2 Do not look outside; do not look at your thermometer. Think Spring, flowers, birds, sun, and D2 CHAPTER RIDES!!!!! We have a fantastic year of opportunity in front of us and now is the time to put plans to paper and create our 2019 ride schedule. Debbie and I already got a list of suggestions for rides this year and with inputs from everyone, we ll have so many great options it will be hard to choose which to put on the calendar. That s a Chapter Director s dream problem! Start jotting down ideas for rides. It there s someplace you always wanted to go, jot it down. If there is someplace you love to go and want to share that with the Chapter, jot it down. Is there something you just heard about, not know if it s worth visiting, jot it down! It s that easy. Our ride planning meeting is March 17 at the New Haven Parks and Rec building on 930 just behind Mickey D s. We ll start at 2 and we ll have snacks, water, and coffee. Last weekend was Winter Rendezvous. It was a blast! Almost 200 people attended from 4 states. The weather was perfect (for February) and a lot of folks were able to head out and enjoy some of the local charms. If you didn t go you missed a fabulous magician show, escape room, pizza and ice cream party, a bunch of door prizes, bingo with super-duper winnings, and a whole lot more! Special call out to Arnie, Joyce, Howard, Mike, and Joyce for helping with the festivities. Your help was noted and truly appreciated. Final thought for the month, next time you see Rob and Natalie Rider tell them thanks for being our ride coordinators for the last several years. Rob has requested to step down from the position to let someone else be able to contribute to the Chapter s success. He says they still plan to be very active in the Chapter. If there is anyone interested in volunteering for Ride Coordinator or any of the other open Chapter positions, please let me know. Many hands make light work and I can tell you from experience, the effort spent is well worth it. Until next time. 4 In the week before Labor Day, Eli, a dirt-poor country farmer won the Lottery - half a million dollars. So to celebrate, he treated his wife and their four kids to a trip to see the Labor Day parade in New York. He booked them rooms in the Sheraton International at the corner of Park Circle and Central Park North. They'd never been to anywhere like New York before, in fact they'd never traveled further afield than their local town, so when they got there they were completely bowled over by all the glitz, glamou Eli and his son Clem were particularly mesmerized by a shiny box with silver walls in the hotel reception. They'd never before come across doors that could move apart, and then automatically close again, as neither had seen an elevator before. So they were totally amazed when a little old lady entered Eli turned to Clem and said, "Son, go get your mother." 8 Taken the winter off? You'll need to take it slow to start with for a variety of reasons. This is what to watch out for on your first spring motorcycle ride. As we hope to emerge soon from the Polar Vortex, it s nearing the time to put your bike back on the road. But, when you do, that first ride of the year can be one of the most dangerous. This is what to watch out for on your first spring motorcycle ride. Sand/Gravel/Salt Over the winter, the roads will have been covered in traction-aiding substances like these. They tend to stick around for the first few weeks after the snow melts and gather in corners and intersections. We all know what the consequences of hitting this stuff in a corner or while braking is, so keep any eye out for it. Potholes These are formed as water expands and contracts with freezing; they re created over the winter. There ll be more of these in the spring than there were last fall. Small ones aren t a huge concern so long as you don t hit one while cornering or braking, but in the Northeast, potholes can get big enough to swallow a Bentley, let alone your bike. Subsidence With heavy rains and snowmelt, erosion can occur, undermining the footing of roads, especially in the mountains and out in the boonies where there s little road maintenance. Pay special attention to the edges of the asphalt and the verges, where previously firm ground can crumble away. Animals Spring means babies and animals migrating in search of food. Pay particular attention near bodies of water during dawn and dusk hours. You wouldn t want to kill a duckling, would you? Flowing Water Snowmelt or busted water pipes can create streams of water running across roads in unexpected places. Even if water is not currently present, its previous flow could have swept sand and other debris across the road. Cold Temperatures You re eager to start riding again, we get that, but doing so in just-above-freezing temps requires a little extra caution. Even if all other hazards are nonexistent, your sport bike tires aren t designed to work at temps below about 50 degrees and you ll need to account for the cold s effect on your body and dress accordingly. Other Riders It s not just you who s skills are rusty. Other riders are already a major hazard on the best of days, but on their first ride back in the spring? Watch out, particularly on popular riding roads. What You Can Do About It In town and on the highway, leave extra following distance behind other vehicles; they can obscure potholes, gravel and other hazards until it s too late. Ride with extra caution, leaving more room than usual to slow down, change line or avoid hazards. Your skills will be rusty too, so leave some extra speed in your pocket to account for that too. Heading to your favorite riding road for the first time in a while? Run a reconnaissance lap looking for hazards before you try and take it at your normal pace. Even if the day starts warm, the sun still sets early. Make sure you pack a clear visor and stuff a silk balaclava and glove liners under your seat in case temperatures drop unexpectedly. Speaking of keeping your head and looking where you want to go, where do YOU want to go this year in regards to riding? Do you want to keep riding like you ve always ridden or are you ready to put in some effort and make yourself the best and safest rider/co-rider you can be?!?!?!?!?!?! That s right, it s time your hard working Indiana Rider Course Instructors are trying to get our 2019 rider courses set up. We have a dedicated group of trainers who will go just about anywhere in Indiana to put on ARC, TRC, Trailing, and Trike Trailering courses. These courses are fantastic ways to bring your riding and co-riding skills back from their long winter s nap and get them fresh and crisp for the upcoming riding season. We also spend some time getting your brains back to thinking about riding and give you some time proven tips on keeping riders and co-riders safe from cagers immersed in everything except driving. Does this sound like something you, your Chapter, or your region of the state needs and wants? (The correct answer is HECK YA!) Well we need your help! While we have dedicated instructors, we do not have the means to find open, flat, paved areas suitable for a riding range in your neck of the woods. While we love to ride, we can t travel all the roads in Indiana hunting for possible ranges. What we d like is for you to help us out by giving us suggestions on possible locations. Could be a church parking lot, college campus, business, abandoned business lot, etc,. We can deal with some light poles, drains, etc. What we re looking for is a lot that is 310 x 206 for ARC (includes 40 runoff on all sides) and 280 x 200 for a TRC. In a perfect world the location would be available both Saturdays and Sundays so the instructors only have to spend one weekend at that location. We d need access to the site on Friday to get the range marked. We will also need a classroom (room with tables, chairs for up to 12, and power) but that s a lot easier to find once we know where the range is going to be. PLEASE help us out. We love putting on these courses and we want to give everyone relatively close access to training. Putting the power of the over 2000 Indiana GWRRA members to work on this means we should have potential ranges coming out of our ears!!!!
