Chapter Director s Two Cents Walter & Bernadette Snider NEWS... Hello fellow wingers, hope you are all doing well! Time seems to be flying by lately. I feel like it was just yesterday that I was writing an article. My work has been keeping me very busy the past few weeks. I just finished a 13 day stretch without a day off. But that s OK, I like what I do and do not mind the longer hours that occur from time to time. Some of you probably already know this but we have new Assistant District Directors (ADDs) for the East. Bobby and Susan Womack have worked very hard for four years now and are stepping down. I personally want to thank Bobby and Susan for all they have done. Our new ADDs are Austin and Peggy Gauthier. Thank you for taking the reins, I wish you the best in performing your role. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and many of you may be traveling to be with family and friends. No matter your transportation method, please be safe and I hope you enjoy your holiday where ever you are. As I usually mention this time of year, please be careful if you are riding your motorcycle as fall is here and the tree leaves are falling. Wet leaves can take you down very quickly so avoid or be very careful in areas where leaves have accumulated. I forgot to mention this last month and wish to make amends. F2 s Couple Of the Year (COY) George & Brenda Harper were selected as District COY at Wings Over the Smokies this year. They deserve it. George & Brenda have done so much since joining our chapter and I know they will be an EXCEL- LENT addition to the District Staff. Please congratulate them next time you see them. Please make sure to schedule your time for O Berry and the Chapter Christmas Party on Saturday, December 3rd. We always have fun at both events and I am sure this year will be just as enjoyable. Ride Often and Ride Safe! Walter & Bernadette Snider NC-F2 Chapter Directors November 6th 2

The MEC Times Davis & Barbara Bowen Barbara and I were happy to be back at our regularly scheduled Chapter meeting in October. We missed the September meeting and realized how much we miss seeing you when WE RE not there and when YOU'RE not there! Therefore, don't miss our Chapter meetings unless you absolutely have to!!! I'm not quite ready to get back on the bike, shoulder-wise, but it doesn't mean I don't think about it. Barbara reminds me that going to therapy and doing my therapy exercises is what I need to do in order to get back out there on the Gold Wing. The weather is staying warm and sometimes I go out and crank it up, close my eyes, and imagine the wind on my face! Just a reminder, and I'm sure you've already thought about it, but cold weather will be here soon. Now's the time to begin to get your bike and your gear ready for cold weather riding. Do me a favor... while the weather is still good, go take a ride for me! Happy Trails! Davis & Barbara Bowen MECs/Goodies **** LET S GO FOR A RIDE **** Visit our web site (SOUTHERNWINGS.HOMESTEAD.COM) and see our new ride announcement page. If you plan on taking a ride and would like company, fill out the page and let the chapter know where you are going and that you would like some company. Try it soon! To be added or deleted to the ride announcement list, notify our webmaster Terry Wade at tkwade1@frontier.com 3

Rider Education David Knight & Kathy Keegan With cool weather here and colder weather approaching, it is time again to make sure our winter gear is up to speed. Chaps, coats, gloves, electric gear if you have it. All need to be checked long before time to use it. And make sure the bike is ready for cold weather. Check the tires (nuff said), and make sure the coolant in the radiator is at the proper level. If you're too cold while riding, you're not at your best. Being too cold takes a lot of the fun out of the ride. Since a good portion of us ride all winter, but maybe not quite as often, our trusty steed should be looked over a little more often. For anyone who is wondering about your Rider Ed levels, you can check your own status by going on to the national website and finding the Rider Education tab or you can contact me and I will check things out for you. Again, I am looking for my replacement as I will be stepping down as Chapter Educator after the first of the year. Anyone interested, please contact me. Enjoy the Ride and Be Safe! 5 The Couple s Corner Hi all, George & Brenda Harper It only seemed like yesterday that we became Chapter Couples and now it s almost been a year. Boy, time flies when you re having fun. George and I have visited all the chapters in North Carolina this year with the help of Charles and Sue Langley who we have really grown close to. We really had a good time while getting to know the chapters. I finally had my chance to ride some mountain roads and really found them to be really fun. I had my GL 1800 for a little over a year now and I've put over 27 thousand miles on it. I guess you could say that I haven't done much riding this year...lol. George has put over 26 thousand on his GL We weren't planning on competing for District Couple of the Year, however; I talked George into doing it. He wasn't all that excited about the idea but all you ladies know that we have the power in us to change men s minds LOL. We really had a great time competing for District Couple and I would really encourage all the Chapter Couples to compete at least once. However; our lives have changed a little since my mom moved in with us. She needs constant care so now we will have to adjust our visitation to other chapters for a while. We LOVE all the Chapter Couples and hope to talk and visit each and every one soon. Ride safe and have fun!! George & Brenda Harper F2 s Chapter Couple District Chapter Couple

District News Roy & Cindy Bryant NC District Directors September has come and gone but I will not forget September It was my first Wings Over The Smokies as District Director and I had so much to learn. I did learn that I have the BEST District Team that could ever be formed. This group of guys and gals were my life line. Without the help from the Team, I sure would have been lost in many ways. Every time we encountered a problem, the team put their heads together and came up with the solution. As with several things from the past, the phrase, We Can Do It, came to life and WOTS 2016 took on a different atmosphere. As the team watched the tents being raised all thoughts were, we are running out of prep time. This team jumped in together and helped raise those tents. As soon as the areas became available, the entire team worked together to measure and mark vendor space. By the end of the day Wednesday, everything was in place and WOTS was anxiously awaiting our members and participants. Yes, it was different and sometimes different is good. This was one example of that. As I visited and talked to many members at the rally, I could hear the excitement in their voices and gleam in their eyes. As they sat and chatted with friends, they watched the area for other friends who may be just arriving. The openness of the tents allowed the openness of the fellowship with friends and family. As I was walking from the outside vendor area on Saturday I looked up at the parking lot. What did I see? I saw the best reward any District Director could ever see. I saw a parking lot full of Gold Wings with the sun reflecting off shining windshields and chrome, my reward!! We enjoyed every aspect of our rally this year; from the beautifully lit bikes in the parade on Thursday night to the bike giveaway on Saturday. The talent show gave us so much entertainment it was hard to sleep Friday night. The Drill Teams showed us how practiced maneuvers make for skilled enjoyment. There were challenges this year but the Team did overcome them. Next year we are moving to Waynesville to the Haywood County Fairgrounds. As we visited this new venue, we think again of the past and find it is just like a previous one where great memories were made. We will still have challenges but not like we have overcome this year. Make your plans now and mark your calendars for September 28-30, In closing, Thank You to the NC Members and Workers, along with the District Team. You made the rally a success. MEMBERS ARE NUMBER ONE!!!! Roy & Cindy Bryant NC District Directors 8

Region N News Glenda & Alan Keough Region N Directors REGION DIRECTOR THOUGHTS What a difference a day makes...literally! We started home Sunday from Wings Over the Smokies in North Carolina riding in temps in the mid 90 s. Being the fair weather rider that I have become, we stopped for the day early that afternoon. Monday morning when we started out again the temps were in the 50 s. Oh, how I love fall. I d take this season all year long. Speaking about WOTS, what a super rally North Carolina had again this year. After being told late in the day that the Aquoni Center wasn t available this year, Roy & Cindy and their awesome team pulled together and took us back to the days when a rally under a tent wasn t anything unusual. They had everything vendors, games, prizes...they had it all. I even tried my hand at Jenga for the first time, and even though, I was the one to knock the stack over, I was pretty proud of how well I did. I can t stress how proud I am of the North Carolina District. We were also able to attend Wing Ding in Billings the first of September. Although it was unusually hot for that time of the year, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We got to meet lots of new folks (one advantage of working at onsite registration) and catch up with old friends that we hadn t seen since Wing Ding last year. These things remind me how much I love this organization and the family that it has brought into my life. You truly do meet the nicest folks on a Gold Wing. Region N made a super showing at Wing Ding. We brought home lots of awards, not the least of which was Educator of the Year presented to our own Kyle Craig. WooHoo!!! Way to go Kyle...we are so proud of you! Our travels in October take us to Rally in the Valley in Virginia. This brings to an end the dis- trict rallies for Region N for the year. I hate to see the season end, but can think of no better place to hold that event. We are looking forward to another successful rally with our Virginia friends. If you haven t already, be sure and check out our new Facebook page. You can find us under Appalachian Region N. Join the group and keep up with what s going on in Region N. Feel free to post news about your district and chapter happenings there so that we can all keep up with what s taking place in the Region. This is your group, so be sure to participate in informing us all about what is happening in your chapter/district. If you haven t registered for the Appalachian Fall Finale in November, take a minute to go out to the region website and download the registration form, fill it out, and send it in. Be sure to come support your district couple. They are looking to you for encouragement, so don t let them down. You also don t want to miss what Rosalie & Willie Boyles have in store for you. Those of you who were at the West Virginia Rally know what I m talking about. Those of you who haven t seen the production will be glad you get to see it. Lots of song and dance and more! How long has it been since you actually belly laughed? Don t miss this show. It s included in your registration fee, so make it a point to be there. Until next time, remember to ride safe, ride often, and above all else have FUN. Glenda & Alan Keough Region N Directors 9

National News Bob & Althea Berry GWRRA Rider Education Directors The Incredible Disappearing Motorcycle Trick By Barri Critzman I love my Mini Cooper. As a matter of fact, both Mike and I have Mini Coopers. Mike has a Clubman. My mini, however, is better and smaller. Much smaller. I have a two-seater Mini Roadster. It is black with brushed aluminum racing stripes. It has a six speed turbo with tachometers and temperature gauges and a custom exhaust. We call it the Gnatmobile, in homage to the much more famous (but much less fun) Batmobile. Why am I talking about my Mini? I was in the Gnatmobile and on my way home from a lunch with friends when I saw a small motorcycle and rider. Both the rider and the bike were small the bike a little 250 Honda. Now you have to imagine the road. This is a frontage road with two lanes on either side, and on my side is a fence separating the freeway from the road. I was going north and the freeway on my right is going south. I was in the number one lane with the Honda rider on my right. I saw him quite clearly as I stopped at a light. He was wearing every bit of gear he could find and in every color! This is why I saw him in the first place. When the light turned green I accelerated. I looked in my rear view mirror. Where was the motorcycle? I looked in the side mirror. Head checks. No motorcycle! I looked quickly around to make sure he wasn't passing me. No motorcycle. I was so concerned that I looked quickly to all three mirrors to make sure he wasn't down or on the shoulder of the road. Nope...he wasn't there either! I believe in a lot of things, but motorcycles and riders do not normally disappear into the eleventh dimension. I knew that rider was there and I was determined to find him. As I came to a stop to make a left hand turn, I saw him. He was tucked away in my Mini s blind spot, just to the right and behind my right quarter panel. Had I moved to the number two lane I would have knocked him down and the car behind him would have rolled over on him. The sports bike rider did virtually everything right. It took less than four seconds for all of the events described to occur. The only thing the rider did wrong was venture into my blind spot, but here s the thing the rider was moving and shifting gears, and so was I. My mini is not a big car with lots of blind spots. It's not an eighteen wheeler with blind spots that can hide tanks and small planes. My mini is a tiny little car with tiny blind spots, and it very capably hid a motorcycle and rider. The take-away is this: I ride, so I actively look for other riders. I have gone down, so I am always aware of riders near me. What if this had been a normal motorist driving a normal vehicle, who didn't see the rider, who didn't pay attention, who was not tracking the rider and who was not looking for something that was clearly not there? Talk to motorists. Tell people you ride. Believe in Motorist Awareness. It can save a life. Help us Survive the Ride Mike & Barri Critzman Directors - Motorist Awareness Division GWR- RA 10
