6 WHAT WAS THE The German Occupation of the Second World War had the biggest impact on Guernsey during the 20th century. By Mid-June 1940, Germany were storming through Europe invading each country, city by city. The French and English withdrew back to the French Northern Coast in June 1940, which left the Channel Islands exposed. The British Government decided not to defend the Channel Islands, which left Islanders with just hours to decide whether to evacuate to the mainland or remain for an unknown future. Official evacuation boats sailed from 20th rd June. 17,000 of Guernsey s teachers and schoolchildren and mothers and babies were evacuated off island. Alderney recommended all of their Islanders be evacuated and the Dame of Sark Sibyl Hathaway encouraged everyone to stay. 6

7 The Occupation of Guernsey started on 30th June Over the next five years, Islanders had to live under German Rule while Hitler focussed on building the Channel Islands into an Impregnable Fortress. Guernsey, Alderney and Jersey became heavily fortified, with concrete bunkers, anti-aircraft turrets and anti-tank walls and existing fortifications were adapted to become a stronger defence. On the 8th May 1945, there was Victory in Europe over Germany, but the German Commander Admiral Hoffmeier refused to surrender the occupied Channel Islands, until the 9th May. 1,000 German troops remained in the Channel Islands to help clear up the five-year operation, removing land mines and dismantling the large guns, which were dumped at sea. 7

8 AN ISLAND WITH A GREAT STORY TO TELL This is your year to discover the glorious Islands of Guernsey. Our little Island has inspired a big blockbuster-and you could visit the very place where the idea was born. Guernsey was the birth place of the International best seller, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The novel was penned by Mary Ann Shaffer and completed by her niece, Annie Barrows, and tells the Island s story under the German Occupation, through a series of letters. Mary Ann travelled to Guernsey on a whim in 1980 and, when she found herself stranded with fog at Guernsey Airport, she picked up a book about the Island s wartime past and was hooked. Visit places that appear in the book; walk in the steps of the characters themselves with a series of self-guided walks that will make you feel as if you are taking a step through the pages of the book itself. A film based on the book is due for release in Lookout for the Potato Peel Pie symbol in the events section for associated events. 8
