Birthday Celebrations: Bill Brescani and Al Verstuyft Happy Dollars George Shanks had a fiasco with the red grape harvest, but recovered well. John Duser missed last week. The dictionary delivery by Michele McClure, Steve Simich, Tom Webber and Edgar Calvelo was rewarding see the smiling faces of students and teachers. Tom Webber agrees, especially Steve's presentation. Chris Burns had sad dollars because she missed last week s meeting and happy dollars for 49ers. 2

3 Club Notes: Rotary Foundation Month so Ted Witten will be looking for donations. The will be a board meeting Nov 15 at 5 PM. Tom Webber reported the "Shot Felt 'Round the World" screening at the Napa Valley Film Festival is a film on Dr. Jonas Salk. It would be good to talk about Rotary involvement. Dr. Peter Salk, his son, will be involved. The film has been helpful in raising awareness, and even in fundraising towards polio eradication. Here's a link to our page on the festival site: ( idanus_napavalley2011) It will play three times at the festival: Friday, November 11, 11:00 AM at Jarvis Conservatory; Saturday, November 12, 11:00 AM, Barrel Room 1870 at Villagio; Sunday, November 13, 11:00 AM, Gliderport at Indian Springs. See poster with additional information. Auction Wines solicited by Michele McClure raised money for Polio Plus funds. John Duser pointed out the barrel for Food bank donations. Need nonperishable items. There was considerable discussion on the Home Makeover show on Pathways. The general consensus was the main object to make the production look good. The show missed the importance of Pathways. Rotary was not mentioned. Nov 12 Hiway 29 cleanup contact Ted Witten. Breakfast 8:30 AM and work at 930 AM. Have six volunteers but could use two more! Nominating Committee is proposing a slate of officers for July to June Tracy Tinsley President, Mike Riddle Vice President; John Kempkey, Michele McClure, Michael Redman, Travis Hart for Board Members (need 2 members). In two weeks nominations will be accepted from floor. Dec 13 elect July officers. 3

They raised $10,000 for the food bank. CanDo s motto is easing the path from intentions to actions. Having done in a day projects is part of their success and not reinventing the wheel.

4 Grania Lindberg, Camille Kaijankowski and Hillary Zunin NV Can Do (Better Bag) The speakers discussed replacing plastic bags with reusable bags, and they brought bags for us! Hillary explained the CanDo the organization started 2.5 years ago make the valley shine. There first project was an asking for $10, ten cans of food, and send ten e- mails. They raised $10,000 for the food bank. CanDo s motto is easing the path from intentions to actions. Having done in a day projects is part of their success and not reinventing the wheel. They help get volunteers for Food Bank, read to children at Farmer's Market, and make mulch at Scott Cr. or others. From 15 volunteers has grown a mailing list of 960 people. Their work is on the environment and sustainability issues; plastic waste that is the focus of plastic bags; easy alternatives as they provide this evening and telling you what to do (reusable shopping bags). Making plastic bags involves fossil fuel, energy, and results in disposal into river, bay and oceans. Sea turtles think plastic bags are jelly fish. The bags photo degrade into small particles now found in the tissues of fish. The alternative is reusable bags, take it with you for shopping (take bags into store). Chico bag rolls up into a ball and opens up to full bag. Do not put bags into blue cans for recycle. Recycle plastic bags at grocery stores. October was Better Bag Month for the City and County of Napa. Hillary was an English teacher but enjoys facts like 68 million single use bags are used in Napa Co. per year and they will last for 500 years. Last January Soles for Souls gathered pairs of shoes helped by Biaggi Bros. shipping. Clinic Ole is working to handle and eliminate prescription drugs or nutracueticals reentering environment. The Q&A was on using the Napa phone book center section for recycling info such as for motor oil, Recycling glass, cans, and paper are a good start.
