FYI WRCA Bowman s Harness Raffle We are at the halfway point of selling our tickets; I believe that we have sold almost enough tickets to pay for the harness so the rest of the sales will be profit. There are 300 tickets in the hands of our members that we don t know the status of. If you still are holding tickets that you do not think that you can sell before the National Drive you need to turn those tickets in to Ann Petersen, Henry Rish, or Deb Svoboda so that they can be reissued to members to sell. Money and tickets stubs need to be turn in to Ann, Henry, or Deb. Bring the ticket stubs, money and any unwanted tickets to any of our upcoming drives and some will be there to take them. We need the members to go out and sell our tickets. Think 4 H, driving shows, CDE, Breed events and sales. Opportunity to Shop: Maple Crest Farm and Gerard Paagman of Ideal Harness have extended an invitation to all Western Reserve Carriage members and friends to a wine and cheese open house, on Wednesday, August 29 at 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM at Maple
Crest Farms. Gerard has his semi with his line of driving equipment ready for viewing and purchase. If you are able to attend please bring a hors d oeuvre or finger food to share. This is the website for Ideal Harness Gerard has been profiled in the May 2012 issue of the Whip and is also mentioned in the August issue of this year s Whip in an article about a disabled driver. We know how hard it is to find the right driving equipment and here is an opportunity to find the right equipment in our own backyard. Maple Crest to give them an idea of how many are going to take advantage of this opportunity. staceymcf@windstream.net The Cadwell Clinic on August 11th and 12th Bob and Susan Burrows are hosting a Cadwell Clinic at Windy Knoll on August 11th and 12 th Randy and Keady are coming to Windy Knoll this weekend for two days of clinics. They have 11 participants and can handle up to 20. Here is the information about the Clinic from Bob s website. Contact Bob or Susan if interested. Susan Bob Cadwell s are back again to get us tuned up for Indiana and the Kentucky Classic. Ohio Drivers were really visible at these events last year and we would love to see everyone do even better. They re proven techniques will make driving your horse more rewarding, which brings benefits. We hope you will take advantage of this very special opportunity. The format is similar to last year with Dressage and cones on Saturday and Hazards on Sunday. Fees $200 per clinic that includes an hour dressage lesson, a cones session and a hazard discussion and driving session. We
will provide lunch for drivers and grooms both days and there will be a cookout Saturday. Stalls are $25 for the event. All of the above drives are WRCA Drives for further details see our website CAA DRIVERS Proficiency test The following participated in the driving profiency progam. Linda Eick, Meredith Giere, Stacy Giere, Sunny Jones, Carol Milhoan, Susan Burrows, Cathy Rhoades, Kay Rish, Henry Rish, and Mary Thomas. We will be surveying the participants to see how we can improve the offering. Presently we are looking onto providing the opportunity to offer this testing in the spring of We will have a preregistration, so we are guaranteed to have at least 10 people to evaluate, we can evaluate 14 people maximum, more on this later. If you have an interest please Henry Rish. Remember that the CAA is in the middle of a capital drive to purchase a building at the Kentucky Horse Park for a permanent home. They are now leasing the office and the new space is much larger and has access to parking. If you want to make a contribution go to their web site for information, on how to contribute. Even though they are2/3 of the way to their goal of a million dollars they still need
to reach the goal. It seems like an over whelming amount but it was pointed out to me that if each CAA member made a small contribution it would put them over the top. A bit of trivia our club (1973) is the second oldest chapter of CAA trailing New England Region/CAA (1970) and just ahead off Ohio Valley Carriage Club, (1975) Facebook WRCA is now on Facebook thanks to Debbie Svoboda, were are up and running up, take look on our web site at To preview our page. Donations Mary Thomas has received a 50-dollar donation for the WRCA from Clyde Heritage League for a program that her pony Gail put on for them on July 18. Kids and adults learned about Pony s last Thursday at the Clyde Historical Museum for their July family program about transportation titled We Get Around. Mary Thomas brought her eight-year-old Dartmoore pony mare Shepherds Purse Sweet Gale, to the museum Thursday afternoon. The pony was pulling an expertly restored cart built by Walbord and Rikerand Company, Saint Pairs, Ohio What does Dave do? Ever wonder what Dave sends our new members. Here is a copy of the letter he sends to our new members. Along with the letter he sends a Calendar of Events, Directions on how to log on to the web site. Thank you for your interest in the Western Reserve Carriage Association! We are a group of driving enthusiasts and currently have over 110 members. Our main objectives are to promote the sport of pleasure driving, promote/provide carriage driving education and to encourage the use of sound equipment and safe driving practices. To accomplish this, the club sponsors drive, CDEs, clinics and other events related to driving horse-drawn vehicles. Additional information is available on our web site at Annual calendar year membership dues are $25. The membership is a "Family" membership and covers husband and wife and all unmarried children living at the same address. Individual memberships are the same cost. The $25 not only covers membership, but a subscription to the Equine Journal. We use the Journal as a monthly newsletter to review upcoming events,
introduce new members, etc. In addition to the Journal, we publish an annual Membership Booklet and a Calendar of Events booklet, which are mailed in early spring. And s and postcards are used for very last minute changes! Our Membership Application and Release Forms are available on the website. Just fill them out & mail with $25 to the address shown. You can also join at any of our events. Attached below is a list of our 2012 events as of April Please watch the website, s and the Equine Journal for current event announcements and updates. Our pleasure drives are typically on private property, public trails or country roads. Safety is our main concern. We usually have a couple of assigned routes (short & long). We do not line up and drive head to tail. It is more like organized driving at will. And some people just drive a short way out and return. If it is your first time out or if your horse/pony likes to follow, ask and someone will keep an eye on you. Because of insurance requirements, all drivers and passengers must be WRCA members and have a signed Liability Release/Disclaimer on file. However, you can attend an event strictly as a guest (no driving; no riding) to get acquainted. Our meetings and pleasure drives are typically held on Sundays. Combined Driving Events and Arena Trials and other events may be scheduled on Saturdays. For pleasure drives, we meet at 11:30AM with a potluck noon. Bring your own table settings and a dish to share. The club provides coffee, tea, hot chocolate and water. After eating, there is a short business meeting, introduction of new members and guests, an explanation of the drive route/options, and then we hitch & go. We usually eat very well! Turnouts range from minis to draft, singles to four-in-hand and carts to antique carriages. Typically we have 8-15 turnouts at a pleasure drive. There may be a safety inspection. If you need help hitching or need a mentor, ask and someone will surely help! (Some drives are not for green horses. Check in advance.) I would strongly suggest that you attend a drive or event and see what we do! Safe Driving! Dave Antes Membership Secretary, Western Reserve Carriage Association The password for accessing the Members Only section of the club website, is User Name: WRCA (all caps)
Password: drive (no caps) You enter them on this screen when it comes up: USRider: -Promotion for new members. We had three members take advantage of the promotion and USRider donate $10 for every member new to them back to the club in exchange for the club distributing information regarding roadside services for horsemen. Big D s: WRCA is currently set up to receive 5% store credit when members shop there and indicate that they are a WRCA member. This was set up several year s ago but most did not know that the account exists. The club s credits can be used for prizes for drives and auctions. Deb Svoboda will work with Big D s to obtain advertising material for the membership.
