3 Older Adult Plan: Liz Tucker Liz said that the final meeting of the present committee will be on May 20 th. This year is the 50 th anniversary of Beaverbrook - watch for happenings. Treasurer s report: Liz Tucker Liz presented a financial report for the year to date, which shows a loss of $3, Advisory Committee: Valerie O Callaghan 1. Digital Projectors As the Council now owns three projectors, Janet asked if the Council would consider selling the City the newest projector. We looked at various options, as #1 projector is still working but doesn t have the highest resolution, #2 has rapidly deteriorating pixals and #3 is the new purchase. Since Janet mentioned that she could not justify, in her budget, the rationale for buying a new projector to address the needs of those who rent this facility for activities, a suggestion was to ask the Council whether they would consider donating Projector #1 to the City, with Projector #3 as a back-up. Cam MacNeill moved that we give projector #1 to the City, that projector #2 go to the garage sale, and that projector #3 (the new one) belongs to the Council. Seconded by Eileen Gorgichuck. Carried: Shuffleboard This activity is suffering in attendance - March - 0. Discussed sending out a notice for May and June to ascertain interest. If none, this activity will not be included in the Fall schedule. 3. Summer Shutdown Mention of the Centre s shutdown for annual maintenance. There are no big ticket items and dates will be shared - June 27 - July Learning Series We discussed possible topics for the upcoming Learning Series. She is open to any and all suggestions. Currently Janet arranges the purchase and delivery of goodies for these seminars. As there is a new shopper for the Cafe, is this something that the shopper could do Council discussion? If so, need a procedure which aligns with what Frank is currently doing. Otherwise, Janet will continue to arrange for the goodies. Polly will speak to Frank. 5. Fall Open House Janet is looking for the best way to promote the Centre and bring in new people for the 2016 Open House. There is a question of whether we should have a full open house or simply provide pancakes in the future, (Fall Open House 2015 will remain unchanged). The idea is to reach out and let people know the Centre is here and what it offers. The open house route may not be the best way and Janet is looking for suggestions maybe a Try It Campaign. Various ideas were put forward and discussed. -4-
4 6. Merging Activities Janet was asked to look at the compatibility of activities (with smaller attendance), to ensure that these activities continued. Janet was open to this provided a convenor could be found to do the administrative. Travel: John Kern Bridlewood Retirement Community (located in Kanata) Wed May 6. Trip includes bus, tour and lunch. Café Liaison: Polly Erskine-Henry Polly reported that everything is going fine in the café. Computers: Michelle Brodeur She reported that she needs one more cable. We need to upgrade some things. The Ipad has been found. We need more seniors who want lessons. Events only should go on Facebook. Cam suggested that the newsletter should advertise the need for people for lessons, and also Facebook and Twitter. There should be an inventory of the equipment that we have. Also need to prepare a procedure for use of the equipment. Far West Fun Fest: Liz Tucker Liz advised that the booklets with registration forms are now available. -5-
5 Special council events: The Retirement Living Fair took place on Sat Apr 11. We had 35 for profit exhibitors offering goods and services for older adults plus the Council, Kanata Seniors' Centre, WOCRC and City Health Dept in attendance as not for profit exhibitors. We had over 250 people attend the Fair. Complete report on Fair will be prepared in the near future. Planning is underway for the Annual Council Volunteer Recognition Award on Jun 4. Flyers and Nomination Forms are available at the Council Cafe, Centre s Front Desk and posted on the Council website and completed forms are due back no later than May 15. Invitations have been sent to area Seniors Residences suggesting if they have a volunteer at their property who meets our criteria they could submit the name to us prior to May 15. This event is operated in conjunction with Centre s' Volunteer Recognition Day on the same day. Planning is underway for the the Annual General Meeting on Mon Sept 14. More to follow at future meetings. New business: Peter van Boeschoten Peter advised that Janet is willing to research mics that are wireless. He also said that early on money was set aside for expansion of the Centre. As that probably won t happen, it might be worthwhile using some of those funds for up-dating the sound system. It was agreed in principle that Janet proceed with her research.
