From Your Chapter Director X-toberFest 2017 was a huge success. The weather was great and people had fun. There were plenty of door prizes, awesome grand prizes, impressive O Berry Ctr. Raffle items, fun games and the food was good. I think that covers it completely. X- toberfest was a huge success - over 100 folks attended and we received positive comments from several attendees. Thanks to all of you for helping with the preparation, the gathering of door prizes, and the event setup and shut down. I am proud of NC-X. You guys rock. While on X-toberFest let us know how we did and if you see where changes could be made to improve the event. This is our rally and all input will be logged and considered. We had a great dinner ride to Dale and Jane Petzold house on the 21st. There were 8 bikes and 1 cage on the ride. Dale & Jane showed us around the place and was excellent host exhibiting great southern hospitality. It was an awesome day with ideal Weather, Good food, Great Conversations and a Nice Ride in the Country. Rick Yost and friend Dave Winfrey rode in the North Raleigh Triathlon Sunday, October 1st earning $200 to go toward our O Berry Center fund. Thanks to Rick and Dave for stepping up at the last minute to participate in the event. As I write this article several of us are preparing for the Myrtle Beach weekend trip sponsored by C2 in Smithfield. As always it promises to be a great weekend. Events in the works for this month are Region N Finale Rally November 2 ~ 4th in Johnson City TN and NC-N Toys for Tots ride on November 18th in Mebane NC. I am sure we will work in a couple of Chapter visits and impromptu rides. Let s not forget Veterans Day on the 11th, Thanksgiving on the 23rd, Black Friday and the official start of the Christmas holiday shopping season. Yes, I know, didn t forget NC-X gathering on Sunday November 12th. Until Next Month "Have Fun and ride safe". John 3 of 27

Wake Forest Wings Chapter NC-X Wake Forest, North Carolina From Your Assistant Chapter Directors Can you believe you are reading the November 2017 NC-X Newsletter? Time is going by fast, but 2017 has been a good year for us. During the previous month NC-X had our second annual X- Toberfest, and from what I saw it was a big success. This event is one of the main ways NC-X raises money that is donated to the O Berry Center as part of GWRRA s Gifts On Cycles program. If you would like to know a little more about the O Berry Center click on the following link: There were many people involved in making the event successful, but much of the credit goes to John Bryant. I don t know how much time and effort he put into the event, but it had to be a lot more than we realize. John, thanks for all you do for NC-X and your GWRRA family! As I write this article, Sue and I are getting ready to head to Myrtle Beach for the annual C2 (Smithfield) Myrtle Beach weekend. We have attended the event past two years and it has been a blast each time. The fellowship with friends is great, the snacks are tasty (and rumor has it calorie free) and the games are always fun. We hope to see lots of our GWRRA friends there. Be sure to take the Older Than Dirt quiz at the bottom of this article. I got a perfect score! Roger and Sue Turner 4 of 27

From Your Motorist Awareness Coordinator The following article was taken from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation concerning how motorists and motorcyclists can more effectively co-exist. Issue Statement: When motorcycles and other vehicles collide, it is usually the other (nonmotorcycle) driver who violates the motorcyclist s right-of-way (NHTSA, 1998). There is a continuing need to help other motorists think motorcycles and to educate motorcyclists to be aware of this problem. Where We Are: Several factors combine to cause drivers of other vehicles to overlook motorcyclists and subsequently violate their right-of-way: Motorcycles and their riders are a relatively small component of the total traffic mix. Therefore, their visual recognition is reduced. Many drivers do not anticipate routine encounters with motorcyclists in traffic. Motorcycles are smaller visual targets and are more likely to be obscured. Research shows drivers who also ride motorcycles and those with family members or close friends who ride are more likely to observe motorcyclists and less likely to collide with them (Brooks, 1990). This indicates that drivers can see motorcyclists, whom they might otherwise overlook, if they mentally train themselves to do so. The visual problem is compounded by a variety of visual limitations confronting drivers: Automobiles have obstructions and blind spots that can obscure or hide a motorcycle and rider. These include door pillars, passengers heads, and areas not visible in the mirrors. Other conditions affecting the vehicle such as precipitation, glare, and cargo can further impair a driver s view and obscure motorcyclists. Objects and environmental factors beyond the vehicle, including other vehicles, roadside objects, and light patterns can make it more difficult for drivers to identify motorcyclists in traffic. Traditional driver distractions, such as passengers, eating, smoking, reading, shaving, applying make-up, and managing audio systems, continue to be a problem and may be increasing as new distractions emerge. Portable phones and other communication devices, and features such as in-vehicle navigation systems, which divert more attention inside the car, may be increasingly distracting drivers. Where We Want to Be: Motorists should be aware of motorcycles and take special care to identify and acknowledge their presence. Motorists should avoid distractions and compensate for visual obstructions. 6 of 27

Motorcyclists should compensate for unaware motorists by increasing their conspicuity, lane position, riding with headlights on during daytime, and wearing brightly colored and retroreflective protective apparel. How to Get There: Both drivers and motorcyclists need to become more aware of the visibility problem. Educating drivers to become more aware of motorcycles and to consistently consider their presence would appear to be a very promising strategy for improvement in this crucial area. Getting drivers to consider the possible presence of motorcycles and the need to look for motorcyclists, situations where motorcycles may be obscured, and techniques for detecting motorcyclists, would be useful in reducing right-of-way violations by other vehicles. This problem must be addressed on a number of fronts: Further research into why motorists fail to see motorcyclists could supply information on how to educate drivers to expect motorcycles to be present and to detect them. Mature driver programs that teach older drivers how to deal with their changing abilities should emphasize that motorcyclists may require an additional effort to detect. Rider education and training efforts need to continue to emphasize this problem and stress that the rider must assume the responsibility of avoiding a crash situation caused by another motorist. Initial and recurring rider education and training should continue to emphasize that motorists will frequently fail to observe motorcyclists, even though the motorcyclist is in plain view. Rider education and training must continue to include training on strategies and techniques for coping with this conspicuous problem. All driver education and training (mature driver programs, high schools, remedial programs) should include a component on motorcycle awareness. Expand avenues to promote motorists awareness of motorcyclists through billboards, visitor centers, media, motor vehicle departments, bill statements, banks, grocery stores, gas pumps, etc., where there are captive audiences. Recommendations: Educate operators of other vehicles to be more conscious of the presence of motorcyclists. Remind motorcyclists that they may be overlooked and provide defensive strategies for overcoming this situation. Include questions regarding motorcyclists on driver s license tests and include information in driving manuals. 7 of 27

Include the completion of a motorcyclist awareness class in sanctions against motorists found guilty of violating a motorcyclist s right-of-way. Adequate funding needs to be devoted to the development and implementation of motorist awareness issues. Until next month, Safe Riding! Brad From Your Educator Another Way Out It is true motorcycles fall down. They are also light, narrow and hugely maneuverable, so you might as well learn to exploit their strengths when things get ugly. So, don t just brake hard in a hairball situation. There is almost always an escape route. Swerving into Mr. Brown s front yard could be a lot better than plowing into the vehicle that turned in front of you. Always try to have an escape route planned. Andre 8 of 27

From Your Couple Of The Year WHAT A WILD RIDE District Couple of the Year It has been a whirlwind the past couple of months for Joy and me; starting with riding the approximately 1200 miles to Grapevine, TX for our first Wing Ding. (This bike trip surpassed our previous longest cross-country ride which had been down to Key West, Florida.) Wing Ding was fabulous if not somewhat overwhelming with so many people and so many things going on simultaneously. The facilities were quite extravagant with a 4.5-acre indoor atrium which tempted one to miss the wonderfully perfect riding weather. Our riding revealed Texas to be a state of contrasts: wide open ranges and hustling, bustling overcrowded cities. We enjoyed the seminars, toured the vendors a few times over (dropping way too much money) and most importantly met many new friends. We had such a great time, we are looking forward to next year s Wing Ding, especially being closer in Knoxville, TN. So mark your calendars now! Taking a short ride to Dallas, we coupled Wing Ding with a visit to our son and daughter-in-law who were newly stationed with the Army at Ft. Hood, TX. We had hardly gotten back home (second week of September) when it was time to ride again- this time for Wings Over the Smokies at the end of September. Joy and I had agreed to stand in the Couples Selection; preparation for this took much of our time until then. We are humbled to be able to serve the state as the District Couple for What an honor! We are excited to have the opportunity to continue visiting all the chapters and spreading Joy across the state (pun intended). We look forward to finding new and different ways to spread our excitement and enthusiasm for the GWRRA organization and for the Couples Program across the state in the coming year. Joy and I were both privileged and flattered to have been volunteered to be your Couple of the Year for John said that it was an offer that we could not refuse, and we are so glad that we didn t. We have thoroughly enjoyed representing our great chapter across the state. We tried to visit every chapter in the state and only missed a few. 9 of 27

WOS was a huge success thanks to the hard work of many different people; all brilliantly led by Cindy and Roy Brant. Establishing a brand-new venue for such a large event certainly presented many challenges all of which the team overcame to result in an outstanding rally. The Haywood County Fairgrounds turned out to be an excellent venue, providing large wide-open facilities and great access to mountain riding, lodging and food. On top of all of that, the local officials were glad to have us there and welcomed us with special attentions, ride escorts and hosted street dancing in downtown Waynesville. And of course, there was then X-toberfest in the middle of October. A lot of planning and preparation must go into putting on this outdoor festival. John and the entire staff did a wonderful job and once again the weather cooperated, and the turnout was good. Fun was had by all. Immediately upon packing up our car and trailer with the X-toberfest stuff we drove home and without unpacking the car or the trailer, showered, changed vehicles (different cage) and hit the road for our 10-day tour to visit our two brand new grandbabies; one in Philadelphia and one in Denver. Having grandchildren certainly gives one a new outlook on life. We look forward to being back at home sometime around October 27th and being able to sleep once again in our bed Oh, but wait, then there is the Region N Rally. Although we are somewhat travel weary, we do look forward to attending the final Region N Rally and we look forward to supporting our outgoing District Couple of the Year, Brenda and George Harper, in their quest to become the last ever Region N Couple of the Year!! Maybe after that things will slow down Oh, but wait, then there is Thanksgiving, O Berry Center, Christmas and New Year s Whew! 11 Family? Are we a family? Are we a family called riders? This is a question that racked my brain on our latest ride. What makes a family, and if we are one, what kind of family have we morphed into? September 8, 9, and 10, 2017, Sandie and I rode up to Hagerstown, Maryland to meet with a small group of riders who hail from Ohio, Canada, and South Carolina, for a one day ride around Hagerstown, Md., and into the lower parts of Pennsylvania, including some parts of Gettysburg. We rode 311 miles to the hotel we all were staying at and enjoyed a wonderful 130 miles ride, only to ride back another 300 plus miles. What kind of person does this? Could this be called a family reunion? What brought this to the forefront of my mind was a simple event during the latter part of the actual ride. We had stopped in the late afternoon for the mandatory motorcycle ice cream break. A must have for almost every official, organized, motorcycle ride. As we were all sitting on a rock formation wall, enjoying our ice cream treats and talking, I looked around at all the faces of our friends. Added into our normal group were the daughters of some of the riders. The riders of our motorcycle family were comfortable enough to invite their children to join us on the ride. Does this make us a family? Many years ago, Sandie and I were at the GWRRA Delaware District Rally and I was talking to Big Ed about all the people we have met along the way through GWRRA. Big Ed told me that he had met thousands of people via GWRRA over the years and he could not count on one hand the number of people he did not want to meet again. I thought about this powerful statement and had to agree. Sandie and I had met thousands of people and I could not think of one that I would not like to see again. Can a family say this? About 8 years ago, Sandie and I called the kids and told them that we were going to be gone for two weeks. Both of them asked where are you going this time? We told them Alaska. They both said we want to go. We told them that we were going with our motorcycle friends. They told us, they liked our friends and our friends always made them feel welcome and treated them with kindness and were part of the motorcycle world. 11 of 27

When one of our GWRRA friends lost his son due to illness, our motorcycle world gathered to stand with him and his wife as his son was buried. His wife looked around and asked out loud were did all these bikers come from? We came as part of their family. Yes, we are a family. Good times and bad, long distance and around the corner, we stand together. Maybe not all the time, but we stand as a family. Look around you at the next chapter meeting or ride and ask yourself, would I have met these wonderful folks if not for the respect shown to one and all. Family by choice! Stay Safe. 13 From Your Ride Coordinator NC-X had a fine showing at Wings Over the Smokies. Best of all, our very own chapter couple, Glenn and Joy Kennedy won the District Couple of the Year competition! Congratulations to the both of them but was there ever any doubt? We are so very proud of our newly crowned District Couple. John Bryant was recognized as University Trainer of the Year. Congratulations John. This was a very well-deserved honor. To top it off, John conducted two training seminars. Our very own and extremely talented and creative Debra Lawler was recognized for the creation of the 2017 Wings Over the Smokies illustrative theme. What a superb creation. Ask any of the volunteers to show you their shirt if you haven t seen the logo. Of course, many of the NC-X members won door prizes, went on great rides, attended seminars, and spent money. I had to leave before closing ceremonies so I don t know who won the new Goldwing but I know who didn t! Yours truly! Oh well, maybe next year when the newly redesigned Honda Goldwing is available. If you can believe the leaked news and videos, this will be a radically redesigned touring bike and I m really excited about the possibilities. However, the proof will be in the test ride. We held our second annual Xtoberfest on October 14 and were very well supported. NC-X gave out a tremendous number of door prizes. Everyone I spoke to were extremely complimentary of the effort by our chapter in putting on this event. We also gave out four great grand prizes. They included a set of tires, a 3-day vacation, and two riding jackets. A very special thanks to Roger Turner for donating the vacation package. The chapter volunteers worked very hard to pull this off and it was a resounding success. We arrived around 7:00 a.m. to get things set up and continued non-stop until around 3:00 p.m. Our intent had been to have a group dinner ride afterwards but we were all very tired after a busy day so John suggested a later date for the dinner. That date came on Saturday, October 21 and we can thank Dale and Jane for offering their wonderful home to us for this dinner. They have a beautiful 10-acre homestead with a nice pond in the back yard and many modern aspects to their property. We really had a great time visiting with them and look forward to doing so again. Our next travel adventure will be the weekend of October 27 at Myrtle Beach. I look forward to a weekend of fun and relaxation because for me personally, this has been an especially busy and exhausting year. After that, we ll have our annual ride planning meeting on November 11. It would be great if you re able to attend and/or send in your ideas for travel for next year. Until next month, safe riding! 14 Xavier's Rally Fun Wing Ding What a whirlwind August, September and October have been. I traveled to Grapevine Texas for the 39th annual GWRRA Wing Ding, to Waynesville North Carolina for the 34th annual Wings Over The Smokies and our own Chapter s second annual X- Toberfest. At the end of August, James, Debra and I left for Wing Ding in Grapevine, Texas. This was a few days after hurricane Harvey hit Texas. There was talk about gas shortages. Not too concerned we went anyway. I rode with Debra. It took three days to get there. Each day we would ride for a couple hours then stop, fuel up and take a break. Unfortunately, there was no time for sightseeing. That was until we stopped in Paris, Texas. We had no problem finding fuel on our way to Texas. In Paris there is a scale replica of the Eiffel Tower. I tried to climb the tower but found it was too high for someone my size. Even though I did not make it to the top, the view was amazing! When we arrived at our hotel we had to wait for our room. Then when we got our room the door would not lock. James said it was not safe and rode to nearby hotel. He was surprised to find they had a room. We were glad to move to the new hotel. That room was much nicer. After a much need night of rest, we headed to the Gaylord Texan where Wing Ding was being held. It was not officially open yet but we were able to get our registration packets and checked out the few vendors that had arrived early. That evening we went to a Texas style welcome party in downtown Grapevine. Before dinner we browsed several shops. I met several nice armadillos. I think there was an armadillo in just about every shop. The armadillos let me ride them like ponies and taught me some Texan lingo. It was a rootin tootin good time! After browsing we enjoyed some great TexMex (Texas style Mexican food) and ice cream for dessert. 14 of 27

The next day we had to take Debra s bike to a shop in Hurst, Texas for some brake work. While we waited for the work to be done, I rode a four-wheeler the wrong way and got in trouble. After that, I was banned from the four wheelers. By now it was late morning and getting close to lunch time. We asked for lunch recommendations. The Blue Bonnet Café was highly recommended. So, we all jumped on James bike and rode over to have lunch. When we walked in we could not believe our eyes. We felt like we stepped back in time. It was filled with I love Lucy memorabilia. The stuff was everywhere. Who knew there was so much Lucy stuff to collect. Our waitress was sooo nice. She made sure we had plenty of tea to drink while we waited for lunch. The food was simple home cooking and so good it would make you slap yo mamma (practicing my Texas lingo). When we finished we rode back to the shop to find Debra s bike would not be ready until the next morning. So, we all got back on James bike and rode back to the rally. We had already missed opening ceremonies and did not want to miss anything else that day. After the rally closed for the day we all rode to downtown Grapevine for a light parade. We arrived early and had time to walk around and make new friends. I met several other mascots. But my favorite was a teddy bear couple in a bike trailer that looked like a pickup truck. 15 of 27

When the lightshow started Debra was disappointed she did not have her bike. But that quickly faded when we started rolling. We waved and smiled the whole time. It was so much fun seeing the streets lined with people waving back. The following day we picked up Debra s bike. She was a happy camper. That afternoon we had volunteered to checked armbands. All was going well until one guy did not have his armband and thought he would start something. But James and Brad got him straightened out. When the rally closed for the day we gathered in the Texas Ballroom for a Disco Ball. We were served TexMex and dessert. We had to leave early because Debra was not feeling well. So I did not get to show off my disco moves. Now it s Friday, the day before closing. Debra slept in a little bit and felt much better. So we return to Wing Ding. We visited many of the vendors and got a few freebies. We met up with James brother Brad. Like his brother James, he too is a long tall Texan. He bought a new tire and had it mounted. While Brad waited for his tire to be mounted, Debra and I walked around. I met the blue guy from Monster s Inc. Even though he was much bigger than me, we had a good time visiting. But then again just about all of the mascots I have met are bigger than me. And all equally nice. Once again after the rally, we gathered in the Texas Ballroom. This time for a BBQ dinner and J&M sponsored entertainment. Dinner was good but I liked dessert the most. After dinner Bo Gerrard entertained with his comedy show. When he finished J&M gave away a lot of prizes. We were not one of the lucky winners. The last day started with the Grand Parade. We gathered at the First Presbyterian Church parking lot. While waiting for the parade to start we visited with members of Oklahoma Chapter X. They were a hoot and a holler (again Texas lingo). The parade was led by the international president of GWRRA Anita Alkire and several other international officers. They were followed by flagged bikes in a two-row staggered formation. I think just about every state and several countries were represented. Debra and I were one of the first bikes to follow them. Debra let me look out of her jacket so I could see the parade. It was a beautiful sight. 16 of 27

After the parade I met James and Debra s daughter Cara and their grandsons James and Andrew. James (Paw Paw) gave the boys a tour at the place where he used to work and then we had lunch at Babe s. What a great place. After lunch we drove back to the Gaylord and showed the boys Debra s bike. They got really excited when they saw it all lit up and got to sit on it. Their visit was short but sweet. Cara and the boys left shortly before closing ceremony. The closing ceremony was bitter sweet. The bitter part (or should I say sad) was Anita saying good bye to all of the Region Directors and other officers. The sweet part was filled with money and prize giveaways. Once again, we did not win anything but had a lot of fun. Sunday morning we left to come back home. The day began with us trying to find Premium gas for Debra s bike. We thought if we got far enough from the city we would find Premium. So, we rode about fifty miles out of the city and found Premium at the second gas station where we stopped. The rest of the trip when great. You know the old saying There s no place like home. I found myself saying that when we reached the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was good to be home again. Since I have so much to write about I will save the rest of my rally stories for the last two newsletters. Stay tuned. Many thanks to all who submitted articles early so I could get this issue out before I left for the Region N Fall Finale. NC-X ROCKS Special Invite to All.. Reminder: Write an article and submit to me at Editor@WakeForestWings.org for a chance to win a neat prize at our next monthly gathering. You must be present to be awarded the prize. Happy Reading! 18 Actions Speak Louder Than Words As it was mentioned of X-Toberfest, it was indeed a great success. O Berry proceeds are always greatly appreciated. On behalf of myself and all of NC-X, we thank you for your generosity. Along the same subject of O Berry, there was a donation of $ made to the O Berry center by two participants of the Raleigh Triathlon. Our very own Rick Yost and his buddy Dave Winfrey rode escort for the event, alerting of any instances to the participants along the route. They earned $ each for their efforts. They are the heroes who donated their earnings to the O Berry center. It is these types of unselfish acts that make these two men true heroes in my book, as I am certain it is in anybody s book. Our hats off to you gentlemen! Ride Safe. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to personally acknowledge Rick Yost once again in the outstanding job he does for the chapter as Web-master. He has devoted many tireless hours to make the site what it is. The Webmaster s job is not that easy and tasks are great. Many of you including myself, don t realize how much time, knowledge and expertise one needs to complete those tasks month after month. Rick, my brother, I am very proud to call you my friend. Your exemplary actions and leadership by example are noticed. NC-X and our GWRRA family recognize those actions.
