1 The Rotominder Service Above Self Rotary Club of Chatham The Links of Kent Golf Club, Events Centre 120 Indian Creek Road West Phone Wednesdays at 12:15 P.M. Fax ORIGINAL CHARTER # 1011 issued - November 1 st, 1921 March 23, 2016 By Keith Dawson Rotarian Colin McGregor introduced Hugh Logan, our guest speaker this week. Hugh, a graduate of Concordia University, was director of Culture and Recreation for the City of Chatham and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent. Currently, he is the executive director of the Chatham-Kent Community Foundation, a part-time position, and also works for RM Auctions and a local funeral home. He was accompanied by John Mallory, the current chair of the foundation. The foundation was organized in 1990 by John Bradley with the assistance of Rotarian Ross Eberlee and others. Today, the foundation has assets of almost $6 million and has made grants of approximately $1.6 million over the past 25 years. All donations to the foundation are 100% endowed, with all expenses paid for by fund-raising instead of donations. The foundation is accountable to the people of Chatham-Kent and all grants are made to local community needs. There are community endowed funds, fields of interest funds, designated funds and donor advised funds. The foundation was fortunate to receive a commitment of $11 million over the next 20 years from South-Kent Wind with two million already received. The board consists of 11 volunteers, supported by other directors at large. There are special events, investment and grant committees. In 2015, 63 organizations received $360,000 in grants, ranging in size from $500 to $20,000. Major donations have been made to the local hospice, the Ridgetown Kiwanis, the CK Animal Shelter, Wallaceburg Council for the

2 Arts, Tilbury Leisure Centre and the Blenheim Youth Centre. Several Rotarians have been supporters of the foundation. We appreciate the update by Hugh and our thanks were expressed by Rotarian Paul Mayrand. 3 ANNOUNCEMENTS PETS The Great Lakes Rotary PETS Presidents-Elect Training Seminar took place March in Kalamazoo, Michigan with close to 500 attendees from 6 Districts covering almost all of Michigan, up to Wawa and the Soo, northern Indiana and of course SW Ontario. The PE s, PN s and their spouses/partners had a chance to attend the many plenary and breakouts sessions and the opportunity to meet within their respective Districts at which specific training sessions took place under the leadership of DGE Michael Caruso and Trainer Karen Gabrys. This PETS is organized by the current DG s, DGE s, DGN s and many PDG s. I was privileged to sit on the core program committee on Friday evening to begin the planning process for next year s speakers program. Our Multi-District can certainly be proud of this high caliber Conference located in the Radisson Plaza Hotel where it has now been for the last 14 years. The weekend previous I also attended the PETS in Toronto which is for the three Districts which run from Ingersoll through Toronto to Cobourg/Belleville and then over to Niagara Falls and into New York State close to Lake Erie to the Pennsylvania border. About 250 attend this one in the BMO Training Centre where it has been for 8-9 years. It was an excellent opportunity to gain an idea of the Rotary geography in Ontario, especially in and around the Toronto Region. Barry Fraser NAYEN The last week of February I accompanied DG Henry Dotson and Steve Youtz, Chair of our District Youth Committee to the North American Youth Exchange Network (NAYEN) three-day Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio hosted by Ohio-Erie Region. NAYEN represents the three Countries of Canada, United States and Mexico with 23 other countries represented as part of the very close to 500 in attendance. The Rotary 10 Districts from the 6 States and Ontario were the official hosts. Terrance McNaughton of the Blenheim Club is this year s President of NAYEN. Currently he is representing NAYEN at an International Conference in India. NAYEN is the coordinator for the 3-country Rotary Youth Inbound and Outbound Exchange Programs. Without a doubt this was indeed an outstanding Conference with very strong plenary and breakout sessions. The Conference next year will be hosted in Calgary. In past years it has been in Montreal, Cancun, Orlando, Sacramento, Anchorage and Little Rock. The photo to the right represents of course the presence of Mexico at the Conference! Barry Fraser DGN
