Nominations for Board Membership 2016 Silvia Barbone MTS I am the director of FEST and Jlag. I am the developer and the main author of the PM4SD Project Management for Sustainable Development certification. I am an international expert in sustainable tourism and project management with an extensive knowledge of tourism policies and practices. I am a senior tourism researcher, an experienced project manager and a certified Lead Trainer in Project Management for Sustainable Development. I design and manage small, medium and large scale projects, supporting destinations to define strategies and empower local communities, I am one of the 10 EU experts selected by the European Commission to implement the European Tourism Indicator System (ETIS). I work with leading global organizations, including UNWTO, UNESCO, UNEP, European Travel Commission, European Commission, European Parliament, as well as local, regional and national public authorities. I am the chief editor of the first blog regarding European tourism policies and practices Tourism Around Europe, which addresses 8000 tourism stakeholders. I am Chair of the Tourism Society Europa Network. I wish to join the Tourism Society Board as I wish to contribute in several ways: transferring the EU opportunities and actions related to the Tourism Society Members in a more structured way, facilitate the creation of new partnerships among the members when interesting funding opportunities are published. Moreover I wish to let the Tourism Society and the Europa Chapter grow and I wish to contribute at strategic and management level with my knowledge and my European and International contacts. John Bridge MTS I am a dynamic, creative and dedicated tourism professional with nine years experience in tourism and leisure marketing, on a global level, previously at made and now with TravelBeat, a startup tourism sales, marketing and representation company with prolific clients: Marketing Greece, Aegean Airways and Warner Bros Studio Tours. I am applying to serve on the board of the Tourism Society because I have the skills to enhance the Society s marketing outreach and brand positioning, increase membership and further develop its events programme by engaging my global network of contacts and using my extensive experience in traditional and new marketing methods. I believe I can work with the team and the board to steer the Society to its rightful place on the world tourism stage, ensuring that it is seen as a must join organisation in the industry.
Brandon Crimes FTS As a Fellow of the Tourism Society I have contributed articles for the Journal, actively supported Society events as well as directly benefiting my professional development from links with the consultants network. In addition, I have gained considerable knowledge and insights of the importance of developing stronger links with sectors of the industry and how these can be of mutual benefit in enhancing the standing of the Society. Given the nature of tourism, I believe in the need to build, not just meaningful and constructive partnerships that provide opportunities for dialogue and debate, but that it works towards a collective voice for tourism. In my time as an academic in the field of tourism, I have directly contributed to a range of research projects in both the private and public sectors, with an emphasis on planning and development of tourism. Furthermore, I have continually supported and lobbied in a positive manner for greater recognition of the vital role that tourism contributes to the economy, but also the wider benefits to communities. If elected, I would dedicate time to supporting the Board and members in the recruitment of individual and institutions that deliver tourism experiences and programmes as well as research that reflects the Society's aims. I would consider it both an honour and privilege to serve a second term on the Board that would be of benefit to members of the Tourism Society. Alison Cryer FTS TCN After a career in Hotel and Restaurant Management Alison moved into marketing with CHM launching the Copthorne Hotels Brand and establishing their network of sales offices as Director of Marketing Worldwide. She launched her own Marketing and PR company, Representation Plus, in 1988, later expanding into Europe. In 2003 Representation Plus bought CIB PR & Representation and in March 2012 acquired First PR, also specialists in the travel, tourism and leisure industries and kept this brand. In 2013 she set-up a digital marketing team. Clients include all aspects of the tourism industry worldwide. Alison is Managing Director of both brands. One of the first ACORN Award winners and Chartered Marketers of the Institute of Marketing, Alison was awarded the Shine Award for Leadership, in 2011 named as one of the most influential 100 Women in the Industry and in 2015 and nominated for The Inspirational Women Award Alison was Chairman of the Tourism Society from 2007 to 2011 and has remained on the Executive Committee and board since. In 2012 she helped establish the first overseas Tourism Society chapter in Belgium. She is on the TCN, Comms and Events committee and initiated the Honorary Fellowship lunches two years ago.
Alison would be happy to remain on the board to help develop overseas, to provide continuity and the benefit of her experience to the board and members and look at creating a "New Generation Tourism Society Group" to encourage more young professionals in the industry to join. Tom Cassidy MTS I ve worked in different roles in Tourism at Liverpool Football Club for the past 7.5 years & have been very successful in innovating & developing products to customer/market needs. Along the journey I ve building up excellent market intelligence on consumer and b2b expectations on local, regional and international markets. I have recently been invited to join the Liverpool Visitor Economy advisory board with the objective of helping the City Region achieve its strategic objectives which has a lot of synergy as I have devised and no working towards delivery of a 5 year vision and strategy for the Liverpool FC Tourism Department. I lead on the LFC s activity with a number of leading bodies and organisations focusing on Inbound Tourism to the UK including Visit Britain, ETOA & UK Inbound & have raised my profile and that of our products during these interactions. Before taking this current role I worked as sales and marketing manager in the events team here so I have a wealth of experience in the sporting, tourism and events industries. If I join the Board I will bring a real enthusiasm for getting tasks done with innovation and an ability to communicate effectively, which is vital in the dynamics of a Board. John Gallery FTS John Gallery is chairman of the Tourism Society Yorkshire Chapter that he helped to establish and which stages a range of events both business and social each year. John is a member of the Tourism Consultants Network and is keen to develop the Society s young and up and coming members having held several events in partnership with students at Yorkshire Universities. John is managing director of the Great Potential Consultancy that he founded in 1999 to assist hotels, heritage attractions, destinations and other tourism businesses with their sales, marketing, PR and strategy. John is chair of the research group at the Business Visits and Events Partnership, a director of the Bedern Hall Company, a York medieval guild hall, and is a voluntary guide in the City of York. John also recently established a new online fundraising platform, moregiving.co.uk. Philippa Harris MTS I believe I can add value to the Tourism Society through diverse, senior experience in outbound and domestic tourism with holiday brands, a transport company and now a service agency. My 30 years has included roles as Marketing Director at Eurotunnel and First Choice Holidays PLC, and as Managing Director at luxury brands Sovereign and Harlequin Worldwide. In
the last few years I have taken Take One Media, which promotes UK attractions and destinations to visitors, into a position of market leadership through increased professionalism and innovation. I am passionate about UK tourism and its potential, and want to play a role in growing it for the future, hence my interest in getting involved in the Tourism Society. As a strategic and tactical Marketing Professional an area of particular interest would be getting involved in driving increased membership of the Society through improved communications and targeting of new audiences. Jenny McGee MTS In applying for this role I bring over 30 years of tourism management experience gained through marketing, communications, policy and strategy development roles at the UK's national and regional tourist organisations. I am a passionate advocate for the positive influence tourism can have on society and the contribution it makes to a nation's quality of life. Throughout my career The Tourism Society has provided a rich source of knowledge and support, challenging the accepted, stimulating debate. Through my membership I have broadened my knowledge and in doing so met keen minds and made good friends. As a Board member I would particularly work to ensure that this rich heritage is made available to the new generation of tourism professionals and their colleagues in related fields. Mike Jones FTS Mike is Managing Director of the Delta Squared consulting group based in Maidenhead, Berkshire. Working with a broad range of hospitality industry clients, Delta are experts in Sales, Marketing, Distribution and Revenue Management, and the technology platforms that support them. He has a degree in hotel management and has held senior positions with Hilton, InterContinental and Forte. Mike is an authority on travel industry reservations and distribution regularly speaking at industry events. He is also non-exec director of a further three hospitality companies in the hotel systems and related areas. Mike has been Hon. Treasurer of the Tourism Society since Peter Wear FTS Peter Wear (55) FTS is a European-based leader in the wider Hospitality, Tourism, Leisure and Property arena, in which he has practised for over 30 years. Peter graduated from the University Of Surrey School Of Management in 1985 and went straight into senior management with the opening of a new catering contract at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
In 1987 he moved into property and consultancy, becoming a leading figure in the leisure property market over the next 20 years, with major industry players such as Savills, Christie & Co, Touche Ross Management Consulting (Greene Belfield-Smith Division) and Berkeley Scott Group. Peter now divides his time between traditional consultancy work and Executive Interim Management/troubleshooting. He is a Partner in Salon Hospitality Consulting LLP, one of Europe s leading specialist consultancy practices with seven equity partners in the UK and Europe. Peter has bought, sold and developed over 1bn of leisure businesses and assets in his career to date. As well as turnarounds, recovery and restructuring, his specialties also include visitor destination development and urban and rural regeneration. Being based in France gives me a different perspective on the Tourism Society and if re-elected to the board I could add value in the areas of European/International development of the Society, as well as participating (albeit sometimes via conference call link) in the next stage of the Society's evolution.
