The British Stamp Act for America of 1765 placed a formal tax on official documents of all kinds, sparking the American Revolution. The tax was repealed a year later. A nice example of the service in Canada. Complete document are exceedingly rare. $ SOLD

5 Page 5 / 27 Item General Vanier PC DSO MC CD 1939, 10c Chamber, 20c Fort Garry tied by Montreal Place d Armes duplex cancel on cover to His Excellency Major-General the Right Honourable Georges-Philéas Vanier (while Ambassador) paying 30 cents airmail rate to France. Oval Canadian Legation Sept receiver on front. General Vanier was an officer in the 22nd Battalion of the CEF, 1918 and the 19th Governor General of Canada ( ). This cover is very interesting as it was sent Aug 28, 1939 (right before the war). GB declared war on Germany on Sept 3 and as a colony Canada was therefore at war too. 6 Page 6 / 27 Item Camp L Cove Fields Quebec 1941, Berlin airmail cover to Leo Kagelberg POW interned in Cove Fields Camp, Quebec City. Triple censored reverse with Base APO machine cancel and front with 23mm censor marking Canada Int Op Censored 21 in red. Camp L was located on the Plains of Abraham. A very late and scarce POW cover. $ SOLD In 1939/1940, military authorities built 40 huts in Cove Fields to house soldiers waiting to ship out to Halifax on their way to Europe. The British Army however lost no time in commandeering them for use as a POW camp. The camp opened in July The majority of those interned were German civilians, mostly Jews who had fled to England and were considered untrustworthy by the British government. There were also 90 prisoners of war (German aviators and sailors). Camp L was only open for 3 months because it failed to meet any of the security standards. It was close to the city. Civilians tourists included could get close to it. Prisoners even passed notes to civilians outside. Security measures were meagre. There was a fence topped with barbed wire, but it could have easily been climbed. There were no floodlights. Guards were lightly armed. Guard duty had been assigned to the Trois-Rivières Regiment, which had 11 officers and 172 soldiers of various ranks. Days were long and there were no jobs for the internees to do. Returned for street and number address with Toronto Post Office Canada D clerk handstamp (b/s) as directory service given marking. Finally not found and sent to Dead Letter Office where it was returned to this Gold Mine company in Parry Sound. 2 cents collect. $50.00
