6 ALFRED'S DELICATESSEN BAY SURF SHOP BLANCHE'S DINER GRAMOPHONICS POOR MAN'S COUNTRY CLUB then Rice Village s roots were in the depression-era (1930 s), when visionary John Olson acquired 60 vacant lots. Since then, the Village has grown organically to become the most beloved urban district in the City of Houston. In the 40 s - 60 s, the neighborhood developed slowly. The Olson s first shopping center in the Village was built in These innovative original buildings still stand today. During the planning process, John Olson studied some of America s finest retail properties, including Country Club Plaza which served as a model for the Village s first leases. The influx of young families into West University Place, Southgate and Southampton in the 1980 s began the Village s revival. In the mid-1980 s, Rice University began acquiring land, sewing the seeds for development of a large concentration of national specialty shops that has been productive for the last 30-years, and remains the retail core of the district to this day. The contemporary and artisan evolution of the Village architechure and merchandising is underway.
