Do a 1 or 2 night trip in Deam Wilderness 15Feb Feb2014 Attending: John Little, Brett Henderson, Kyle Musick, Annie Hollibaugh, J.C. Armoto, John Gilliland, Rusty, Roger Ault Trip planned and led by Roger Ault Please keep in mind that the view of this trip report, like any other, are simply my views. Please feel free to add your own views, make corrections where I may have incorrect information such as direction of travel or anything else that you would like to add. Quick Summary: When it was all said and done it was a fantastic and epic Type 2 trip. Because we are such an astute bunch of people all of the obstacles were overcome and dealt with with a smile on our faces, great attitudes, and using the greatest tool that we have, the one between our ears. Roger Ault and Rusty actually went down the evening of the 14th. I think it snowed on them a few inches that night and the temp dropped to around 5. The rest of began trickling in the next day. I was the last to arrive. John G., Annie and J.C. met at Denny's in Bloomington for breakfast. Afterwards they headed for Hoosier National Forest, Deam Wilderness. Although I wasn't there for this part I think that this is where the epic trip actually started. At least part 1 of it. You see the gravel road into Deam was snow covered. Apparently John G. (I was told this) didn't have enough tread on his tires to conquer the snow covered road. In an effort to gain some traction he let some air out of his tires. Not a totally unheard of solution. I guess it didn't work very well. At any rate he made it to the Grubb Ridge parking lot. Somewhere in all of this Kyle towed him on occasion and I suppose took him, Annie and J.C. to the Hickory Ridge Fire Tower to begin the trek to camp. I arrived a couple of hours behind everyone else. As we shall see this was destined to be my state throughout the day. When I arrived at camp everyone else was setup and working on getting a fire going. I introduced myself to the folks I didn't know and chatted with Brett and Kyle for a few minutes before setting up.

Brett was talking about bushwhacking down to Middle Salt Fork Creek, which was frozen over. He would hike from there over to the ruins. Glancing at a map I estimated this to be about 2 miles. Even though I had only eaten a light lunch and had a few milliliters of Gatorade left I thought this would be short enough and I wouldn't run into a deficit on hydration or calories. This now is the beginning of part 2 of our epic trip. Well, actually it was the beginning for me more so than everyone else. Brett and everyone else except Kyle and John G., who weren't going, took off across frozen Terill Pond while I was finishing setting up. I was maybe 5 minutes behind them. As I reached the other side of the pond I caught a glimpse J.C. and Annie making their way down a very steep slope. Following their track I started down this same slope. I didn't get to see how the others made it down but for my part I slid down on my butt for about 10 feet in 2 sections. From what I could see there was nothing but smooth rock under the snow. Getting to the bottom I had lost sight of them but still following their track in the snow I soon caught a glimpse of them. They were about 100 yards ahead of me. As they stopped to examine the map and GPS at the edge of the frozen creek I caught up with them. If you look at the photos of this trip you will see one by J.C. with the caption "Three guys looking at one GPS unit trying figure out which way to go." This was the foreshadowing of things to come. We are now truly at the beginning of part 2 for everyone. If you look on the DNR map you will see a campsite at Terill Ridge. Directly north of this campsite you will see a peninsula with a campsite on either side of it. I believe our intended entry to the creek was at the campsite on the east. We wound up, unknowingly, on the west side of the peninsula. As we walked out to the middle of the frozen creek we took a bearing to the right. After walking down the middle of the creek for maybe ¾ of a mile Roger checks his GPS and mentions that we are headed in the wrong direction. After some map checking and discussion we decide that Roger is correct so we turn around. Brett, Roger, J.C or Annie if I have this incorrect please correct. I believe that Roger has the trip logged on his GPS. Now we begin what is now our 5 mile or so trek down the middle of the frozen creek. This was quite unique walking in the middle of the creek during winter. We saw the wilderness from a perspective that we never would have seen otherwise.

We had a few jumpy moments where we would hear the ice crack and headed to the bank pretty quickly. I don t think we took any pictures of it but you could see that the ice was about 6 inches thick where it had lifted up near the bank. For the most part though we stayed on the iced over creek. Brett in his usual fashion is way in front of everyone. I ve studied his walk and thinking I m matching it I still don t stay with him. Someday I ll figure out how he does that. But I digress. About 1 ½ miles or so from the ruins the rest of the group stops for a rest break. I continue on following Brett. At this point I feel my left thigh starting to ache probably from lack of hydration. My bad. About a mile or so from the ruins Brett stops and I catch up with him in a few minutes. We stand around chatting while the other finish up their rest break and meet up with us. Finally we make it around the last point, head up to the bank and shortly we are at the ruins. Here we all take a much needed break. At this point I am starting to feel my energy run down because of the calorie deficit. We are about 2 miles from camp. Again my bad. It is also starting to get dark. J.C. and Brett are the only people with head lamps. We start heading to the top of ridge with the intent of walking this back to camp. This was a struggle for me with my leg hurting like it was and running a substantial calorie deficit. Somewhere along here Roger mentions eating snow to stay hydrated. This I began doing. J.C. also gave me some ibuprofen, electrolyte tabs and I drank a little of his water. J.C. hung back with me though and stuck with me until we made it back to camp. I think we were about 5 minutes behind the others. As I sat down I knew I had screwed up big time and was working on a plan to get myself out of my self inflicted predicament. Many thanks to J.C. for his extra effort and meds. I ll tease him about his over indulged first aid kit again! : ) As I sat there I began to grow cold from lack of movement and decide to wrap up in my sleeping bag under my tarp. Since I use an alcohol stove I have no real concerns about cooking under my tarp. I just make sure the stove is under the highest point and that there is ventilation. I wouldn t try this with a canister stove though.

Knowing that I needed to drink the liter of water that I left behind I start melting snow. This is going way to slow for me as I need to eat and quickly. While I m doing this I am eating cheese cubes and Wheat Thins. Finally I decide to use some of the water to finish boiling what I need for my freezer bag meal. I have some dehydrated taco meat with beans and some dehydrated mixed vegetables that I dump in the taco meat. I over fill it some wanting to make it more like a soup than taco meat. This worked out really well and helped warm me up. Starting to feel better I drifted off to sleep. As I was going to sleep I listened to the talk, banter and laughter of the others around the campfire. For whatever reason this made me feel much better as well. When I woke up Sunday morning I did a self assessment and decided that while I hadn t totally overcome my deficits I was in much better shape. My leg was still hurting though and this bothered me. I went ahead and packed up. I think Roger, John G. and J.C were starting to stir about by the time I finished packing. I said my goodbyes to everyone and started off. I had some dehydrated deli ham and sweet potatoes along with some Clif Shot Blocks that I ate on the way out. Along the way I would find some clean deep snow and eat handfuls of that. By the time I was home I was walking with a noticeable limp. I began drinking water and eating fruit. As I write this on Monday I still have some soreness but it is starting to subside. All in all this was a great trip and fantastic adventure my own mishaps aside. I am quite impressed with the beginners and people just starting out again on their backpacking journey. Everyone always kept a good attitude and a smile on no matter what came our way. I know I learned, as I always do, from my mistakes on this trip. I know I was not as physically prepared for this trip having been sick the whole month of January and losing pounds in the process. I m sure much of my muscle mass went away with that weight loss. Even though I had been working out to rebuild the muscle it wasn t enough. I need to start remembering too that I m not 30 or 40 something either and can t go as far without nutrition and hydration as I once could.

Many thanks to all who went on this trip. Everyone made it the huge success that it was!
