2 Welcome to West of Duddon Sands West of Duddon Sands Offshore Wind farm was officially inaugurated in autumn 2014, after completing construction ahead of schedule. It comprises of 108 turbines with a total capacity of 389MW. DONG Energy UK is focused on offshore wind power, oil and gas exploration, and commercial energy sales. We have invested over 5bn in the UK since 2004 and are the world leader in developing and building offshore wind. 4 Innovation - what makes this Project special? The Project benefited from using two of the world s largest and most advanced installation vessels, which allowed work to continue offshore during one of the worst winters in recent history for storm force winds. Working in tandem, the Pacific Orca and the Sea Installer vessels were used to install all of the foundations and the turbine components. The Pacific Orca is the world s largest offshore wind farm installation vessel with a length of 161m, a breadth of 49m and a depth of 10.4m. The Project also used the first custom built offshore wind farm installation harbour in Belfast. How big is it? The area covered is 67 km 2 This is equal to 9,600 Holker Street pitches, home to Barrow a.f.c. 5 Hugh Yendole, Portfolio asset Manager As planned, we completed on time and on budget, and entered full production ahead of schedule. This is a testament to the commitment and professionalism of the development, construction and operations teams. It also reflects the excellent working relationship with our partner, ScottishPower Renewables, and the support we have received from local communities. We successfully applied lessons learned from previous projects, and as we deliver more offshore wind farms, costs will continue to fall and further benefit UK consumers. What has been the impact on the local economy? One of the biggest benefits to the Project has been the new 50m offshore wind farm terminal at Belfast Harbour. The terminal is the first purpose built offshore wind installation and pre-assembly harbour in the UK and Ireland, and supports up to 300 jobs. The size and scale of the harbour allows for continual delivery of turbine components and round-the-clock operations. There are currently 35 people employed by DONG Energy to oversee operations and maintenance. The number of work hours recorded during the two year construction phase equates to over 1,000 full time jobs. Ownership The Project is a 50/50 joint venture between DONG Energy and Scottish Power Renewables. How much electricity does it produce? The Project has a capacity of 389mW This means that each year it provides enough power for over 270,000 homes. 1 How do we maintain the turbines? The operation and maintenance facilities are situated at ABP port in Barrow-in-Furness and include office facilities, a warehouse, a pontoon for service vessels and a helicopter base. 1 We base this on a conservative assumed load factor of 34% (which is lower than our average for 2014) and a household consumption of 4MWh per year.
