2 P A G E 2 Touring News If anyone is interested in leading tours feel free to contact Alan Levy at any time with the details. As Tour Coordinator for this year my main aim is to have the best possible tour program available to members, in particular increasing the number of tours. I will be happy to receive proposed tours from members at any time, plus I will be chasing people to lead tours. The more tour leaders we have, the greater the variety of tours for members, plus it takes the burden off the usual tour leaders. The Tour Program, containing tour leaders contact details, will be available in the Members Only section of the web site, in the Members version of the Off-Piste newsletter, and also on tour sheets put out at club social meetings where members can put down their names for tours or propose new tours. Between each monthly newsletter, additional tours will be advertised on the web site and/or by separate s to members. Non-members will also have access to the Tour Program (without tour leaders details) in the Tours page on the web site and on the Club Facebook page. The Club Facebook page has been popular for trip reports and photos and is a good way of seeing what the skiing conditions are like throughout the season. New tours proposed on Facebook will not be designated as formal club trips but people are welcome to propose tours here, and should be aware of the Club guidelines below. On the Club web site, the Info / Club Forms page contains the following forms and guidance that should assist tour leaders and participants: Advice for Tour Participants Advice for Tour Leaders Guide to Transport Costs Tour Intention Form Tour Details & Acknowledgement of Risks and Obligations Emergency Procedures Incident Report Medical Information & Emergency Contact Ski Tour Grading If anyone is interested in leading tours feel free to contact myself at any time with the details. 4 P A G E 4 10 Reasons to Ski. Sourced from PRO SKIING 2018 magazine 1 10 Reasons to Ski A Full Body Workout Few or none other endurance sports involve so many muscle groups as cross-country skiing. You get the full body workout. Specifically, you will strengthen muscles such as triceps, abs, back and hamstring. 2 Great Endurance Cross-country skiers are always abundant in lists over athletes with the best endurance in the world. So if you want to improve your VO2 max, this is the activity for you. Perfect conditions on the ski trails near St Moritz, Switzerland 8 Mar 18. Photo: Alan Levy O F F P I S T E
5 P A G E Fantastic Views Not every workout will be the most scenic, but you will get out in nature, and many times you will find beautiful places. Reasons to travel There are eleven Visma Ski Classics events, all taking place at great ski resorts. To enter a race or to sign up for a ski camp is a great excuse for some travelling. New Friends 4 The cross-country community is inclusive. It means that no matter what your level as a skier you will most probably make friends wherever you chose to work out. New Stuff 8 Or at least you can choose to buy equipment for your training. New training gear is a brilliant source for motivation. Better Flexibility 5 Unless you only double pole, crosscountry skiing is like a dynamic stretching for your entire body. Just try some striding and you will understand what we mean. Better Balance 9 You spend lots of time on only one ski while training. This will improve your balance, no matter what your age. 6 The Possibility to Set Inspiring Goals Use your cross-country skiing training as a platform to set goals, like a race, to become stronger, to improve your health or to spend more time outside. It is a great feeling to set up a goal and reach it. 10 Higher Status Good or bad, but to be a cross-country skier is nowadays a status sign in several countries. Many business executives are deep into skiing, so don t underestimate the importance of your own commitment in the tracks.
6 P A G E 6 These weekends are a great opportunity for all members, especially beginners or new members, to learn to ski or develop new skills. CCCSC July Lodge Weekends The club is hosting two July lodge weekends for members. The early July weekend is held in conjunction with the Come and Try cross country ski lessons at Perisher (organised by Snowsports ACT) and is a great weekend for families and beginners. The later weekend is more focussed on touring, but lessons can be arranged subject to demand. These weekends are a great opportunity to learn to ski or develop new skills, go on tours appropriate to your skiing level and meet other members, while staying in comfortable shared accommodation close to the mountains. Families with children are welcome. Both weekends include two nights accommodation in Kalkite. The cost for accommodation for a weekend is $70 single (in shared bunk room) $150 couple (in private room) $200 family (3-5 persons in private room). Please note this fee does not include lessons, ski hire, transport or food costs. Dates: 6-8 July (school holidays) and July Program: Friday Arrive at lodge accommodation in evening. Saturday Come and Try open day lessons and tours, social night dinner back at lodge. Sunday Tours for all levels of skiers led by experienced club members. Numbers are strictly limited. Bookings can be made through the Register Now link or by contacting Jo-Anne Clancy. Ski and Snow Photos Ken Moylan & Gale Funston skiing near St Moritz, Switzerland 8 Mar 18. 10 P A G E 10 Social Club Meetings 2018 (All Welcome) Wednesday 23 May 2018 Skiing in Europe Guest Speaker: Ken Moylan and Alan Levy Ken Moylan and Alan Levy will talk about their trips to Europe earlier this year to ski in the Worldloppet races in Austria, Italy, Germany, Estonia, Czech Republic, Finland, Poland, Switzerland and Norway. Wednesday 13 June 2018 Still Hammered by Hooves Guest Speaker: Dianne (Di) Thompson The Alpine (Vic) and Kosciuszko National Parks continue to be beaten by the impacts of the hooves and eating habits of introduced animals feral horses, deer, pigs, etc. Recently a few National Park Association members, after a five-year gap, revisited the source of the Murray River and Cowombat Flat. Unfortunately these areas have deteriorated further, primarily from feral horses. Similar but different damage on the Tantangara Plain, an occasional skiing and past walking area. What might the point of no return be? What is the cost? Where are the grasslands and our native macropods? Catchments and water quality and quantity. Managed herds where? Why are Namadgi's ecosystems in such good health? Meetings are held at the Hughes Community Centre, Hughes Place, Hughes, Canberra, Canberra on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month from mid May to October. Door opens at 7.30 pm for 7.45 pm start. Light refreshments will be provided.
