The centre is on the leading edge in biodiesel and other bioeconomy research. With the recent emphasis on green energy sources such as wind and solar in this area, there are now several projects that are studying green energy as it applies to agriculture. There are biodiesel projects where items such as manure and kitchen wastes are utilized and biogas projects where inputs such as soyabeans and ethanol waste produce outputs such as heat and oil. Dr. Schaafsma talked about one biodiesel project that is underway at the Ridgetown campus. It is a pilot co-op project with a projected output of 800,000 litres. Some fuels may contain up to 20% of biodiesel which is safe and useful under normal conditions. However, biodiesels can become quite sluggish and more like a gel under freezing conditions. One by-product of this project is glycerine. Another project is a biogas project that has government

2 funding of $3 million (federal and provincial). Since this type of project uses agricultural crops, one of the main problems is moving the product from the field in an economically feasible way. Dr. Schaafsma is enthusiastic about his topic, and although his talk was quite technical at times, Rotarians can see that there are great possibilities for biodiesel and biogas in the near future. Our speaker was introduced by Rotarian Win Elzinga and thanked by Rotarian Rob Watson.
