Fax ORIGINAL CHARTER # 1011 issued - November 1 st, 1921 June 24, 2015 President Don Sparky Leonard chaired his last meeting as our President. He has passed the torch on to Fannie Vavoulis. The evening was full of laughter and fellowship, even the weather cooperated by giving us the picture perfect evening we all hoped for. We dined on chicken & ribs, small potatoes, salads, corn on the cob and pie. Sparky thanked everyone with a bottle of wine to take home. He also handed out pins to his Board members. Pres Sparky presented Fannie with her new Presidents badge and pin. Fannie then presented Sparky with a Past Presidents badge, pin and a Rotary watch as a gift from the Club. Jack Pearson and Tom McNaughton were both remembered with Rotary s highest honour by giving their wives Pat Pearson and Rena McNaughton each a Paul Harris Fellowship. These certificates will be given to Pat & Rena at a later date. Paul McDonell was also presented an award for dedication to Rotary after taking over the role of Sergeant at Arms for his friend Jack Pearson. All Past Presidents in attendance gave a speech to reflect their year as President. The Club is truly blessed to have so many dedicated members. Sparky and Laurie proudly displayed their hand crafted bar in the shape of a baseball bat on display and in use as our bar by our bartenders Brett & Lynn Smith. Andy Watson spent put countless hours building this one of a kind bar that will put the finishing touches on the basement of the Leonard s home. The cost of the bar will be donated back to Rotary. Sparky can be proud of his year as our President by seeing the TV Bingo fundraiser that Past Pres Kelley Doyle laid the ground work for become a reality, bringing Mike Love an original member of the Beach Boys as the Key note speaker to the Annual Banquet and securing the Beach Boys Concert to take place on Aug 8/15 in Tecumseh Park. We thank Andy & Kathy Watson for hosting the evening at their Christmas Farm. We all congratulate Sparky on his amazing year as our President. It requires many hours of hard work to make a Club successful but in the end it was a great experience that he will never forget. The members look forward to the Rotary year ahead with Fannie as our President. We wish her all the best.

It is hard to believe it is now 28 years ago since that year! RI President was Charles (Chuck) Keller from California, Pennsylvania - year s theme was United in Service Dedicated to Peace - International Convention was in Philadelphia - 1 millionth member (now 1.2 million) joined Rotary with 22,000 Clubs (now 35,000) in 162 countries (now 205) - RI gained major observer status at the United Nations and UNICEF - declared polio and five other communicable diseases to be eradicated as reasonable goals - still only men in RI, no women was through 86/87 when women were first permitted to join - at RI Convention in Philadelphia the PolioPlus Campaign reached its first major goal of raising $120 million world-wide - Chatham Club that year reached its fundraising goal from within at over $80,000 Chatham Club - DG was Mav Shanghvi - received the RI Presidential Citation Award along with the Dresden Club which our Club had sponsored in was named the District s Most Outstanding Club of 53 Clubs - $90,000 was raised to build the Concession Stand, washrooms and storage at Rotary Park and Fergie Jenkins Ball Park - first Rotary InterAct Club was started in Chatham - three Vocational Service Awards/Scholarships started and presented to three graduates at St. Clair College, Ridgetown College and U of Windsor still ongoing - Herb Todgham spoke for and led the Campaign for the Club PolioPlus Campaign and raised over $100,000 from members within

11 - 8 Clubs in Kent raised $162,000 - at the time worldwide there were 300,000 polio cases yearly now only handfuls - PP Glenn Smith and Ross Eberlee were named PHF s - RI Foundation and Club along with a Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) grant funding started a Major Project for 90 women called Literacy Training for the Centre for Women in Ketti Valley, South India - restructured the Club Committees for the four Avenues of Service as recommended by RI - named the first PHF as a non-rotarian - former Police Chief Clare Bagnall - reviewed and revised the Club Constitution and By-laws for the first time in over 25 years - increased the number of Student Youth Exchange Outbounders from 4 to 9 - nominated a local university graduate for a Rotary Foundation Masters Scholar who then studied Mandarin at U of Hawaii Jeremy Lee still lives in Hong Kong - GSE Team from D6380 went to Australia one member from Chatham - membership increased from 110 to 115 still no women and the Club was still not ready to permit women to join had to wait three more years before Karen Kirkwood-Whyte joined! - had a very strong Board with dedicated members on committees to achieve big results for the Club, the Community, within the District and Internationally! The Presidencies of Sparky in 2014/15 and now that of Fannie for 2015/16 have and will continue to offer to the long line of dedicated leadership in the Rotary Club of Chatham.
