Page 2 Chapter Director Mike Schreiner Chapter Director Hello friends! I m writing this letter while on vacation in wonderful Charleston, SC. My family and I are here to tour this beautiful and historic city. I hope many of you are planning a summer vacation. Get out there! In June we had a wonderful gathering. We had a big turnout of members. We welcomed guests from three chapters in Indiana and Illinois. We welcomed Wayne Mitchell to his second gathering. We also welcomed Bill and Gayle Smith to their third gathering and into our Chapter O family. We are so glad to have you. Also in June we had twelve bikes and one car attend our annual Mystery Ride. Once again Charles and Kathy Friedman did a wonderful job of planning and leading a two day ride. On Saturday morning the weather did not look good. But by the time we had breakfast and lined up to start the trip, the rain had stopped and the weather was nice the rest of the day. This year we ended up in Jackson, TN. We visited Rusty s TV & Movie Car Museum that displayed original and replica cars from popular movies. Rusty has an impressive collection, and Rose and I really enjoyed it. On Sunday the weather was nice, and we had a safe and fun ride. Thank you Charles and Kathy for such a fun weekend! I also want to express my sympathy for Charles and Kathy for the loss of Charles mother on Sunday of our ride. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Besides the rides on the schedule, we only have a few dates to keep in mind in July. Our chapter gathering is on July 12 th, and on July is the Region D Rally in Portland, IN at the Jay County Fairgrounds. I will be forwarding an with all the info concerning the rally. Looks like a good time. Let s go and support the District! Well I have to get back to family time. I hope to see you all soon. Check the schedule and join us for a ride! Michael Schreiner

Page 3 Rider Educator Vernon Hunt To All Members and Members to be, Wow, what can I say? The year is half over and the weather has been a challenge to go on rides. But as experienced riders we know how to address those challenges and enjoy the days we go out and ride on those two and three wheel steeds. It is so enjoyable to get out and ride with fellow members and meet even new acquaintances as we travel on a new venture everywhere we go. What makes these trips so enjoyable knowing that we can travel with other experienced riders and engage conversations that will add to our knowledge of their travels that we might undertake ourselves? No one knows where the next turn will take as we travel down those roads that we might never have been on before or have traveled before as time changes everything. Being prepared is the best way to enjoy those trips. Have you made a list of the things that you need to take with you on that long or short trip you are planning? Has anything in your life changed and you need to make adjustments to make that trip you are planning? When is the last time you have updated your phone contacts, medicine list, and insurance and let us not forget to look at our driver s license and plates that are attached to the vehicle you are using? Have you planned a route or are you just winging it? Do you need to call ahead and make plans for an overnight stay in a certain city or friends? Don t forget to check the flashlight and please take your camera and take plenty of pictures so you can enjoy the memories that you have made on those trips you are on. We as fellow riders enjoy talking to fellow members and people along the way as we enjoy what life has let us take in as we travel the roads before us. So to make your trip enjoyable, plan well and make those memories that will last you a lifetime. Ride Safe so we can meet again, Vernon Hunt (Chapter O Rider Educator)

Page 4 Chapter O Gathering 1) Pledge of Allegiance 2) Guest: Paul & Jane Davis from Florida Chapter 1-Y, Wayne Mitchell (his second meeting), Chuck Jacobs, Pat & Glenda McKie, Tim & Becky Cliff from Chapter IN Z Bloomington, IN, Bill & Gayle Smith who moved here from Georgia (their third meeting) and Tom & Pam Waller from Chapter IL PI. Welcome to all. 3) Congratulations to Mike & Laura Stonestreet who recently got married. 4) Dennis Juncker received the Golden Eagle award for all of his hard work on teaching ARC and TRC classes around the tristate. 5) Dennis Next year GWRRA will be hosting RITC classes in Portland IN. This is a 40 hour class that last over 3 weekends and will qualify you as a riders coach. There are scholarships that will assist with your hotel bills. 6) Bob Hoagland has been in touch with Lemonds Honda in Fairfield. Gary Carter, the owner of Lemonds would like to host Chapter O to show off his improvements. Gary will provide dinner. This is rain or shine. Bob needs a head count so Gary will know how many to cook for. The ride will take place on August 8th. We will meet at our Evansville spot at 2: 30. 7) Richard thanked Vern for all of the good riding education he has given the Chapter over the last few years. As he and Martha were riding home from visiting family in Texas, they encountered two corvettes racing down I55 South near Jackson Mississippi. He estimates they were traveling around 150mph. The wind coming off of the cars actually blew their bike off of the road. About 3 seconds after they passed their bike they were cresting a hill when the back corvette blew up. The driver was not wearing a seat belt and died. The passenger was life flighted to a near hospital. Just think, what would have happened if the car had blown up about 3 seconds earlier? 8) Vern discussed that it seems like more and more people are running stop signs and red lights. People are distracted and always in a hurry. He stressed the importance of doing your T-Clock (forms are on the chapter web site) before each ride. As you are checking your tires be sure to check your center stand and your kick stand. The springs sometimes get weak and need replaced. 9) Ginny received the Golden Chicken Award (nominated by Kathy Friedman) for planning a Sunday ride to a place that is Closed on Sundays. 10) John and Ginny discussed the importance of checking the bike s swing arm. Ginny recently rode with the Chapter to Owensboro and noticed the bike was not working correctly. It was the bike s swing arm.

Page 5 Ride to Lemond s Honda Bob Hoagland has planned a ride and a dinner to Lemond s Honda in Fairfield, IL on August 8th. Gary Carter, owner of Lemond s Honda will host the Chapter for Dinner. Gary has made lots of improvements and would like to show them off. This ride is rain or shine. Bob Hoagland needs an accurate head count so Gary knows how much food to get. The ride will meet in Evansville at 2:30. Little Kentucky Dragon 2015 Ride Dan and Cathy We found a nice little ride that starts just out of Clarksville, TN. This 56 mile Little Kentucky Dragon is 100% in Tennessee. The total ride from our house and back turned into 331 miles. The roads are beautiful and contained the most curves we have driven on this year. Smack dab in the middle of the ride was a ferry across the Cumberland River. The Volunteer state is not free because this ferry cost $1.00 per vehicle to ride. As the ride went on, the roads became more and more narrow. The center lines became lighter and lighter before they disappeared all together. Then came the oasis; Fat Daddy s is a floating bar and grill on the Tennessee portion of Kentucky Lake. On Saturday afternoon, they had a live band that was not half bad. We enjoyed a very expensive lunch then came home through the Trace, which is always a great ride.

Page 6 A Note from Indiana GWRRA District Directors Hello everybody! First of all, I would like to thank all of the members who attended the Indiana Spring Warm Up in Bloomington, IN last week. It was Theresa s and my first as the recently appointed District Director s and without the help and effort of the GREATEST DISTRICT TEAM, we could have never accomplished it. We had 371 members attend, and 21 vendors had just about everything you could need for you and your motorcycle, as well as 3 food vendors to help you survive the long hard weekend. John and Shirley Lee once again led our Thursday Dinner Ride and had 86 bikes along for a great ride and great food what more could ask for? We had a total of 8 guided rides through out the Indiana hillsides, all were greatly attended and enjoyed some enjoyed to long. Right LONNY? There were Leadership seminars, Riders Ed Seminars, and of course, we had our bike and light show. As for the light parade, we tried something a little different this year. We took 102 bikes through the country with all of our lights on to a little park in Ellitsville, IN where we again lit up our bikes all to enjoy and then rode back through the cool country night air back to the fairgrounds. The weather, I personally take credit for, it was fantastic. The campers were all set up in there little villages and you could hear all about past rides and rides to come, as well as the famous POGO stick. Right, Kay? Our Friday night Ole fashion cookout with hamburgers and hotdogs that were grilled by the master chef s of Chapter L2, homemade coleslaw and baked beans, and for dessert chocolate brownies seemed to please everyone and once again The district team was there to serve any and everyone. We had a brief scare when our own Region D leader, Lee Tieche had a close encounter with a falling tree on Hwy 37, which caused him to have a spill on his motorcycle and a ride to the hospital, but tough as he is and with the knowledge he recovered about all gear at all time, and what to do in a ride emergency, from our own Rider s Ed. He came out OK and was briefly back later night, much to our relief. At closing ceremony I discussed the reason behind Can you See me Now and how wearing the bright GWRRA colors not only makes us safer and more noticeable on our motorcycles. It also causes a lot of questions when were out and about like what s the deal with the bright shirts and who are you all with or Are you all crazy all of these questions give us the opportunity to explain GWRRA and the fun we have, and it opens the door to invite them, to a ride, a gathering, or a rally. And who knows maybe make a new friend or better yet a new member. All I know is anything you work this hard for, and receive the blessings from, and make lots of new friends, all while enjoying riding what I consider the greatest motorcycle in the world is summed in one word WOW See you all this year at a ride near you hopefully not to near remember its all about the ride Until then: RIDE SAFE, LAUGH LOUD, MAKE NEW FRIENDS, AND ENJOY SOME ICE CREAM Mike and Theresa Albright Indiana GWRRA District Directors

Page 7 Guidelines to Enjoyable Group Riding Riding through the hills and curves on a warm summer day. Looking ahead and seeing a string of bikes all in good formation. The camaraderie between you and your fellow riders is what it is all about. Motorcycle riding is enjoyable but also can be dangerous. Here are a few guidelines from American Motorcycle Association that will help keep everyone in your group safe. 1. Organize the ride. This can be as informal as standing in a parking lot and discussing the ride or as complicated as having a special meeting. Make sure all riders have input to the ride destination and that all riders have at least an idea of where the group is heading. 2. Riding in a group does not mean you surrender any decision making when it comes to your safety. Ride your own ride. Do not go any faster than you feel comfortable going. 3. When discussing your ride, also discuss the stops along the way. Consider the stamina of the riders, the experience of the riders and their limitations. Remember, these are your friends. 4. When creating your formation it is best to have your experienced riders at the lead and running sweep. Consider the least experienced riders immediately behind the leader. This allows them to adjust their speed easier. 5. While riding, do not fixate on the motorcycle in front of you. Remember your basic training. 6. If the group is riding faster than your comfortable let the group know. If you want to drop out of the ride and ride your own pace that is ok too. You may reach your destination a few minutes behind the others but you will get there. Remember it is all about the fun. 7. All riders are responsible for making sure their motorcycles are mechanically up to the ride. Before your bike leaves the driveway make sure you have done your T-CLOCS. Gas up at the meeting place and be ready to go at the designated time. 8. On the road motorcyclist should have at least a 2 second cushion in front and behind them. Riding in a staggered formation will allow the group to ride in a tighter formation and allow better vision for the rider. It will also allow the cars and trucks on the road to recognize the bikes as a group.

Page 8 Guidelines to Enjoyable Group Riding cont. 9. At intersections when the bikes come to a stop, tighten the formation to side-by-side to take less space. When the light turns green, or when traffic opens up, the bike on the left proceeds through the intersection first. 10. Remember that bikes share the road with many other vehicles and also it is against the law to block an intersection. 11. When pulling into a gas station allow those in the front of the group to pull up to the gas pumps. Line up behind them. This allows everyone to keep out of the way of the cars coming into and leaving the gas station. 12. When parking, attempt to get the group off of the roadway as quickly as possible. Biting the Bulleit Having visited most of the Distilleries on the Bourbon Trail and a few that are not on the Trail, we remembered that we just happened to miss the ones in Louisville. So one cool June morning we took off to visit the Stitzel-Weller Distillery that currently houses Bulliet Rye Bourbon. Originally opened on Derby Day in 1935 and reopened to the public in 2014, the Stitzel-Weller Distillery has a long tradition in making bourbon. We came home Indiana 66 only to find it closed midway through. The Road Closed in 14 miles is very easy to miss and the Road closure is not mentioned again for another 8 miles. But coming or going, 66 is always a good ride.

Page 9 The Ride to Nisbet Inn Dinner at the Nisbet Inn had quite a few bikes and a car show up. Everyone had a great meal and wonderful company. Region D Rally Information Mike and Theresa Albright Well here goes, 1) We are getting the final touches on the Indiana #28 District race car for the region D rally this July in Portland IN. You will get a spot on the car with your chapter letter or logo" if you send me one " proudly displayed on the car. For the mere cost of $10.00, to do so mail a check to the Indiana District treasurer Send check or money order made payable to: GWRRA District IN To: Deb Caldwell District Treasurer 2909 Tillman Rd Fort Wayne IN Questions call Mike Albright And we'll get you on the winning car along with a photo of the car with your logo or letter proudly displayed "cool isn't it. 2) Also for the rally we would like to see each chapter provide two items for the Silent auction one motorcycle and one non motorcycle, We all love bidding on these goodies, but if no one donates there's nothing to bid on?? So do what you can to support your District and Region and get with your ADD if you can't get to the rally and we will see that you get your chapter's donations to the rally. Have fun and always ride safe, Mike and Theresa Albright Indiana District Directors

Page 16 Indiana Fun Facts The first long-distance auto race in the United States was held May 30, 1911 at the Indianapolis Motor speedway. The winner averaged 75 miles an hour and won 14,000. Today the average speed is over 167 miles an hour and the prize is 1.2 million. Abraham Lincoln moved to Indiana when he was 7 years old. He lived most of his boyhood life in Spencer County with his parents Thomas and Nancy. Explorer Lewis and Clark set out from Fort Vincennes on their exploration of the Northwest Territory. The movie Hard Rain was filmed in Huntingburg. The movie A League of their Own was filmed in Evansville. The first professional baseball game was played in Fort Wayne on May 4, James Dean, a popular movie star of the 1950 s was born in Marion on February 3, He died in an auto crash at the age of 24. David Letterman was born in Indianapolis on April 12, Comedian Red Skelton was born in Vincennes on July 18, Santa Claus, Indiana received over one half million letters at Christmas time each year. True to its motto, Cross Roads of America, Indiana has more miles of interstate per square mile than any other state. The Indiana motto can be traced back to the early 1800 s. In the early years river traffic, especially along the Ohio, was the major means of transportation. Historic Parke County has 32 covered bridges and is the Covered Bridge Capital of the world. Many Mennonite and Amish live in Northeastern Indiana. One of the United States largest Mennonite congregations is located in Bern. According to Amish ordnug (Rules) they are forbidden to drive cars, use electricity, or go to public places of entertainment. IU s greatest swimmer Mark Spitz, won 7 gold medals in the 1972 Olympic games. Before Indianapolis, Corydon was the state s capital from Vincennes was the capital when Indiana was just a territory. In 1862, Richard Gatling, of Indianapolis, invented the rapid-fire machine gun.

Page 17 The Heat Goes On... Heat related illness is just what it sounds like, a medical condition that may occur as a result of exposure to heat. Even very short exposures of high temperatures can cause a heat related illness. These conditions can range from minor illnesses to lifethreatening medical emergencies. Heat related illness happens because the body s normal temperature control system is unable to regulate its internal temperature. At high temperatures the body cools itself by the evaporation of sweat. This cooling system is less effective with air temperatures above 95 degrees and high humidity. Without adequate fluid intake, excessive fluid loss can occur leading to dehydration. Heat Rash: Commonly known as prickly heat, the rash presents itself as itchy bumps on the chest and back. The best treatment for heat rash is prevention. Once you have it, there is not a lot you can do for it except treat the symptoms. If you are going to spend a lot of time in the hot muggy weather, wear light-colored loose clothing. Heat Cramps: Heat cramps usually affect people who sweat significantly during hot humid weather. The sweating depleted the body s supply of salt and also causes the body to become dehydrated. The low salt level in the muscles causes painful cramps. The treatment includes: Stop all activity, and sit in a cool place Drink clear liquids or a sports beverage Do not return to strenuous activity for a few hours AFTER the cramps have quit Seek medical attention if they do not subside in 1 hour Heat Exhaustion: Heat exhaustion is a serious medical emergency. It is caused by excessive loss of water and salt. Those most prone are the elderly, those taking blood pressure medication, and people working in a hot environment. Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms are severe or if the victim has heart problems or high blood pressure. Help the victim get cool also. If symptoms worsen or last longer than one hour, seek medical attention. Symptoms include: Heavy sweating or no sweating Dizziness or fainting Muscle cramps Nausea or vomiting Weakness or tiredness Paleness Headache

Page 19 The District Traveling Plaque remains at Chapter O! On Monday, 13 April 2015, eight members of Chapter O from Evansville, IN traveled to Ft. Wayne, IN to visit Chapter D-2. We left Evansville at 8:00 am CDT with five wings and one car. We traveled 283 miles and arrived at about 5:00 pm EDT at the Pizza Hut on Coventry Ln. where D-2 gathers. D-2 conducted an impressive gathering with members from at least three other chapters and members from the district team in addition to us. We were warmly welcomed, the food was great, and it was great to make new friends. After a series of bogus reasons why we were not going to claim the plaque, Rick Warmels, the D-2 Chapter Director, finally coughed it up. Thank you D-2 for hosting us. We hope we see you all again soon. On Tuesday we saddled up and rode back to Evansville. We traveled about 600 miles round trip. We were lucky on this trip because we managed to ride around all the weather in the area and discovered a few small towns along the way.
