1 SERVICE ABOVE SELF The Rotominder CHATHAM, ONTARIO Rotary Club of Chatham Wheel s Inn, Tree Room rotaryc@ciacess.com 615 Richmond Street Phone Wednesdays at 12:15 P.M. Fax ORIGINAL CHARTER NO issued - November 1 st, 1921 President Wayne Schnabel PRESIDENT OF R.I. DISTRICT 6380 GOVERNOR SECRETARY EDITOR Dong Kurn Lee Stanley Sherman Keith Dawson Sandee Frederick Lakeside Drive 19 Braemar Blvd Executive Secretary Seoul, Korea Royal Oak, MI Chatham, ON Rotary Club of MAKE DREAMS REAL N7M 6G2 Chatham WEDNESDAY May 27, 2009 DATE PUBLISHED May 29, 2009 Rotarians were updated on the progress of the Chatham Capitol Theatre Project by Rotarian Dan Donaldson who is also the General Manager of the Chatham Capitol Theatre Association. This progress was brought to life in a power point presentation of photos from November 2008 to the present date, all shot by photographer Claus Anderson of London, ON. These photos can be viewed at the Capitol Theatre website and are to be featured in a souvenir book that will recap the journey to completion. Dan wishes he could provide a final completion date but an opening of spring 2010 is in the cards. In November 08 work was begun to create a third floor where none existed before, with its access point from a new balcony. Walls were added, a floor, roof and extension of the elevator shaft to reach the third floor. While this was going on the excavating began on the third faze inside the main auditorium. There is now a basement where through the generosity of the Rotary Club of Chatham there is now a lounge that bares the name Rotary Lounge. There is a non-public connecting hallway from the lounge to backstage to allow passage of staff without disrupting the performances. It took a lot of creativity on the part of the consultants and architects to install supports for the 2 opera boxes that were thought to be supported by concrete underneath. These opera boxes will be functional but not as seating. One will be used as a dimmer room and the other as a sound room. The main floor had been removed along with many truck loads of dirt to prepare for the exciting day of pouring the concrete floor over the rebar. The old stage house was dismantled in an afternoon, making way for the new seven storey building complete with backstage elevator. Upon completion of driving some 120 piles into the ground and a foundation poured the contractor hopes to be in a position to provide a date for completion. There has been much controversy surrounding this project with the principle misconception of so much tax money being spent on the project. Locally, for the record, the municipality has spent a total of $1,000,000 of local tax dollars with the additional $7,000,000 coming from a provincial wide tax base. For the first time to Dan s recollection federal art funding has made it onto the agenda of the national political stage.
2 The Capitol Theatre will not replicate what happens at the Kiwanis Theatre but be available to house entertainment that requires a larger audience. The Capitol Theatre has as much to do with celebrating the human spirit as it does with economic development. It will aid in business development, community enhancement and professional recruitment. Dan says I do what I do in a large part because of the impact and exposure that live performance can have on people s lives. It is the marriage of the artist and the audience that is the essence of what he does, to be the broker between the artist and the audience, to ensure that the experience is one that bares repetition again and again. Dan was introduced by Carolyn Barko and thanked by Ken Tremblay.
26 The Capitol Theatre will not replicate what happens at the Kiwanis Theatre but be available to house entertainment that requires a larger audience.
