10 MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 INTRODUCTION MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 INTRODUCTION 11 COMMENTS FROM KEY SPOKESPEOPLE The Conservatives return to the city is a clear endorsement of the party s confidence in our ability to deliver first-class events. Greater Birmingham is one of our country s economic success stories. It is one of the most enterprising city regions in Europe; its quality of life is attracting skilled workers and renowned employers from all over the UK and abroad. The area is constantly evolving and has transformed itself into a globally recognised business destination for companies across a range of industries. There has also been an impressive 188% increase in foreign direct investment and an 86% increase in jobs over the last five years in the GBSLEP area. This has only been possible because of our strengths, such as connectivity, high quality employment sites and a rich cultural offer. We want to showcase at the Conservative Party Conference the economic renaissance that has been taking place across the city region. Major investments, such as HS2, the extension of the city centre enterprise zone, as well as the move to devolve political powers to the West Midlands Combined Authority, are also an important indication of the level of confidence central government has in us. I believe the city region is in a strong position to continue to grow, further demonstrated by the development of Birmingham Smithfield, the Curzon Investment Plan and Paradise which alone will generate 2 billion worth of investment. The conference offers a fantastic opportunity for us to highlight to the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and members all that Greater Birmingham has to offer. Steve Hollis Deputy Chair of GBSLEP This year s Conservative Party Conference presents a fantastic and timely opportunity for the region to show the Prime Minster, and her ministerial colleagues, the breadth of our ambitions for the region. We hope to impress upon government how through working together, towards deeper devolution, we can make a real difference to the people, businesses and organisations we represent. This is also a chance to build fresh relationships with new ministerial teams and decision makers. It provides us with a platform to help us communicate the importance of ongoing investment in the region s infrastructure, which will guarantee future prosperity moving forward. In the past 18 months the newly-formed West Midlands Combined Authority has worked collaboratively with a range of partners to set out a vision for improving the quality of life for everyone who lives and works in the region. Our Strategic Economic Plan is based on our proud manufacturing history, central location and track record in innovation and articulates how a stronger West Midlands is not just good for local people and businesses, but the whole of the UK. I m confident that the WMCA, with the Midlands Engine and Solihull at its heart, can capitalise on HS2 and ensure the global business assets of the airport, NEC, JLR and Arden Cross create the UK s biggest investment opportunity securing the region s economic wealth in the coming years. Cllr Bob Sleigh Leader of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, Chairman of WMCA It is fitting that the Conservative Party Autumn Conference will be held in Birmingham this year. The West Midlands is the largest economic area outside of London, with the largest population, sitting at the crossroads of Britain. I believe the Midlands can become Britain s engine for growth. We can be at the centre of the government s new industrial strategy, helping to deliver a better, more balanced Britain with strong regional economies. We can also help Britain to make the best of Brexit, offering advice to government and a blueprint for the rest of the country to follow. That is why it is so encouraging to see the government supporting the region and the Midlands Engine which I am honoured to Chair. The Midlands Engine brings together an extraordinary coalition of businesses, universities and political leaders from across the region. Our mission is to harness the untapped potential of the region to leverage economic growth. As part of this vision, I look forward to welcoming delegates and discussing the economic impact the Midlands Engine can bring to the region by delivering the investment, jobs and the growth the country needs. Sir John Peace Chairman of the Midlands Engine, Chairman of Standard Chartered and Burberry plc This conference is a major opportunity to showcase an optimistic and vibrant Birmingham and I look forward to welcoming you to our young and exciting city. Around 12,000 delegates will visit us over the next few days, providing a significant boost of over 19 million to the city economy. But this event is about so much more than visitor numbers. Post-Brexit our cities are more important than ever to the UK economy and we are keen to work closely with ministers to ensure that Birmingham - Europe's youngest city - plays a key part. Now is the time to invest in our cities. In return we will create the growth. We will invest in jobs and skills and we will build much needed homes. So welcome to Birmingham. Enjoy our culture, our bars and restaurants and enjoy our ever-changing but always welcoming city. Cllr John Clancy Leader of Birmingham City Council

12 MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 CONNECTIVITY MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 CONNECTIVITY 13 A CONNECTED REGION Birmingham is ideally placed at the heart of the country, offering exceptional connections to local, national and global networks. The city is at the hub of the UK s road and rail infrastructure its international airport handled 11 million passengers in the last year, with direct flights to cities in Europe, North America and Asia. Rail With three main train stations in the heart of the city centre, getting into Birmingham by train is simple. Birmingham Moor Street, Snow Hill and New Street stations service routes across the country. New Street Station is one of the busiest on the nation s transport network, used by 170,000 passengers a day more than double the number the station was designed for when it was last rebuilt in the 1960s. Passengers have said they want to continue to travel into the heart of the city, and will do so in ever growing numbers. In 2015, a 600 million redevelopment took place, which has ensured New Street can serve passengers to the city and region for years to come. The redevelopment of New Street will deliver the station that passengers deserve and is vital to the continued prosperity of the region. It gives passengers three and a half times more space and has transformed the grey, concrete exterior into a stunning building fit for the 21st century. The project will generate over 2 billion in transport and wider economic benefits. GRAND CENTRAL STATION Air Birmingham Airport sits in the centre of the UK and is the most accessible airport by road and rail, with 20 million people living within the 90 minute catchment. Just 10 minutes to the centre of Birmingham and a little over an hour to London by train, it serves 11 million people a year, travelling with 50 airlines to 140 direct destinations, including daily flights to New York, Delhi, Istanbul, Islamabad, Doha, Dubai, Paris and Frankfurt. Birmingham Airport s total economic impact in the West Midlands in 2014 was around 1.1 billion in Gross Value Added (GVA) and it supported around 25,300 jobs. Across the UK, where more of the Airport s impact is captured, it is estimated to boost the economy by around 1.7 billion in GVA and around 39,850 jobs. The success of Birmingham Airport is largely due to its excellent location at the heart of the country s road and rail network. In fact, it is the most accessible airport in the UK, serving the greatest number of passengers within two hours travel by road and rail. With the arrival of High-Speed Two (HS2) in 2026, Birmingham Airport will be able to serve the greatest number of passengers within a one hour journey and will be the most convenient long-haul airport by road and rail for 19 million people - more than any other long-haul airport. Moreover, Birmingham s one-hour catchment will grow to 15 million and the two hour catchment will increase to 45 million. It was announced in the summer that Birmingham Airport had recorded the busiest year in its 77-year history, seeing 11 million passengers travel through the Midlands global gateway in the last 12 months. This is just a year after breaking the ten million mark in August Comparing the same period between 2014 and 2015, 10.2% more people have travelled through the Airport, due to airlines increasing capacity and launching new services to and from Birmingham. The airport also registered its busiest single day to date on the 19th August 2016 when 44,767 passengers were recorded 14.1% more than the last busiest day achieved on the 13th August Road Birmingham is at the heart of England s motorway network linking the M1, M5, M6, M40 and M42. Overall the transport connections across Birmingham put more than 90% of the UK market within a four hour journey time of the city. Coach The city centre is a nationwide hub for National Express coaches, which offer journeys to Birmingham from 500 locations in Europe and provide access to 1,200 destinations in England, Scotland and Wales via Birmingham. Midland Metro The 127 million Midland Metro development has extended the Midland Metro from its previous terminus at Snow Hill Station into the centre of the city to New Street Station. The new Metro will deliver an estimated 3.5 million passengers from the Black Country and West Birmingham into the heart of Birmingham s shopping district. As well as extending Midland Metro through Birmingham city centre to New Street Gateway, funding has been announced for further extensions to Centenary Square and then on to Five Ways/Hagley Road, to the eastside of Birmingham, linking with HS2 and Digbeth, and an extension to Wolverhampton Railway Station. High Speed Rail High Speed Rail represents one of the UK s greatest regeneration and growth opportunities in a generation. As the largest infrastructure project in Europe, HS2 will become an economic catalyst for the West Midlands and the UK as a whole. It sets a path for closer collaboration with London and other major UK cities, contributing to a sustainable rebalancing of the national economy. The ambitious plans form one of the biggest urban regeneration schemes in Britain, and by far the biggest redevelopment so far announced on the back of HS2. Masterplans for the two terminals based in this region Birmingham Curzon and Interchange at UK Central in Solihull have already outlined the development and investment opportunities HS2 will bring to these specific areas. The regeneration of the Curzon area could deliver 1.3 billion a year to the local economy while UK Central has the potential to create 100,000 jobs. MIDLAND METRO I M DELIGHTED THAT GREATER BIRMINGHAM IS MAKING THIS INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE, WORKING TO MAXIMISE THE POTENTIAL OF HS2 BY INVESTING IN JOBS AND HOUSING AND ENCOURAGING MORE BUSINESS INVESTMENT. IT WAS IN BIRMINGHAM WHERE I OUTLINED MY PLAN TO BUILD AN ECONOMY THAT WORKS FOR ALL, WITH A PROPER INDUSTRIAL STRATEGY THAT DELIVERS PROSPERITY, JOB CREATION AND HIGHER WAGES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, NOT JUST IN LONDON. THAT S WHAT THE CURZON INVESTMENT PLAN AIMS TO DO IN GREATER BIRMINGHAM, AND MY GOVERNMENT IS RIGHT BEHIND THEM. THERESA MAY, PRIME MINISTER

14 MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 CONNECTIVITY MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 CONNECTIVITY 15 A CONNECTED REGION Birmingham Curzon HS2 Birmingham will be at the heart of the UK s high speed rail network, providing a once in a century opportunity to radically enhance the city s national rail connectivity and accelerate its economic growth potential. A brand new city centre HS2 station - Birmingham Curzon - is planned together with the National College for High Speed Rail, while the city is already home to the national HS2 construction headquarters. In September 2016, it was announced that almost 1 billion of investment was being committed to redevelop a part of Birmingham that is set to be transformed by the arrival of HS2 in the city. The Curzon Investment Plan is an ambitious 30 year strategy to unlock and regenerate the 141 hectares of land around the planned HS2 Curzon Street Station, led by the GBSLEP and Birmingham City Council. Creating 36,000 jobs, 4,000 new homes, unlocking 600,000 sq m, of commercial floor space and connecting the eastside of Birmingham to the rest of the city and beyond; the investment is the first major financial commitment by any local area in the country to use HS2 s arrival as a catalyst for regeneration. It also has the potential to add 1.4 billion to the local economy. Plans include the development of Curzon Street Station itself, several new neighbourhoods, offices and retail spaces. The creation of stunning public places such as the Curzon Promenade and Curzon Square which will incorporate the original Curzon Station, a Grade I listed building. UK Central, Solihull Boasting one of the strongest economies outside London, UK Central is one of the most compelling inward investment locations in the UK, offering a powerful combination of opportunity, connectivity and lifestyle. Highlights of the last year include over 60 company expansions and relocations to the area - a quarter of these resulting from Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) - totalling over 40,000 sq m and 3,200 jobs. Core business sector strengths include advanced manufacturing, building technologies, aerospace and ICT, as well as a range of low carbon industries. Home to major brands including Arup, Oracle, Siemens, Fujitsu and Balfour Beatty, recent investments have also seen Changan Automotive acquire a 7,500 sq m worldwide headquarters for its powertrain and R&D divisions at Birmingham Business Park. Recognising the unparalleled investment to date, UK Central represents the area s strong and dynamic economy, as well as future opportunity. The home of the planned High Speed Rail Interchange and large scale development plans, the area s vision encompasses four economic opportunity zones: Zone 1 The Hub, featuring the HS2 Interchange Station, Birmingham Airport, the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham International Station, Birmingham Business Park and Jaguar Land Rover Zone 2 North Solihull Zone 3 Solihull Town Centre Zone 4 Blythe Valley Park and the A34 corridor UK CENTRAL, SOLIHULL The four zones are designed to maximise Solihull s role as a powerhouse of the regional economy. CURZON STREET STATION

16 MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 GROWTH MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 GROWTH 17 GROWTH AGENDA Developing clusters of high-growth sectors is part of Greater Birmingham s strategy for further economic growth, and much of this is outlined in Birmingham City Council s Big City Plan. Within the plan, six strategically important geographic areas have been identified as Economic Zones. Each one provides an exciting and bespoke business offer to accelerate development and support businesses as they start up or move into the city. Birmingham City Centre Enterprise Zone Within the heart of the city, 26 sites make up the City Centre Enterprise Zone (EZ) the most ambitious Enterprise Zone in the UK. Focusing on key sectoral strengths, including professional and financial services, digital media, ICT and the creative industries, the Big City Plan ensures the EZ will drive forward delivery of a truly world-class business and cultural centre building on the strengths of the city centre as an already successful economic engine for the region. Advanced Manufacturing Hub Aston The Hub will provide opportunities for investors in the automotive supply chain, aerospace industry and associated advanced manufacturing activity. It is situated at the centre of the UK motorway network, in close proximity to Jaguar Land Rover. The first manufacturer to commit to Birmingham s Advanced Manufacturing Hub was international hydraulic manufacturing company HydraForce. The 120,000 sq ft (11,150 sq m) factory officially opened in July this year and is the largest single investment the company has ever made, and signals its continued confidence in Birmingham as a European manufacturing and skills hub. Environmental Enterprise District Tyseley To exploit the growth in resource recovery, energy production and low carbon technologies, Tyseley has been designated as the city s Environmental Enterprise District. ITEC Zone Longbridge The ITEC Zone lies at the heart of one of the largest urban regeneration programmes in the country at Longbridge, Birmingham. The Zone has the potential to provide for businesses requiring large floorplate buildings with high spec fittings, set in a town centre location with excellent accessibility. It is particularly suited to companies in the IT sector including Software products, IT services, Business process outsourcing, Cloud computing, Data mining and e-commerce. Food Hub Former IMI Site, Aston The food and drink sector is a significant economic driver within the city and the opportunity exists to form a cluster of food processing, manufacturing and distribution businesses as a Food Hub. With unparalleled motorway links nearby, the site provides the perfect location for this concentration of like-minded businesses. The Food Hub will also afford the opportunity to combine manufacturing, R&D and distribution in a location attractive to companies seeking serviced plots for bespoke development. Life Sciences Campus Selly Oak The Life Sciences campus will become the principal location nationally for key elements of the Life Sciences sector. Located adjacent to two of the city s worldrenowned institutions the University of Birmingham (with the UK s second largest medical school) and the brand new Queen Elizabeth Hospital - it will be a bespoke facility promoting medical technology and healthcare companies, bringing high value jobs into the city. The campus will be configurable to provide a range of solutions for Life Sciences businesses, from wet labs and data houses to manufacturing and support services. The recent opening of the National Institute for Health Research and launch of the new Centre for Translational Inflammation Research illustrates the region s commitment to and investment in this thriving sector. In July 2014, Birmingham City Council approved the expansion of the existing City Centre EZ Investment Plan from 128 million to 275 million. The 275 million Investment Plan, which is an initiative of the GBSLEP, will help accelerate the delivery of new development and infrastructure in the City Centre as well as drive forward LEP priority projects across the Greater Birmingham area. An employment site will promote the creation of new environmental business parks at Tyseley Wharf and Energy Way, fostering environmental technologies symbiosis through work with academic institutions and exploiting green opportunities through the Energy Recovery Facility. BIRMINGHAM CITY CENTRE - ENTERPRISE ZONE

18 MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 GROWTH MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 GROWTH 19 ATTRACTING INVESTMENT The Greater Birmingham region has a successful track record in attracting inward investment, both nationally and internationally. It has helped deliver over 25,319 new and safeguarded jobs in the past five years as well as achieving record levels of capital investment into the city. Reaching out to the world As Birmingham s economic zones and city centre enterprise zone develop, momentum will continue to build amongst investors, developers, supply chains and occupiers. Greater Birmingham enjoys foreign investment boost Despite the pre-eu referendum unease of investors over the last quarter, Greater Birmingham & Solihull attracted 81 new FDI projects and created and safeguarded 5,176 jobs in 2015/16, an increase of 86% from 2011/12. In the wider West Midlands region 11,119 new jobs were created, more than any other region outside London. Investors included global brands such as Americanowned software provider Advanced, Chinese automotive manufacturer Changan and American civil engineering firm Jacobs Engineering. Foreign investment into the area was predominantly driven by the advanced manufacturing sector which represented 31% of all projects. This was closely followed by the IT, creative and digital sector with 23% and by business, professional and financial services (BPFS) at 15%. All three sectors have been heavily targeted as part of the region s strategy to diversify its economy and create the greatest employment opportunities for the local workforce. US firms were the most prominent investors, accounting for 32% of all projects. These include Jacobs Engineering, which expanded its business in Birmingham with a new office on Colmore Square in the city centre s business district in autumn Another leading brand, Advanced, one of the largest UK business software providers, also chose Greater Birmingham as its key location. In part, this was due to the region s status as having one of the UK s best performing digital economies, with more than 6,000 firms, including a range of innovative SMEs, delivering 1.6 billion to the local economy. Incoming firms have cited Greater Birmingham s transport links, affordable space and strong talent pool as major draws. In September, Birmingham City Council leader Cllr John Clancy signed an agreement with Chinese property development company Country Garden worth up to 2 billion to the Birmingham economy. The agreement will see the Guangdong-based company: Explore large scale investment opportunities in Birmingham city region area with particular focus on regeneration and investment options related to the HS2 project. Work jointly to find areas of collaboration with regard to delivering significant new housing stock in Birmingham city and the surrounding area. I HAVE BEEN IMPRESSED WITH BIRMINGHAM S AMBITION AND HUGE POTENTIAL AND I AM DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THIS INVESTMENT COMMITMENT TO SUPPORT SIGNIFICANT HOUSING AND INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT IN THE CITY. WE HAVE A PROVEN TRACK RECORD IN DELIVERING QUALITY HOUSING AT A SCALE TO MATCH BIRMINGHAM S AMBITIONS AND WITH MAJOR PROJECTS COMING TO THE CITY, INCLUDING THE FORTHCOMING HIGH SPEED TWO PROJECT, THESE ARE EXCITING TIMES FOR COUNTRY GARDEN AND BIRMINGHAM. THIS AGREEMENT IS ABOUT BRINGING GOOD JOBS AND QUALITY HOMES TO BIRMINGHAM. COUNTRY GARDEN HAVE A PROVEN TRACK RECORD OF BUILDING HOMES AT PACE AND SCALE. THEY HAVE PLAYED A MAJOR ROLE OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS, AS HOUSEBUILDERS HAVE MET THE MASSIVE DEMANDS OF CHINA S RAPIDLY EXPANDING ECONOMY. IT S ABOUT BRINGING NEW, BIG CAPITAL SPEND TO THE CITY, QUICKLY. THIS IS ABOUT BUILDING HOUSES, JOBS AND FUTURES FOR YOUNG BRUMMIES AND FAMILIES ACROSS THE REGION. COUNTRY GARDEN UNDERSTAND THE DEMANDS IN BIRMINGHAM AND ARE CLEARLY EXCITED AT THE PROSPECT OF INVESTING IN OUR YOUNG, GROWING CITY. A compelling offer By working in collaboration with partners, the GBSLEP presents a compelling investment offer. With significant centres of excellence in areas such as advanced manufacturing, and BPFS, the impetus in niche sectors such as e-commerce and social media are gaining the city national and international plaudits. The city s global reputation is also growing in life sciences and digital media, seeing more investment channels continuing to open up. A major player More than ever, investors are increasingly considering alternatives to London and are being seduced by the West Midlands' rich offer. Excellent links and connectivity aside, it is the combination of a high quality, highly energised workforce and cost efficiencies that are catching the eyes of major players like, HSBC, Deutsche Bank, ASOS and DHL. Regional and Local Growth More than 47 million of the Local Growth Fund has been awarded to projects across the region, which will help to create 32,000 jobs, build 10,000 new homes and unlock 500,000 sq m of commercial floor space. The Local Growth Fund was established by central government to support projects that boost jobs, skills, housing and commercial floor space. The GBSLEP approves funding for projects and oversees the full programme of activity, with Birmingham City Council acting as the accountable body. The funding formed part of GBSLEP s 379 million Growth Deal announced in The GBSLEP was one of the few LEPs in the country to spend its total allocation for 2015/16. CLLR JOHN CLANCY, BIRMINGHAM CITY COUNCIL So far a total of 33 projects have been awarded funds ranging from 210,000 to South and City College for training facilities for trainee electricians, mechanics and engineers, to 3.15 million to support the 15 million Midland Metro Catenary-Free project, which will see Birmingham become the first city in the UK to use cutting-edge battery technology that will remove the need to have attached overhead power lines to historic buildings for trams. Other schemes supported by the Local Growth Fund include the Hoobrook Link Road infrastructure project in Kidderminster with 3.6 million and the purchase of a BAe Jetstream plane for student training and development, as well as facilities refurbishment of Solihull College s Aerospace Academy. Over the next 12 months, a further 49 million has been allocated to support initiatives that bring forward new housing and commercial space developments, as well as boost skills. This includes 9 million to unlock small pockets of land for the development of housing, across the LEP region. In addition, the LEP has also provided 2.4 million for the Friarsgate Development in Lichfield city centre. HOOBROOK LINK ROAD, KIDDERMINSTER

Based in the city centre, Birmingham Smithfield will capitalise on its location next to the prime shopping area which attracts over 40 million visitors a year, spending 2 billion on the local economy and New Street Station, which is used by more than 52 million people a year. Forming a major urban block, 14 hectares in size, the site provides opportunities for over 300,000 sq m of development and over 1,000 new residential units. It will not only create a destination that transforms the city s visitor economy, but also delivers an exemplar of sustainable development. The city s Midland Metro tram system will be integrated into the site and bring Birmingham Smithfield within minutes of the High Speed Rail (HS2) terminus at Curzon nearby. Icknield Port Loop Icknield Port Loop is one of the largest redevelopment sites in Birmingham, presenting a major opportunity for a residential-led mixed use scheme. It occupies a strategically significant location directly to the west of the city centre and has the capacity to deliver 1,200 homes, with a mix of commercial, leisure, education and community uses. Located by Edgbaston Reservoir, the 27 hectare site provides an opportunity to join a distinctive development with canal and reservoir frontages in the heart of the city. Snow Hill Masterplan The Snow Hill Masterplan aims to transform Birmingham s city centre business district and win further investment from global business, professional and financial services firms. The area is home to some of the city s most valuable assets including the Colmore Business District, which supports over 35,000 employees, and Snow Hill rail station, one of Birmingham's main transport links to London. The 20-year Masterplan provides a framework to generate over 200,000 sq m of new office space, build 4,000 residential units and boost the local economy by over 600 million each year. Changes to the district include the transformation of Snow Hill train station, and the creation of a new urban boulevard to improve accessibility to other parts of the city. Arena Central Arena Central is a 9.2-acre development site in Birmingham city centre, being delivered by Arena Central Developments Ltd (ACDL), a joint venture between Miller Developments and Pro Vinci Asset Management. Designed to meet Birmingham s growing demand for high quality office space, the vision for the site is to create a vibrant, class-leading mixed use development all set within a unique and inviting public realm. Situated in Birmingham s City Centre Enterprise Zone, the development benefits from simplified planning and reduced business rates and forms a significant part of the city s vision for regeneration, as laid out in the Big City Plan. Work is already underway on the first phase of the development, which will include the public realm and 2 Arena Central, the building selected by HSBC as the head office of its UK ringfenced bank. Paradise The UK s most important city centre development outside London, Paradise Birmingham is at the heart of the transformation of the cultural and civic centre of the city. Creating a vibrant, office-led development of high quality commercial, civic, retail, leisure and hotel space, the Paradise redevelopment across 17 acres is providing major improvements to pedestrian access across the city and offering greatly enhanced public realm befitting its exemplary historic setting of some of the country s finest Victorian listed buildings. The 500 million Paradise scheme is set to create up to 12,000 jobs on completion and will deliver nearly two million sq ft of space including offices and a 4* hotel. In March, professional services firm PwC confirmed it was the first business to sign up to the transformational Paradise development. Supporting the Paradise vision of becoming the most important commercial development outside London, PwC signed the pre-let agreement to relocate its 1,400-strong Birmingham team from Cornwall Court to 90,000 sq ft on the top four and a half floors of the landmark One Chamberlain Square office building, on a 20-year lease. Designed by renowned award-winning architect Eric Parry, One Chamberlain Square will be a seven storey, premium quality office building with shops and restaurants on the ground floor. It will overlook the refurbished and enhanced Chamberlain Square, surrounded by some of the UK s finest Victorian civic buildings including Town Hall, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery and Council House. PwC will relocate to One Chamberlain Square in early 2019, in line with the conclusion of its existing Cornwall Court lease in Cornwall Street, Birmingham. 12 22 MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 SKILLS MEDIA BRIEFING PACK 2016 SKILLS 23 SKILLS AGENDA Central to Greater Birmingham s vision for employment and skills are three key themes: Ignite, Accelerate and Retune. IGNITE A series of Sector Skills Action Plans have been developed, which set out the skills required to support the LEP s key growth sectors. These have helped to inform practical activity to both meet demand and ignite interest in future opportunities. 1.1 million of the government s Local Growth Fund (LGF) is being used to support the formation of a University Technical College (UTC) in Solihull. The Warwick Manufacturing Group Academy for Young Engineers opened in September Initiatives to encourage better connectivity between local schools and businesses have continued to be promoted by the LEP, including the Solihull Step Up for Success programme, School Forum events run by Chase Chamber of Commerce, the CSR City and the recent partnership with the Careers & Enterprise Company. ACCELERATE The new National College for High Speed Rail in Birmingham and Doncaster is being established to address the skills needs of HS2 and to provide skills development opportunities to the wider rail sector. It will be one of the first cornerstones established to address the skills shortage in the transport and infrastructure sector, ensuring that major infrastructure projects are not delayed, wages are not inflated and economic growth in the UK can continue. In its first five years, the National College for High Speed Rail is expected to train 3,682 learners who will become part of a workforce generating million for the UK economy. For the GBSLEP, which has invested 6 million alongside investment from Birmingham City Council, the college is part of a wider strategy to up-skill local people and delivering economic benefit for the region. This is a game-changing opportunity for thousands of talented young people across the region to access world-leading, cutting-edge rail technology on their doorsteps. Investment has also been made in other skills capital projects, which support our key growth sectors. Skills provision for the advanced manufacturing sector will be supported by funding allocated to Solihull College for an Aviation Engineering Training Centre and South and City College for a Motor Vehicle Training Centre and an Engineering Centre for Manufacturing Support. Another sector benefitting from support is Life Sciences, with a new facility being established by Solihull College with a contribution of 1.5 million from the LGF. RETUNE This year, the GBSLEP has worked closely with work coaches from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), to help local people access local jobs. Funding for 100 additional work coaches was secured from government in the Budget. This focused approach exceeded its targets by securing 13,351 work experience opportunities across Birmingham and Solihull, and supported 11,689 people into employment. The placements are vital in giving unemployed people the confidence and experience needed to secure employment. Due to the success of the initiative, a further 5 million has been announced by the Chancellor to enable the programme to continue for another year. The Birmingham and Solihull Youth Promise Plus is an example of practical activity targeted to supporting young, unemployed people into work. The 50 million plan, developed by a range of partners including Birmingham City Council and Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council on behalf of the GBSLEP and funded by European Social Fund (ESF), is designed to help over 16,000 young people aged years from key target groups who are not engaged in education, employment or training. The project will create integrated and supported pathways for these individuals. Education The Greater Birmingham region is an attractive proposition in terms of schools, further education and universities. Based on A-level results alone, Greater Birmingham has six of the top 26 schools in the country, while 206 schools in the region have achieved outstanding according to national standards body, Ofsted.
