Page 2 Chapter Directors Chapter Directors Charles & Kathy Friedman Director s Desk Hello Chapter O! Maggie Valley is only 24 days away! Mother Nature is giving us a little tease of fall (Maggie Valley) weather this week. I can not wait to get to the mountains. I like breathing the fresh air, being so high in the mountains you think you could touch a cloud, wearing sweatshirts, and being with all of you. Charlie Willett said the ride schedule was winding down. I was taken aback on how true his statement was. Was it not last week we were planning Spring Wing Warm-UP? Do not worry, we still have plenty of rides and events ahead. Dave and Lynn s annual picnic is just around the corner. We are so fortunate they open their doors (literally they open their back doors and we sit on the porch) to us. It is very relaxing sitting around talking with everyone. Don and Janie s 50 th Wedding Anniversary is the same day. Their children are having an Open House for them. I hope everyone will stop by and tell them Congratulations. Did everyone have fun at Cathy Robert s birthday party last weekend? Dan and her sons did an excellent job surprising her. Charlie Willett lead us on a beautiful ride. You could not ask for a better day. Chapter O members did a great job not letting on about the party. No one even wished her a Happy Birthday. If I could I would nominate everyone for an Oscar. You were great actors! There are some great rides in our future. Also, Dennis and Debbie are hosting their annual Clay Pigeon shoot in October. The special events we have are one reason we stay such a close-knit family. Each and everyone of you are special. Charles and I are so fortunate to be your Chapter Directors. Until the next time Charles calls AIS, Kathy & Charles
Page 3 Rider Education Vernon Hunt Rider Educator To All Members and Members to Be, What an exceptional month of great rides and some surprising rides for all that participated. The weather was not that bad and we actually had some cool days to enjoy those leisurely rides on those amazing roads we travel. We have some rides coming this month that will also be very enjoyable, especially the one that we as a group participate every year in the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. We will have new members that will be participating in the pleasures of riding these beautiful roads to be enjoyed by all of us. We as a group of experienced riders need to share as much information of riding in the mountains with the rest of the chapter. It will benefit them as well as you, so this will be as enjoyable for them as well as all the others in our group. Information and experience of what we will experience while we enjoy our time together are great tools for everyone. To make this trip enjoyable and hopefully trouble free is to make sure you have your two or three wheeler serviced and make sure that the tires are in the best of shape by looking at the tread wear and the depth of the tread is sufficient. Make sure that you bring clothing that will be comfortable as well as effective when driving in the mountains. Rain gear is a must and dressing in layers as the weather and temperatures change as we ride. Also, make sure to take extra medication as unforeseen delays might arise. Make sure family know where you are and stay in contact with them. Please remember to keep updated medical information with you and let someone else in the group know where to find it in an emergency. The main thing to remember is to ride your own ride and stay in communication with the group so we do not lose anyone while we are out enjoying our daily excursions. This will make for an enjoyable vacation for everyone that we can talk about for years to come. Ride safe so we can meet again, Vernon Hunt (Chapter O Ride Educator)
Page 4 District Rider Education Rick & Debbie Warmels District Rider Educator This article is a first for me! For the first time in my newsletter article writing life I actually had a request for a newsletter article! I feel like I have arrived! Thanks for Bianca Prater, Chapter F in Warsaw for her request. Bianca requested an article about GWRRA Team Riding. She pointed out the Team Riding Manual has not been updated since 1995! While that s true, the Team Riding roles and responsibilities have not changed much over time. GWRRA Team riding is not like every other aspect of our lives that seem to change constantly. To start with you must understand Team Riding is just that, a TEAM. Everyone who is participating in the ride is part of the team and has responsibilities to the group. We re not out on a group ride where everyone does their own thing, we re riding as a team, all looking out for ourselves and for our riding mates. I can t get into all the details here so I ll get a Team Riding training module set up for Winter Rendezvous this February. If you d like a module taught just for your chapter or area, let me know and we ll make it happen For this article, I m not going to get into the responsibilities of the Road Captain in regards to planning the ride. This is covered in the Road Captain course. I m going to start with the actual day of the ride. Each team has a Lead and a Drag. These positions should be equipped with C.B. s. Their responsibility is to communicate, coordinate, and maneuver the team safely through traffic, as a unit. The Drag and the Lead have joint responsibility for the safety of the team and safe conduct of the ride. Again, the Road Captain Course goes into detail. To start, the Lead should hold a rider s meeting before heading out. In this meeting they discuss communications (CB Channel, hand signals), route, breaks, assign Drag, and how the group is to be arranged (i.e., trikes in the rear, non-cb rs spread throughout the formation, etc.), and go over the staggered riding technique. Staggered Riding Technique You ask??? This is the key to how safe Team Riding happens. The team travels in a staggered formation within a car lane. The Lead s at the front in the left track. The next team member is in the right track, one second behind the Lead, the next team member is in the left track 2 seconds behind the Lead and 1 second behind the #2 bike in the right track, etc., etc., until all bikes have been positioned. A GOOD TEAM MEMBER: Assumes responsibility to ride with and work with the other team members for the safety and protection of the whole team while on the road, and especially, while in traffic. Maintains steady speed and spacing. Yo-Yoing or straggling behind disrupts the rhythm and efforts of the other team members, and reduces the benefits of riding as a team. Stays alert and announces any obstacle, condition or potential situation which could become hazardous to the team or a team member. Is aware of other team members and maintain staggered formation and safe spacing between team members. Spacing is determined by the road, weather conditions, and visibility. HOLES left in the formation invites aggressive motorists to cut into the formation, which may result in them tailgating our teammate ahead of us. This creates a very dangerous situation. Each team member must protect the other by maintaining appropriate spacing. During darkness or inclement weather, a 2-second stagger and a 4-second following distance should be maintained to provide an extra margin of safety. This article just brushes the surface of TEAM riding. The actual Team Riding training module discusses obstacles, parked cars, parking lots, entering traffic, passing, lane changes, stopping, turning, hills, curves, speed changes, and communicating. It is WELL worth taking or taking again if you ve already had it. Until next time. Rick and Debbie Warmels Indiana Educators
Page 5 Minutes of Last Gathering Pledge of Allegiance Discussed rides the chapter had ridden since last gathering Discussed upcoming rides and changes to the current ride schedule. Those who are riding to Maggie Valley with Charles should meet at Rose Hill 7am on September 15th. Indiana District: 92 county challenge is ongoing. District now has a ride coordinator 13 Indiana Chapters attended the IL Rally $116 was given to the chapter for Paul s idea of selling group photos of the Chapter Birthday. More orders for pictures were made Vernon discussed using brake lights when engine braking. Passing lanes are meant for passing, then move over when traveling on a 4 lane Charles states some states are now cracking down on multi colored lights Don Abernathy won the candy jar with his guess of 83 1/2 candies. Their were 85 in the jar Next gathering September 9th. GWRRA ANNIVERSARY David & Lynn Hunt members since 2002 Ron & Debbie Weis members since 2015

Page 10 On August 18th Dan Roberts and his three boys, Tony (Julie), Matt (Crystal), and Adam (Lacey), held a surprise 60th birthday party for their wife and mother: Cathy. The party started off with a ride through Kentucky, led by Charlie Willett. The ride was beautiful. Then it was announced that lunch was planned at St Margaret s Chapel in Henderson, KY. Cathy did not catch on until her grandchildren came running out of the building. It was a great surprise! Surprise Birthday Party for Cathy Diane & Debbie I would like to thank my husband and my children and their families for the surprise Birthday Party they had for me. The food was great and the cake was even better. Thanks extend to my friends and family who attended the party. I will never forget it. Love you all, Cathy
Page 11 Chapter Cookout August 25th at David and Lynn Hunt s Diane Angermeier 31 Chapter O members attended the 3rd Annual Cookout at Dave and Lynn Hunt s House. Everyone had a great time. The food was great and the desserts were divine. Thank you Dave and Lynn for hosting this party.
Page 12 Don and Janie Abernathy 50th Wedding Anniversary Diane Angermeier Don & Janie Abernathy celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on August 25, An open house was hosted by their daughter Linda, son Lee, daughter-in-law Laura, and their 3 grandchildren: Abby, Emily & Tori. Many Chapter O members attended the party at the home of Lee and Laura Abernathy near St. Wendell. Congratulations to Janie & Don! (pictured left to right back row: Laura, Abby, Linda, Lee middle row: Don, Janie, Emily front row: Tori)
Page 13 Don and Janie Abernathy 50th Wedding Anniversary Diane Angermeier The Floating Restaurant August 26th Paul Davis 9 a.m. sounds like a good time to leave for a ride on a day when the temperature is supposed to be 94 degrees with high humidity. Unfortunately father time has taken a toll on some of the chapter members and they are required to have more time in the morning to get ready for a ride. So at 12 noon, 3 bikes left for Shawneetown where Paul and Jane were waiting. Jim Swanson led the group there and after some S.T.&D Paul took the group on down to the floating restaurant in E-town. After everyone had a satisfying meal of fried catfish and plenty of cool water, the group headed up through the country and in through the Shawnee National Forest. Jim then took the crew back to Shawneetown and over into Henderson to his and Mary's home where we finished the ride and enjoyed some comfortable air conditioning and fellowship.
