfast made-to-order line, and now Glenn and I have a standing invitation to join him at Myrtle Beach (his second home). I keep saying over and over You meet the nicest people on a Goldwing. It goes without saying that also means you meet the nicest people at the Goldwing gatherings. So, don t be timid, get on out there and start meeting all these great people and you just Page 6 of 30

might land an invite to MB or maybe even something more grand! But for sure I bet you wind up with a new friend. 2 nd With the Hendersonville meeting over at 11:00 we headed on over to the Forest City Chapter (now aka the Boiling Springs chapter.) The weather was warmer, the ride only about an hour and we were early! But what a view, don t you think? Main Street lined with Goldwings During the course of the meeting Charlie Cook, a longtime member, took the floor and talked about family, what is family, who is family, and what families do concluding that because the Goldwingers are his family, he wanted all his family with him for this important event. He pulled out a ring and asked Anne to marry him! During their extended embrace, someone called out She didn t say yes! Unforgettably, she turned on her heels responding: I ve been saying yes for three weeks. It just took that long for him to ask me! Amid the many and loudly touted congratulations, the room also filled with jokes about Charlie growing the chapter in such a novel way. You just never know what s going to happen at a chapter meeting! So, go prepared for something wonderful. 3 rd With the Boiling Springs gathering ending, it s time to jaunt to another restaurant, this time in Morganton. Dear reader, are you realizing that all we did was go from restaurant to restaurant? We all (did I fail to mention that we were there with 4 other COYs?) felt like stuffed pigs yet we all dutifully kept eating. While here Jerry Herman, ADD of the West, promised that he would not repeat all the details of WOtS or the ice cream ride for the third time. You see there was a roll tide, or a building momentum happening. As we left one chapter, many members followed us to the next, and so on. Upon inquiring, I learned this was not the norm; the crowd was following the Eastern couples. In this migration, Glenn and I were amazed to see the number of people who chose to purchase 50/50 tickets or wing nut tickets for their Page 7 of 30

Chapter; and we so loved the idea that we decided to do the same. You just never know the impact you are making on someone else. So, be willing to influence others and to be influenced yourself. 4 th Finally we had our first and only mountain ride Sunday morning. This lovely - despite drastic temperature changes- journey ended with us again arriving a bit early for Sunday s only gathering, Hickory. And Jerry kept his promise; he kept his remarks to a minimum, approximately 3 minutes. Since there had been so many good things happening all around, and since I have learned to expect good things, and because I found a few laundered dollars in my jeans pocket with which to buy tickets for the chapter, and because I m in Chapter X where John and Lena win everything, I felt certain that fate was shining on me and X would win the wing nut game (very similar to our marble game) which had a kitty of $1313, and less than 20 wing nuts. And are you ready? MY TICKET WAS CALLED!! Not! However, the lady with the winning ticket failed to draw the gold wing nut! Next month the pot begins at $1313 and surely there will be an additional $40 or more added to that. So, if you are feeling lucky ride on up and support the Hickory chapter next month. You just never know what fate will bring; so, just go for it; but, please don t be disappointed when it doesn t bring what you want. As for me, I need to hang out more with the Bryant s; their luck has not yet rubbed off on me. What great things happened? An open invite to MB, a delightful mountain ride, Glenn and I learned a way to be more generous, we witnessed unbridled compassion (which I didn t describe, but just trust me on this one) and most importantly new friendships. Yes, great things did happen on this weekend extravaganza! Joy & Glenn, Your MEC Officers Special Invite to All.. Chinese Auction or ticket sales: Bring your $1 bills. 10 From Your Chapter Couple of the Year Page 10 of 30 WESTERLY WINDS UNDER OUR WINGS (Four Western NC Chapter Visitations in One Weekend) The primary duty of the Chapter Couple of the Year (COY) is to have fun and be you. Additionally, you are an ambassador for your chapter supporting and visiting other chapters, thereby encouraging them to come visit and support your chapter. Many Chapter Couples set a goal of trying to visit all of the chapters in their district at least once during the year. There are twenty-nine chapters in the North Carolina District; 11 in the East, 9 in Central and 9 in the West. Certainly, an ambitious goal worthy of a marathon runner. Sprinting out of the starting box is a questionable way to run a marathon. However, that seems to be just what Joy and I have done. Due to the sun and the moon s unusual alignment (and Morganton s rescheduled meeting because of the Chili Cook-off) there became an almost once in a lifetime opportunity to visit 4 Western Chapters in a single weekend. An opportunity too great to pass up especially considering that the unseasonably warm temperatures provided great riding weather - plus the lure of the mountain roads. Led by our District MEPC (Sue and Charles Langley) and our District COY (Brenda and George Harper) we met up with COY Todd and Sheila Meadows from New Bern along with COY John and Michelle Clancy from Laurinburg to form a band of 10 merry men and women for this lofty quest. Saturday was the crunch day three meetings in one day. This dictated that we drive up on Friday evening and spend the night in Fletcher to be ready for Hendersonville s breakfast meeting at 9:00am. As soon as breakfast was over, it was on the wings for a road trip to Boiling Springs, NC where the Forest City chapter was holding its gathering at 1:00pm. During the gathering we were all shocked when a seasoned member (Charlie Cook) pulled out a ring and proposed marriage to his favorite lady. Luckily, she said yes that could have been really embarrassing. Now that is an activity that not even our unbridled MEC had ever planned for one of our gatherings. Then it was back on the road to Granny s Kitchen in Morganton for the 6:00 pm Morganton chapter gathering.

After that meeting, it was off to the hotel in Hickory and a much welcome respite. We were all overstuffed from three meals and tired from the packed day of activities. Not one person proposed that we should get together for any evening activities not even a game of marbles. Sunday morning arrived with the best yet day of weather. We had almost the entire day available to us before the 5:00pm Hickory chapter meeting. I mapped out an approximately 100-mile loop from Hickory up through Lenoir continuing to Banner Elk before turning West to Linville Falls. We ate lunch at the famous Louise s Rock House Restaurant in Linville Falls before continuing south down to Morganton and then back to Hickory. We have all heard how the weather can be so unpredictable in the mountains. We left Hickory in the warm sunshine, several of us having taken our liners out of our jackets. By the time we were approaching Banner Elk we needed to make wardrobe adjustments. The temperature dropped over 20 degrees, the skies clouded up and the wind became gusty to the point of becoming a riding hazard, especially as you went around the sharp mounting corners. After the Hickory meeting adjourned around 7:00pm it was a night ride back home for all. I must close by saying that we made quite an impression having 10 people from the East visiting as a group to four Western chapters. The West s Assistant District Director, Jerry Herman really expressed his sincere appreciation (four times) for the extraordinary efforts we were making to visit his territory. Mission accomplished! Joy & Glenn Kennedy members@wakeforestwings.org Page 11 of 30

Page 12 of 30 The X Files March 2017 From Your Assistant Chapter Directors As you have likely heard by now, NC-X did very well in the NC GWRRA organization last year. The chapter and chapter members won several District level awards: NC-X won "Chapter of the Year"; this was due to a tremendous effort and involvement/participation of the entire chapter. Glenn Kennedy put in a major effort in keeping the records and submitting the official entry. Thanks to everyone for pulling together, and a special thanks to Glenn for all his work. I believe that NC- X truly is "Chapter of the Year"!!! Lena won "Editor of the Year" for all the work she does in putting together the monthly NC-X Newsletter. While she has lots of help from everyone that submits articles each month, she still has a lot of work to put it all together and to make the final newsletter what it is. Lena, thanks for all you do. John and Lena won as "Chapter Directors of the Year". This is a well-deserved award. John and Lena put a lot of love and effort into NC-X. They are a great couple, and it is an honor to know, work and ride with them. John won the 2016 Goldwing at Wings Over The Smokies last September. It was great to see someone win the Goldwing that will actually use it and not just try to sell it to make a quick buck. John, enjoy years of riding the new Wing! While this doesn't really fit in the "District Award" category, it still is sometime to remember and brag about. Talk about having a great year, what could NC-X do in 2017 to top what NC-X accomplished in 2016? "Regional Chapter of the Year", "Regional Editor of the Year" and "Regional Chapter Directors of the Year", and maybe "District Couple of the Year" with Glenn and Joy? Before I forget, I want to thank John and Lena for their leadership of NC-X last year. John and Lena are quick to give the credit to the member of NC-X for the success and FUN we had in 2016, but without our great leaders we would be like all the other chapters instead of being the BEST! We love both of you and look forward to a great I was a day late in turning in my ACD article this month, which you would think is a bad thing. However, because I am a day late I can include something in my article about the NC-C2 (Smithfield) Chili Cook-off which was held yesterday (Saturday 2/25/2017). As always, the Chili Cook-off was a huge success. If you attended you know it was a lot of FUN. By the way, NC-X had 12 attendees (John B., Lena, Joy, Glenn, Brad, André, Debra, Jimmy, John R., Sue, Helen [Sue's Mom], and me). If you didn't attend, you missed the FUN. There was FUN playing games, the chili was very

good, and the time with friends is the best part. Not to mention the beautiful weather we had. No one from NC-X won for their chili, though we did have at least two entries. We even had some of our members win some of the door prizes. Sue won two (Snowman pillows and a shawl), Helen won a pillow, and André won a fancy measuring/bowl set. All in all, a great day. If you didn't attend, plan to attend next year. It should be the last Saturday in February Roger & Sue Right Gear While at WOTS last year I wanted to get a pair of mesh riding paints for summer riding. The vendor let me try on all the pants I wanted to find out the size that I needed. He did not have a good fit for me so I ordered the size that he said should fit. With the warm temperature we have had recently I decided to try them on for size. I held them up against me to check the length and it seem to be right. I tried them on and they fit; I said great. Now it is time to go on a ride. I mounted my bike and shifted into first gear and started out on my test ride. When I got to the stop sign and put my left foot down I noticed that the knee pad on my right leg was not at my knee but higher. I like the paints but will send them back and request a better size (fit). Safety is my goal. André Eason NC-X Educator Page 13 of 30

From Your Motorist Awareness Coordinator Brad Bradford The March 2017 edition of Wing World magazine has a great article on Motorist Awareness written by Barri Critzman. In the article he suggests the many different locations where Motorist Awareness seminars could be held including rest stops on the highway. He suggests ride your bike or trike, weather permitting. Set up a table and pass out water or a hot cup of coffee. Share a warm friendly smile and a Motorist Awareness trifold. Bring the motorcycle drill team along! He also suggests contacting the local mall and talking to them about a community safety display. Set up a table and serve a large helping of Motorist Awareness. Until next month, Safe Riding! 15 Page 15 of 30 The X Files March 2017 From Your Ride Coordinator As the riding season heats up (both literally and figuratively), NC-X prepares for an enjoyably buy season. In addition to rides to various other chapter gatherings, during the month of February, we attended a Super Bowl party at John and Lena s, attended a Valentine s Day luncheon organized by Joy Kennedy, and attended the C2 Chili Cook-off. We certainly had a lot of fun at each of these events and there s more of the same planned for March. There s a garage meet at Sanford S2 on March 4 and a Swap meet at H2 on March 18. Of course there are also the impromptu rides that anyone can organize and/or suggest. I encourage each of you to suggest rides that are special to you and let us share it with you. One ride that I ve spoken about in previous articles is dubbed as a history ride. I ve finalized the particulars of that ride and the particulars have been sent to all NC-X members as well as other chapters within our district. That ride is to Gettysburg Pennsylvania beginning on May 19 and ending on May 21. It includes a tour of the Gettysburg visitor s center for a presentation of the battle pictorially represented with sound effects then a guided motorcycle tour of the battlegrounds. From there we ll proceed to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where we will spend two nights at the Days Inn in Lancaster. If you re planning to go and stay with the rest of us, you ll get the best rates by going out to the GWRRA web site to book your reservations. On the second day, we have a variety of events that each person can choose from including a trip to the sight of the 9/11 flight crash, a covered bridge ride through the local area, and a tour of Valley Forge. And there will certainly be time to visit Amish farms and/or take a buggy ride as well as a short ride to one of the most delicious ice cream locations on the east coast. That would be The Jigger Shop in Mt. Gretna, PA. It s a beautiful country ride of approximately 18 miles and definitely worth the ride both for the ride itself as well as the delicious ice cream treats. The following day is the return and we ll take the eastern route through Delaware, through to the eastern short of Maryland and into Virginia, across the Chesapeake Bay tunnel and back home. If you d like to get some historical perspective. Here is a link to Gettysburg: com/# You can learn more about Valley Forge here:

If you have questions, please call ((301) ) or me I also mentioned that Rolling Thunder is Memorial Day weekend and for those interested, the annual Rolling Thunder ride to Washington, DC occurs. Anyone interested in making this ride, please let me know. One word of caution though, hotel accommodations for this event tend to fill up quickly so if you want to attend, you really need to make your accommodations new. There are many related events occurring on that weekend including the United States Air Force air show at Andrews Air Force base, a memorial ride to Ground Zero in New York, and a tribute to fallen law enforcement officers. Of course there are also all the usual sights in DC such as the Smithsonian museum (including Air and Space, Natural History, American History, Viet Nam War memorial, World War II memorial, Korean War memorial, Lincoln memorial, Jefferson memorial, Martin Luther King memorial, Theodore Roosevelt memorial, the National Capital visitor center, the White House, and the newest monument of the African American museum, among others). The weekend of June 16 thru 18, we re planning a Maryland Crab ride. A small contingent of us will ride to Maryland to purchase a couple of bushels of blue crabs then bring them back to North Carolina and have a feeding frenzy at a place to be determined. Please let us know if you d like to participate. There will be plenty of crabs, shrimp, and other types of seafood and drinks. Those are but a few of the planned activities for the new riding season but there are lots more on the calendar. Please check it out and plan on attending some or all of them or suggest some of your own. Until next month, Safe Riding!
