1 it GPO CANBERRA BUSH WALKING CLUB INC NEWSLETTER Box 160, CanberraACT26Ol III]!UJLUSJ Dickson Library Community Room Wednesday 15March, 8.00 pm onwards Make the most of the evening and join other members at 6. OOpm for a convivial (BYO) meal at the Vietnamese Restaurant at O'connor Shops (the one on the corner). fly to be early to ensure there will be ample time to finish and still get to the meeting in comfortable time. PRESIDENT'S PRATTLE Briefly, I'd like to mention a number of issues referred to by the Club's Constitution: "appreciation and conservation of the Australian countryside, bushland, fauna and flora and to encourage field studies" and "support the establishment and preservation of national parks and wilderness areas". Although ours is not a political club, I feel that we bushwalkers should have more than just a passing interest in conservation issues that can affect our walking areas. Recently, there have been a number of "green" issues, ranging from the debate on woodchipping, the reduction of the nominated Deua Wilderness area, the future management of the Royal National Park and the potential for inundating much of the Kowmung River by the raising of the Warragamba Dam, to name a few. How well do you keep informed about these kinds of issue? The general media will offer some infonnation. The Bushwalker newsletter of the Confederation of Bushwalking Clubs in NSW, the Conservation News newsletter of the ACF, Broadcast newsletter of Greening of Aust. and the National Parks Bulletin are some of the better sources of information and can be borrowed from our Library. Onto other club matters. Walk leaders please phone the Check-in Officer as soon as possible after a walk. He shouldn't have to chase you up. Sylvia Flaxman has offered to co-ordinate a First Aid Course if there are enough members interested - please phone her about the details. The club thanks Joyce Weeks for donating much of Bill Burford's bushwalking gear to the club. Some may be sold at the coming gear sale and the proceeds put to another tent, perhaps. You might be interested to know what some of the Commitee are up to when you don't see them walking! Alan is soon to be jetting to all capital cities for work reasons. David is still in South America, flies back to Canberra for a week and then off to Japan again for work. Rob is at present bushwalking with a group of his students from Katoomba to Mittagong. The last I heard of Maurice was that he was in Sydney and then going to Tasmania. Mike's lounge room is covered with books and magazines in preparation for the library. Roger went blackbcrrying with Rosemary, who is also helping to index the library. Last week I camped with my school out at the Cotter Reser*. In David's absence, this IT is a team effort by Alan, Bill and myself with Paul driving the software! So now you know why I said that being a member of the commitee should mean being a member of a team. It also explains why we need YOU to lead walks (I've asked committee members to lead at least 4 walks every 6 months, and mostly we have) P Janet Edstein

2 WALK SECRETARY'S WAFFLE Thanks to the people who attended the walks planning evening. They appeared to enjoy themselves and contributed a number of walks. However, the program remains very thin from Easter onwards. The two months after Easter is probably our best walking period, after summer heat and before winter cold. Historically it is the time we get most activity on club trips - but it can only happen if leaders come forward, particularly as two of our three most prolific leaders of recent years are not leading at all this year, and the other is trying not to. This is a great opportunity for you to program your favourite walks. If you want to go walking it is up to you to help generate the type of walks you want on the program, either by leading some yourself; or by encouraging others to lead them. There is no mysterious "they" (who should put on more trips/organise more social events... ) available - you are "they". It is particularly important to include adequate easy day trips. They are the starting point for most newcomers, and a program without a heavy lacing of easy trips inevitably results in overall decline of the club as newcomers, and others, look elsewhere for their walking, and oldies get old, lose interest, or leave Canberra. I have a description of about 30 easy trips available, plus all ITs since October 1972, if you want ideas. Several walks placed on the program at the walks planning evening were from these sources. Don't worry that a walk has already 'been done'. Most members have been here less than three years so trips run prior to that effectively are new, and in any case a maximum of 16 people did the trip last time, so there are still plenty of potential 'customers. Some trips are programmed every year (or more often) and still attract large numbers. For example, I have received numerous complaints that I did not put on an Ettrema day trip as I have every February for the last nine years. Incidentally, none of my trips are 'copyright', and I doubt whether any regular leader would or could object to someone leading a trip they have led in previous years, particularly if they are not leading it this year - 'I can't think of where to lead a trip' is no excuse P Akin Vidler PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS Ailan Millican, Holder; Ann Bull, Kaleen; Jan Murrell, Rivett; David & Leeanne Tennant, Gowrie. NOTICE OF MOTION The Club approve the expenditure of $150 to update and expand the Club library. Some of the books under consideration include: Exploring Narnadgt & Tidbinbilla, 25 Family Bushwalks, Walking the South Coast, Walking the Wilderness Coast. Moved: Janet Edstein Due to a lack of space resulting from the inclusion of the membership list, we are unable to include members' walk reports in this issue (Sorry again, Roger). Further contributions would be grateflilly received. The Gang of 4 Acting Editors

NOTICE TO ALL WALKERS: Every person taking part in a Club activity does so as a volunteer in all respects and accepts responsibility for any injury or loss personally incurred. The leader should check with you that you are capable of completing the proposed trip - by assessing this from observation on previous walks or by asking where, when and with whom you have walked previously. 5 SO, YOU'RE DELAYED - SO WHAT What should you do if delayed or lost? The problem in answering this question is that those delayed often include other parties in their thinking. The other parties being the folks who are expecting you back at a certain time, including friends, family and the Club Check-in Officer, Mike Pedvin. Thus, those delayed will often try to secondguess what those at home are thinking and what they are likely to do, My advice to you and to those at home is: act in your own self-interest. Concern with what others may think or do may result in you over-extending yourself and placing yourself and others at greater risk, thus converting what may have been a delay and a simple inconvenience to injury and longer delay. As a general rule, people are given an opportunity to get out by themselves. Accordingly, there is no reason for people to be concerned that their delayed return will automatically result in a search and rescue call-out. It is important that those at home, as well as those out walking, are aware of this rule. Just how much time should be allowed before a search and rescue party is called out will depend on whether it is a one-day or more-than-one-day walk, the weather conditions and where the walk is being held. If those at home are concerned as to what is an appropriate response to a particular circumstance, they can contact an experienced bushwalker to get advice on what may be appropriate. Should this be the Club, this will give the Club time to warn people of a possible call-out, should it turn out to be necessary to contact the police and call out a search and rescue team. So, if you are held up or geographically embarrassed, take your time, have a think about where you are and what your resources are, before you decide on your action or non-action. The time to worry about others is when you get out, and not before. Once you are out and as soon as you can, call the Check-in Officer or, failing that, another Committee member. If neither Cheek-in Officer nor another Committee member is contactable, call the local police and let them know you're OK. Even if the police have not been contacted, any call-out will eventually have to go through them. Mind you, one of the best meals I ever had on a walk was near the junction of the Tuross River and Myrtle Creek when, unlike this year, flood waters meant we had to stay out an additional night. Metr we had all tossed in what food each of us had left, we had a very enjoyable pot-luck - preceded by sherry. On this occassion, I did not remember the telephone of the Check-in Officer. Instead, I called work (as the Checkin Officer would call there to see where I was) and the ACT Police. As the then Check-in Officer, Alan Mikkelsen, will tell you, and has often reminded me, I erred on this occasion by not leaving a list of people on the walk in the letterbox. P David Campbell Club Search and Rescue Officer PUBLISHER'S PLEA Some members may not be aware of the significance of the IT collation which is on the program every month. All members are welcome to come to this event where we fold, label and sort the ITs in a convivial atmosphere. It is a great opportunity to socialise with your fellow members and learn about past, ftrture and prospective trips. Hosting an IT collation is a good way to contribute to our social agenda and enjoy the company of bushwalkers at home. I am currently seeking venues for future collations. If you would be willing to provide your home, please give me a call on (H), (W) P Bill Brown

12 THE LANGUAGE OF BUSHWALKING Bushwalking: a word created in Australia in the twentieth century. The grammatical rules used are; From the Germanic origins of English, the nouns bush and walking have been conjoined, in the same manner as the nouns chair and person may be joined to form chairperson (another twentieth century invention). The process of noun formation is still current in modem German in famous words like Weltkrieg, a twentieth century invention meaning world war An original English device whereby adjectives with a verbal lexical connotation may become treated as nouns. Thus walking may be an adjective describing, say, the noun club (walking club - a club you use while walking; or Walking Club - a social organization of people who walk), while walk may perhaps originally have been the verb to walk, which has later been treated as a noun a walk and has now become a verbal adjectival noun conjoined with bush to make the noun bushwalking. English is, technically speaking, a mainly analytic language (as opposed to synthetic languages). In synthetic languages the grammatical function of a word is usually indicated by a special ending or by changing the core section of the word. German, old and modem, is a synthetic language. English is a result of the mixing of old Germanic languages from Angleland and Saxony (about 5th century), old Scandinavian - mostly Danish and Norwegian (9th and 10th centuries) and old French (11th to 14th centuries).. By 1500 the main grammatical structures of modem English were established, which is why we can still make a fair go at understanding Shakespeare (around 1600), especially when we hear it spoken in a natural way (it's much harder to understand Chaucer, around 1350). How does all this relate to bushwalking? In an analytic language, words don't have special endings or special changes to show grammatical function. In English we have not completely lost all the old inflections, but most of the time we rely on the lexical meaning to put our words together in the right order to make sense. In the sentence I consider the editor pedantic we know that I is the subject of the sentence, the editor is the object and pedantic is an adjective describing the editor. In the sentence The editor considers Frank pedantic we know that The editor is the subject, Frank is the object and pedantic describes Frank. The editor appears the same in both sentences, but in a synthetic language like German it would be den Herausgeber in the first sentence, but der Herausgeber in the second. Der and den not only tell you whether Herausgeber is subject or object in the sentence, but also that it is a masculine word. (Oddly, the English word the is perhaps derived from the German die, which is feminine). In English, as you know, we don't have masculine or feminine (or neutral) gender applied to words, and we don't know the sex of the editor unless we make a close examination of the person concerned. This is why the way we use language is important in bushwalking. We have some inflections' still hanging about in English. We use he for a male person and she for a female person. When we call an editor he or she, in English we are defining the editor's sex. This is a feature of the English language, and it has been used to 'good' political effect by men since about Shakespeare's time. The word leader should be used in such a way that no gender predisposition is assumed. Because English still has some ancient grammatical hangovers it is difficult not to use sexual markers, but it is now - in the late 20th century - important to continue the natural changes in English towards the analytical language forms. We dropped thee, thou and ye in favour of you in the 17th century. We can't use he, she, her or him as generic terms, but it is not inelegant to follow the same pattern and use they or them. Among young people this is already happening in speech and becoming more common in writing as older pedantics fade away. This is how changes in English usage have always come about. The use of language is inevitably political, but the issue has been confused in English because for nearly 500 years we have not used inflections like the older languages from which English is derived, but we have kept a few where it has been politically powerful to do so. Male dominance has been a feature of our society for most of this time and the language has been used to help maintain power. In an egalitarian society, of which I think bushwalking is an especially goods example, it is necessary to encourage the appropriate changes in the language to go ahead. A leader, whoever they may be, knows the terrain, studies the maps and takes the rest of the party to new areas. Let's go with them, I say. Frank MeKone [who admits to having led only one walk in CBC in 21 years]

Maps: Blackbird Knob, Hopeville, Blackwater falls 1: Leader: Keith Thomas (h), thomaskcpcug.org (Internet ). Transport cost about $ April - Budawangs Circuit - MJM-R (I amended, but did not rewrite RB's preview, despite frivolous treatment of a magni cent walking area - A I') This boring four day walk is basically a walk that Barry Munns will not want to go on, but a misleading description could attract him and others.
