5 Guernsey Guernsey Renewable Energy Team (RET) formed 2008 States of Guernsey/ Commerce and Employment department Renewable Energy Law enacted in 2012 secondary legislation in progress Main area of resources is located in the Big Russel (shared with Sark) The Total Theoretical Resource for Big Russel is estimated to be 656 GWh/y Additional resource identified in the Little Russel and to the west of Guernsey

6 Guernsey Additional resource assessment has been undertaken ADCPs located throughout the Big Russel, in the Little Russel and to the East of Sark Tidal modelling by Universities - Robert Gordon, Exeter, Plymouth, Ecole Polytechnique PLUS Independent Consultants Additional work in key areas is underway to boost understanding Regional environmental assessment published in 2010 Towed camera Survey of Big Russel in 2011 Seabed surveying in 2013/14 Significant offshore wind potential On island monitoring of resource and analysis of results Stakeholder Engagement re public perception on offshore wind

7 Jersey Largest of the Channel Islands and interconnected to France via 2 subsea cables with a third one planned, funded & in the development control process. Been investigating renewables since 2009 within the framework of a low carbon future. The Environment Department is extending its laws to cover marine renewables & is undertaking extensive marine spatial planning to pinpoint the areas most suitable for resource harvesting from an environmental and economic perspective.

8 Jersey Very good offshore wind resources that are commercially attractive and close to planned and consented French wind farm arrays to the SW of the Island. Detailed tidal resource assessment has been carried out between Jersey and Les Ecrehous to the north east of the Island Resource estimated to be in region of 360GWh/yr Work done in 2010 using site surveys, resource and technoeconomic modelling

10 Background to the Commission Alderney small island population ~2000, 1.5MW electricity demand The Commission was established by the Renewable Energy (Alderney) Law 2007 and its related Ordinances The Commission is responsible for licensing and regulating the operation, deployment, use or management of all forms of renewable energy in the island of Alderney and its territorial waters Supported by expert organizations e.g. ABPmer (produced REA) Works with Universities (Southampton, Liverpool and Cranfield)

11 Island Alderney Blocks, within 3nm. Independent estimates of the potential energy range from 1GW to 3GW. Two major energy sites are the Alderney Race and Les Casquets. Alderney Race shares resource with Raz Blanchard (2 French developments in planning)

12 Alderney Renewable Energy Limited (ARE) Background The 2008 contract: signed November 2008 between the States of Alderney and ARE In 2011 block selection and Business Plan developed and submitted 48 blocks selected Relationship with the Commission regarding consent for development of blocks Current activities: FAB Link project interconnector France- Alderney-Britain, for export of energy Joint Venture with DCNS (French Company) for 300MW farm via Race Tidal

13 Alderney Renewable Energy Limited (ARE) France-Alderney- Britain (FAB)Link project: 2000MW Interconnector with tidal exports from Alderney 300MW of tidal fully operational by 2023 Agreements Joint Development Agreement with RTE Project Development Plan with RTE National Grid Connection agreement Studies Economic, Environmental, Engineering, Regulation and Grid Outline cable design confirms up to 1400MW
