From Your Chapter Directors Contemplating what to write about this month I came up with several topics that were not chosen. My first thought was to write about taking precaution when riding in the extreme heat but concluded you already know it is hot outside and when riding, stay hydrated. You already know to perform a TCLOC before each ride and have your bikes serviced for the condition. My second thought was to write about wearing proper riding gear especially when the temperature is above 90 degrees but you already know that mesh tech gear allows air flow, DOT approved helmets protects the head, over the ankle boots protects the foot area, leather gloves protects the hands and from GWRRA training; Wear All The Gear, All The Time (ATGATT). The third subjects was about WOtS but thought to myself, you have already registered or plan to do so before early registration ends, secured hotel accommodations and volunteered to work 4 hours with the Chapter. Fourth I thought about X-toberfest but then realized you are already promoting the Chapter Rally to riding buddies and are committed to donating at least one door prize and working at the rally. I thought about writing about the fun things the Chapter did last month (chapter visitations, breakfast, ice cream and the district ice cream rides, pool party, Rolesville July 4 th Parade with a Motorist Awareness booth) but thought they will be highlighted by others in their articles. So, as you can see I had a difficult time coming up with something to write about. Here is something new that I can write about. Brad is a certified MSF instructor and has volunteered to setup practice sessions with Chapter members that want to improve their riding skills. This is proving to be invaluable while improving skills in cornering, slow riding, swerving, clutch/throttle control and the list goes on. I must note that these are not GWRRA sponsored practice sessions. Several of us are leaving for Wing Ding (GWRRA biggest party) in Billings, MT this month. Most of us would have logged over 4500 miles by the time we return. For those who have never attended Wing Ding think of it as where over 10,000 of your friends meet for a big party, with several hundred vendors & Exhibitors, Entertainment, Manufacturers demo rides, seminars, grand parade just to name a few. It is well worth attending at least once. We have several Chapter rides and activities planned this the month? As your Chapter Directors, Lena and I would love to have you participate and be part of the fun. Page 3 of 29 John & Lena

From Your Assistant Chapter Directors When visiting other Chapter Gatherings and meeting new people, I sometimes ask them what their all-time favorite motorcycle ride was, and why it was their favorite? It is interesting to see and hear them tell about that favorite ride. They kind of light up as they recall the ride. My favorite ride(s) so far have been attending Wings Over the Smokies. We attended in 2014, 2015, and are planning on attending The group rides there and back are always Fun, but it is the riding once you get to Cherokee that is the best. I love the Smoky National Park. We spent a lot of our summers camping in the area while our kids were growing up. Now, riding the mountain roads on a motorcycle is fantastic. During the 2014 WOtS, we took a Chapter ride to Townsend and Cades Cove, TN. Traffic can be a bit heavy, especially at Cades Cove, but it is a great ride. If you plan ahead, Cades Cove is a nice place to have a picnic, and there is a camp store at the end of Cades Cove 11-miles 1-way loop that has some great soft serve ice cream. Cades Cove also has plenty of wild life. Over the years, we have seen deer, bears, wolves, wild turkeys, elk and more. Another great ride while at WOtS is to hop on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway starts in Cherokee next to the entrance of the Great Smoky National Park. Hop on and ride as far as you can during the time you have available. There are some great places to stop along the way to enjoy the scenery and to take pictures. Riding from Cherokee to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge is another potential ride. Going to visit the Tourist traps of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge is a great way to spend an afternoon. There are also some good places to go for lunch while there. One thing we really like to do is to go white water rafting, though the white water rafting businesses may be closed for the season by the time WOtS rolls around. I am at least going to look for a place that is still open. There are so many great places to ride, and it is not that far away from Wake Forest. Cherokee is about 300 miles. That is just enough to get the engine warmed up! How about riding to WOtS with NC-X this year and enjoying the beauty of the mountains while riding your trusty bike? Roger & Sue Page 4 of 29

Wing Ding 38 Wing Ding is just around the corner and you should have planned most of your trip by now. One of the things to worry about is the right clothing. Before leaving out of the south, check the weather forecast throughout your entire riding route and pack accordingly. Regardless of the forecast reports, I recommend you still pack some cold weather gear. The end of August weather can be tricky in the mountains. Pay attention to tire pressure because it will change. Make sure you stay hydrated and get plenty of rest. Ride Safe, adjust your route and riding as deemed necessary according to the weather and environment, have a great time, lots of FUN and we ll see you all when you return! André Eason NC-X Educator Motorcycle Humor. How did we get to this? A driver was stuck in traffic on a highway just outside Washington D.C. Nothing was moving. Suddenly, a man knocks on the driver s window. The driver rolls down his window and asks, What s going on? Terrorists have kidnapped the entire U.S. Congress and are holding them hostage. They are demanding a $100 Million ransom or they say they will douse them in gasoline and set them on fire. We are going around car to car collecting donations. How much are others giving, on average? asks the driver? Roughly a gallon the man replies. Roger Turner Page 5 of 29

Dog Days of Summer An Interesting Fact The dog days, I always thought, were those summer days so devastatingly hot that even dogs would lie around on the asphalt, panting. Many people today use the phrase to mean something like that but originally, the phrase actually had nothing to do with dogs, or even with the lazy days of summer. Instead, it turns out; the dog days refer to the dog star, Sirius, and its position in the heavens. We have certainly experienced some extreme hot weather days the past few weeks; too hot for motorcycle riding. Many of us took to the road in our air conditioned cages. Xavier had quite an experience also. Read all about our adventures in this newsletter. Enjoy! ******************************************************************************** Imbedded in the August issue is ĜŴŘŘĂ. Read and Find me. Have FUN Reading and don t forget to me at editor@wakeforestwings.org with the exact location of the imbedded picture, phrase or object for a chance to win a door prize. Special Invite To All.. Come and join in with us at our August gathering for a chance at the Marble Drawing. There is currently $429 in the pot. Chinese Auction: Bring your $1 bills. All proceeds are donated to the O Berry Center Gifts On Cycle. Auction item TBD but it will be nice! The Chapter Newsletter is another way to Participate. Write about your experiences and submit an article. Remember, the key is to PARTICIPATE. Participation = FUN. Page 6 of 29 Lena Bryant Newsletter Editor

From Your Motorist Awareness Coordinator Brad Bradford July came in like a lamb with lots of rain and very moderate temperatures, considering how July in North Carolina is typically. We participated in the town of Rolesville s July 4 th parade. As part of that participation, we asked for and were granted permission to have a booth promoting Motorist Awareness. Thanks to John Bryant for assisting me in holding this event. It was a beautiful day and we had lots of people come by the booth to talk about motorist awareness and motorcycles in particular. The event was well received although the greatest thrill for me was interacting with the kids and seeing their excitement about sitting on the bikes. Many people wanted to know what they could do to further the cooperation between motorcyclists and other road users. We explained that one way of gaining that perspective is to take a motorcycle safety course. By doing so, even if the individual never rides a motorcycle again, their perspective on their and others position on the road, would be greatly enhanced. We handed out lots of pamphlets some of which were directly related to motorcyclists and their responsibility on the road while other pamphlets were of particular interest to other highway users. We hope to have continuing events such as this and, in fact, have been in touch with a couple of local schools to gauge interest in having us present at some of their functions to raise teen awareness. I ll keep you posted as these discussions continue. Until next month, Safe Riding! Brad Page 7 of 29

From Your Chapter Couple of the Year ride this summer. In my ACD article this month, I wrote about my favorite motorcycle ride so far. In this COY article, I want to write about my Dream ride. This is the ride I want to take. I am planning to do some of this My dream ride is to ride out west and visit as many National Parks as possible. I have not spent the time planning this trip yet, so I am not sure what order to hit the parks. However, these are some of the parks I would like to visit on this Dream trip. The Rocky Mountain National Park near Denver is one of the parks. We visited this park about 15 years ago as a family. However, that was riding in a car. This would be on the bike. Next would be the Grand Canyon. We visited here several years ago, again in a car. The Sedona area south of the Flagstaff would also be on this list. Next would be stopping by the Hoover Dam and several parks around Las Vegas. Next, would be heading to California and heading up the coast towards Seattle. While in California, I would have to ride through the Sequoia National Park and Yosemite National Park. I am sure there will be several places along the Pacific coast to visit too (Mt Saint Helens, Mt Rainer, others?) On the way heading back east, I would want to stop by Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore. I would also plan on passing through St Louis and visiting the St Louis Arch. As I mentioned at the start of this article, I am planning to take part of this trip this summer. I (and Sue if her arm/elbow heals enough) am planning on going to Wing Ding in Billings. At the very least, Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore and St Louis would be included in that trip. What about you? Do you have a Dream ride that you want to take? Are you in process of planning that dream ride? If so, I would love to talk to you about it. Roger & Sue Page 8 of 29

From Your Ride Coordinator Brad Bradford NC-X visited several chapters in July but because of a multitude of factors, didn t take as many rides otherwise. However; the month started out with our participation in the Rolesville July 4 th parade. In addition to participating in the parade, NC-X had a tent promoting Motorist Awareness. John Bryant manning Booth Of course, what would an NC-X event be without the assistance of Xavier? Rolesville s Mayor, Frank Eagles, also got into the spirit! John found his new best friend. Miss Teen North Carolina We were visited by Royalty Miss Junior North Carolina Of course several chapter members rode in the parade as well as members from other chapters. Then, there were the many, many visitors from the community that showed great interest in the motorcycles for sure. Page 9 of 29

We also enjoyed one very special event that has become an annual favorite. Rick and Barbie Yost hosted their second annual pool party. This was a very special treat where lots of chapter members came and had an opportunity to let it all hang out! Everyone attending brought something to share and Rick insisted that everyone had to take a dip in the pool. Rick and Barbie have a beautiful home surrounded by large, beautiful trees, extraordinary landscaping, and some of the most beautiful flying neighbors you ve ever seen! Of course Xavier just can t stay out of trouble. Look at these! Just scandalous, I tell you! There was plenty of competition! And I don t want to start any scandalous rumors but, could this be why John and Lena were separated? I mean really, do you see how intensely she and Xavier is interacting? And they never even noticed the camera. Then there s Glenn exercising himself to complete exhaustion! While Joy can t understand why there s no trash at this event! What s up with that? She wonders! Friday, July 22 nd, we had an ice cream ride to Lumpy s Ice Cream shop in Wake Forest. We got to see Debra Lawler s new and beautiful toy, a Can AM Spyder! We had an excellent turnout for the ride and the ice cream was cold!! We had a ride planned to Yanceyville on Saturday, July 23 rd but with heat indices expected to top 105 degrees, we thought better of it. Yanceyville has a 6.9 mile stretch of twisties that some like to call the mini-dragon. As weather moderate, we will put this ride back on the calendar. Page 10 of 29

Next month, several NC-X members will be heading out west for Wing Ding in Billings, Montana. Others will be participating in other ride events. I d love to hear from you all about your rides and would also be very interested in places you d like to ride. Until next month, Safe Riding! Brad Ride Coordinator Motorcycle Humor. Stranded On An Island A man is stranded on a desert island, all alone for ten years. One day, he sees a speck in the horizon. He thinks to himself, "It's not a ship." The speck gets a little closer and he thinks, "It's not a boat." The speck gets even closer and he thinks, "It's not a raft." Then, out of the surf comes this gorgeous blonde woman, wearing a wet suit and scuba gear. She comes up to the guy and she says, "How long has it been since you've had a cigarette?" "Ten years!" he says. She reaches over, unzips a waterproof pocket on her left sleeve and pulls out a pack of fresh cigarettes. He takes one, lights it, takes a long drag and says, "Man, oh man! Is that good!" Then she asks, "How long has it been since you've had a drink of whiskey?" He replies, "Ten years!" She reaches over, unzips her waterproof pocket on the right, pulls out a flask and gives it to him. He takes a long swig and says, "Wow, that's fantastic!" Then she starts unzipping this long zipper that runs down the front of her wet suit and she says to him, "And how long has it been since you've had some REAL fun?" And the man replies, "My God! Don't tell me you've got a ĜŴŘŘĂ motorcycle in there!" Page 11 of 29

Mascot - Xavier s Travels Xavier has been having the time of his life since Rick found and had him returned home to the Wake Forest Wings in March. As a brief reminder, Rick found the bum (Xavier) partying his butt off in New York City. He began a life of partying ecstasy and had been doing so for the past 2 ½ years! He was burned out and had been seeking refuge. Xavier was found "sleeping one off" behind a trash can in Grand Central Station. The founder got him home and sobered him up, he said the last thing he remembered was climbing on board a north-bound train from Raleigh with some hot gal who showed him a bottle of Jack Daniels and said if he drank "some" he'd be able to sleep on the train. Well this began his first time with ingesting "spirits"; he didn't know when to stop and ended up drinking himself into a blind stupor. Now that Rick had found and rescued him from a life of partying every day, Xavier said he need a break and couldn t wait to rejoin his previous life with NC-X, kick back, relax and finally get some sleep! Rick thought he would have a heart-to-heart talk with Xavier. (Excerpts: Xavier Found By Rick Yost, The X File, March 2016 Issue). He introduced Xavier to the chapter and there was instant love for him. Debra made sure he was properly fitted with the required GWRRA pins, patches and most importantly, received his membership card. James and Debra took care of him his first month back. Glenn and Joy and Roger and Sue cared for him the next two months respectively and we have had him for the last month. To date, Xavier has attended many chapter gatherings, gone on several over-night trips, progressive dinner ride, a pool party, breakfast, dinner, ice-cream and impromptu rides. He even sat in on some of our strategy sessions. Trust me, he has been rolling and enjoying every minute of it to date. Hold Up, Hold Up! Xavier hasn t always been on his best behavior since his return. He found himself slipping back into his old habits. Example 1: On the chapter s overnighter to SC, we stopped at a Stuckey s/dairy Queen for gas and a short rest. Somehow Xavier escaped from Glenn s Goldwing and upon spying an outdoor display rack of sandals, decided that he wanted to go shoe shopping. He found a pair of sandals that he really Page 13 of 29

wanted and he thought that he had made out like a bandit but then the Summerton police force drove up and caught him in the act. The officer hit his blue lights and had Xavier assume the position on the back of his patrol car. The officer decided that since his handcuffs were too large to properly restrain Xavier that he would release him to the custody of NC-X pending his arraignment on a date yet to be determined. (Excerpts: Xavier s Trip to The Holy City Joy & Glenn Kennedy, The X File, June 2016 Issue). Example 2: Xavier found himself behind bars during the overnighter to Mt. Airy. There is no telling what he did to land himself in this predicament (behind bars). Just when we thought things couldn t get any worse, Xavier misbehaved big time at the pool party. Not once but twice. When they arrived, they met a church group of children and had a blast with them. Just when everyone thought Xavier was serious about putting and keeping his bad behavior behind him, guess what? He somehow found his way in the trunk of Rick s (Yost) bike and went home with him. He tried to atone for his errors. We took him with us for our week-day breakfast. After breakfast, the guys went on a ride to Medoc Park. We can t totally blame Xavier for not returning home. John (Bryant) was his keeper for the day, so in all fairness, John bears part of the blame. John I can handle but I need your help with figuring out an appropriate punishment for Xavier. me your suggestions to Editor@WakeForestWings.org. Lena Bryant Page 14 of 29

Northeast Adventure in Maine Tent Camping in Acadia National Park For most of us our age, tent camping is a faint memory of our youthful past. Most have evolved to more civilized ways of interacting with Mother Nature camping trailers, RV s or luxurious motor homes. However, some of us never grow up and still believe that you are only as old as you allow yourself to be. Although our children are now out on their own, married and scattered all the way across this country, we decided that a camping vacation was a great way to bring the family back together in an old familiar way. So seven of us; three children, two spouses along with the two of us that started this family spent six days and five nights tent camping in Acadia National Park on the eastern seashore of Maine. Our two campsites were side-by-side primitive walk-in sites. That means no driving up the campsite to offload your camping equipment, no electricity on site and no running water on site. There were clean restroom facilities in the campground BUT NO SHOWERS. Six days and five nights with NO SHOWERS. Good thing we were all family? hiking, exploration of tidal gazing, and swimming the cold ocean) highlighted the park. Acadia National Park is gorgeous in its natural beauty. The shoreline punctuated by innumerable fingers of land protruding into the ocean creates natural harbors around every turn. Filled by boats of every size and purpose, each harbor creates a postcard picture exactly as you would expect small fishing villages to look like. Acadia is full of opportunities for adventure of every kind and the younger members of our family (including my young-at-heart wife Joy) are adventure hounds. Rock climbing, cliff climbing, kayaking, paddle boarding, mountain biking, pools, star (lakes not our time at Although we cooked most of our meals at the campsite either on the camp stove or over the campfire coals (remember Hobo meals?), we did find time to go into Bar Harbor, Maine to eat whole lobsters on a veranda overlooking the harbor. Page 15 of 29

It was Joy s and my first time in Maine and it created beautiful memories for our family. The weather was fabulous with the temperatures in the 70 s every day. The only thing that could have made it better would have been if we had been on our Goldwing, but we could not figure out how to get four mountain bikes, two kayaks, four tents, food, suitcases and other camping supplies into our motorcycle trailer. Maybe next time! Glenn & Joy Funny, Sad, Strange, Eventful but Fun July 4 th Weekend You ask how anyone can get all of this in a three day holiday week end. Just ask John and myself. First, l ll back up a few days. FUNNY We were ending up a week as caregivers for my sister when on Saturday, John comes running in the house with a hoe in his hand saying I almost stepped on this long big black snake and he crawled up under the car. As my sister-in-law and I stood behind the storm door, John goes back outside and cautiously opens the hood of the car, stood back looking with no site of the snake. John insisted the snake had to be under the hood somewhere. They get the bright idea of cranking the car. My brother goes out the back door around to the front to take John the car keys. As John again cautiously open the car door, my brother (limping on his walking cane) stand back in a running position. After letting the engine run for about ten minutes and no sign of the snake, John then get the bright idea of taking his pressure washer and power spraying under the hood. Still no snake siting and the guys conclude that maybe it came out when John ran in the house, hoe in hand. My sister-in-law and I cautiously looked out the front storm door to see if it had come out, in or went across the yard into the field somewhere. No such luck, so the hunt ended. Uncomfortable with not finding the snake, I paced back and forth to the door about every couple of minutes or so looking around the car/carport. Low and behold after about ten minutes, what do I see? It s, the snake, I shouted!!!!! Long story short, my brother laid down his cane, reached way out with the hoe, chopped off the snake s tail as John stretched out and chopped off the head. They gathered up the snake with all his parts, walked to a large ditch, and dumped the evidence. They cleaned up the mess they made on the flooring and put up their weapons. My sister asked, John are you sure he s dead? I don t want to see him crawling back when I am out there in my wheel chair. John responded, for sure, that one is not coming back but I can t speak for any of its Page 16 of 29

family members. The entire family is still laughing at this one. SAD Word was received that a classmate of mine and a close childhood friend of John had passed on Monday, the 27 th. We looked at the funeral home announcement and saw that the funeral was scheduled for Saturday, 11:00 AM. With the next Saturday being July 2 nd, we got up and drove down for the service. STRANGE We arrived for the funeral only to find only a couple of cars in the parking lot. Thinking that was strange, we went inside, saw a minister we knew and inquired about the scheduled service. He responded that he didn t know the deceased or anything about his service. Ok, John proceeded towards the front to view the body as I hung back. In my mind I was saying, That s not our friend. John get about half way up, turn around and say to me that s not our friend, what s going on? I replied you had to go that far to see that; I recognized it wasn t him from the back. We raced to the mortician s office. He said no, his funeral is scheduled for Saturday, July 9 th at 11:00 AM. Wondering how we could make such a mistake, we returned to the car. In our defense, the original announcement had said Saturday, 11:00 AM. We never bothered to take another look to reconfirm the date but worse than that, at least five of my siblings knew we were coming home especially for the service and they didn t correct us. They all thought it was funny and so did we in the end. EVENTFUL No funeral; now what do we do with our time? We decided to visit our friend s Mom. She was excited to see us. At age 82, her mind was as sharp as ever and she enjoyed reminiscing with John about him and her boys growing up together. We also stopped by to spend a little time with another very dear friend of ours. Of course, they got a big laugh out of this as well. It s about 2:30 PM, what now? John s mom s side of the family was having a family reunion starting at 1:00. We arrived about 3:00, joining about eighty or more family members and friends. We thought dinner would be over or at least started by that time Wrong. John finally takes a hot dog off the grill for us to share. After about 6:30, he decides to get up and help out. In the process, he grabs a piece of fish hot out of the deep fryer and shares that with me. A long story short, eating started about 7:30 or 8:00. EVENTFUL Part 2 It s now the next day, Sunday. My dad s side of the family was having a family reunion at 2:00 PM. We were told by my siblings that it was being held at the community center building on HWY 44 on the left, not at the Indigo on the right. Familiar with the location, John and I lead out with my siblings following. We arrived at the community center; turn left and everyone else turn right (The Indigo). We immediately notice that there are no cars at the community center but plenty at the Indigo. We go to The Indigo, park, and go in taking a side dish, potato salad. I take it to the kitchen, start mingling with the people, none that I recognize???? Talking with an elderly lady, she wanted to know how I was related. I told her who my dad was Page 17 of 29

and continued to try to make her know of me. She finally says I m the youngest sister. Umm...A light bulb goes off; my dad and all his siblings are deceased. John and I looked out the front door thinking my sister had driven there to get closer to the handicap ramp. Of course, they are not there. We run to the back door and see them driving out of the parking lot heading back across the street. About that time both she and one of my brothers were trying to call us to let us know that we should be at the community center on Hwy 258, a couple of miles way. I had to know what reunion we had wondered in on so I asked another lady, What family reunion is this? She replies, The Jones. (My family reunion was The Staton s). I ran into the kitchen where the food was being prepped for serving, grab my containers of potato salad and said to the lady, Ma am, I m sorry, we re at the wrong family reunion, grabbed my potato salad and the lady replied, That s ok honey, you are more than welcome to stay and join in with us. I thanked her, left and arrived for the third try at the correct location. FUN Of course, John and I couldn t wait. We ribbed my siblings about the crazy mixup. We cornered them in the parking lot and listened to them blaming each other. We all had a belly hurting laugh together and proceeded to enter the building. I immediately recognized many faces of my generation and older and placed my potato salad in the kitchen. We mingled, socialized and had great fellowship with many family members. The End: At the conclusion, we gathered back in the parking lot, had another great laugh, hugged, said our final good-bye s and headed home for the Roseville July 4 th Parade on Monday. As we rode back we started reflecting over this home visit and both agreed that this was a Funny, Sad, Strange, Eventful but Fun July 4 th Weekend.
