1 EAA CHAPTER 119 FLIGHTLINE EAA Chapter 119, 60 Aviation Way, Watsonville Airport, Watsonville CA September 2008 In May 2008 the Socata Owners Group held a Fly-In to Tempelhof Airport in Berlin, Germany. Madeleine and I flew commercial on Air France to Berlin s main airport Tegel, while many owners from the UK, France, and the Netherlands arrived in their own TB-9 s, TB- 10 s, and TB-20 s. Two German members organized a series of dinners and events, including a behind the scenes tour of Tempelhof. Tempelhof is well within the city limits and easily accessible by subway. It was designed in the 1930 s to handle 6 million people per year during the week, and to be a sports stadium on weekends with seating for 80,000, although the stadium seating was never installed. The airport came under US Army control at the end of World War II, and served a major role in the Berlin Airlift. Some of the hidden rooms were the unfinished vaulted ceiling above the main entrance, an upstairs basketball court and officers club, and the burned out lower level film vault which the Russians opened using explosives, destroying all the film and leaving a fire burning for a month. Tempelhof operates as a General Aviation and commercial airport, but is scheduled to be closed by the end of Berlin Fly-In & ILA-2008 Airshow by John Nogatch Restaurants are plentiful in Berlin, with Wiener Schnitzel, goulash, beer and wine relatively inexpensive. May is Spargelzeit with every menu starting with a page of asparagus dishes. Asparagus in Europe is thick and white, because it is grown with ceramic pots over it, so that it does not turn green. One of our group dinners was at the roof-top restaurant adjacent to the tall glass dome of the Reichstag building. The center of Berlin has many museums, and tickets can be purchased to visit 3 museums in 1 day, which is about all our feet could tolerate. One of the major attractions is the bust of Nefertiri, which is strikingly realistic, and was apparently used as an instructional demonstration for ancient Egyptian artists. Other museums included Art- Deco from the early 20th century, and a large collection of Picasso works. The Charlottenburg castle houses several collections, including the material that Schliemann discovered from ancient Troy (although most of the gold objects are reproductions, because the originals are all in museums in Russia). Many stone facings around Berlin still show bullet holes that were made when the city fell to the Allies. Berlin is extremely flat, built on swampy land, with many rivers and canals. The subways and buses are very convenient, costing $3 for each 2 hours use. The Socata group enjoyed a tour of the Teknik

2 EAA CHAPTER 119, 60 AVIATION WAY, WATSONVILLE AIRPORT PAGE 2 President s Corner Well, everyone is back from a long break and major changes are underfoot. Sara and I are finally, finally, finally, going to retire in Prescott. We have been planning this move for five years and then everything happened all at once. In ten days we sold our house, bought a hanger, and bought a house. When you read this someone else will be living in our Scotts Valley home, so don t go looking for tools I may have borrowed. The movers empty our house August 19 and we start a slow drive to Arizona August 23. Then I ll fly back for my last meeting on September 2, fetch the RV-10 and fly out early September 3. Mike Corder has graciously agreed to fill-in as President for the last three months of our term. He is very capable and I am sure everything will work out. In January our Treasurer and Secretary will be termed out so we need several new souls on the board besides a new President and V.P.. Its a good bunch and the work is shared by many. Its been short but sweet. I have enjoyed the support of the board and the many volunteers that make this chapter and all of its events possible. It s a great chapter with a long history. We should all be proud of what has been built by us and our predecessor. I have accomplished much of what I outlined at the Christmas party December The board and I did open the hanger to builders and outlined an RV- 12 building program in our loft which should start before the end of September. The Day In the Sky and WVI Air Show events were executed smoothly and a great success. How do you plan to top a combined air-show and forest fire in the future? One goal that I have been developing is a mentoring program for selected youths interested in becoming career pilots. As Young Eagles Ramp Boss for 18 months I have been watching a few kids that show up every month and are consistently interested in a pilot career. I have setup covert flights to challenge these kids and the feedback from our pilots have been that they are naturals. The two kids are Jorge and Naomi. Jorge is 13 so we need to wait a few years but Naomi is 17 and ready to go. Naomi has the resources to become a private pilot and I have guided her to United Flight for instruction. Bob Ross is providing a good discount for each student we send to him for instruction. We need to invite Naomi into our meetings so that everyone can learn more about her. Larry Baker has agreed to be her mentor and has contact information. Stay tuned for another late August with the meeting remainder and a list of surplus parts & equipment. I will open my hanger on September 2 at 6:30PM for a garage sale. Max price is one beer but that is negotiable. Thanks to the board for letting me try new ideas and thanks to the members for all your support. It has been a great 9 months and I am very happy to have been your President. (And, would volunteer again). Onward and Upward, Bill DeRouchey SPOT currently have a special promotion for EAA members where you get the first year of service for free, this is effectively like giving you the unit for free. If you have not heard about SPOT you can read about it here: ExploreSPOT/SPOTMessenger.aspx Essentially SPOT is a personal GPS unit you carry with you which is satellite based and its does a few things: sends a periodic signal which results in your location (using google maps) appearing on a personalized web page, this page is shareable with friends and family so they can see where you are. It also allow you to send a text message or by pressing a button, the message is canned so its just a way of saying I m ok. It also has a 911 button which alerts emergency services and they get your exact GPS coordinates. Call SPOT at (they re in Fremont) and say you are an EAA member and want to take advantage of the promotion. I just did and the lady who took my order didn t even ask for my EAA number :-) Fly safe, Patrick McCormack

3 PAGE 3 Chapter News EAA Chapter Minutes JULY 1, 2008 The meeting was called to order by V/P Mike Corder at Jeff Roper gave a report on Dan White s accident. There will be a pot luck dinner instead of the August meeting. It is to be on the 5th of Aug, at the Tom Hoyt Park at the airport at There is to be a service for Dan at the Twin Lakes Church on 7/10/2008. The time is Members are encouraged to sign up for our Flight Line e-newsletter. It saves the chapter significant expenses of mailing the newsletter. Contact Brian Moffet or Neil Brooks. 4. Treasurer, Mary Doherty: a. Mary washed the flags that hang in the WAEC. b. The Ultra Light chapter from South Count Airport is having a Pancake Breakfast at the Hollister Airport. (To be held at the Weatherly Hangar) 5. Jack Roberts suggested that we consider naming the WAEC after Dan White. Dan was a teacher there for two years. To be considered by the Board of Directors. 6. Said Karssli, the owner of Little Tampico Restaurant, donated the food for tonight s meeting. Much appreciated. 7. John Davi, Hangar Boss: gave a report on the upgrading of the mezzanine. To be finished before school resumes. Major work to start on 7/9/08. Bob Frisbey in charge. 8. Don French, WVI Manager: gave a report on activities at WVI a. A new GPS instrument approach procedure will be approved, hopefully on 11/8/08. b. There is a question whether the NDB Radio should be dismantled. Anyone wishing to comment, pro or con, should contact John Randolph, the chapter s representative on the Airport Advisory Committee. c. WVI is switching fuel supplier from Chevron to Air BP. Those using an Air BP credit card will get a discount. A letter to all tenants will be forth coming. Air BP will be donating $50,000 over a period of 5 years. d. There is a submission letter to the FAA regarding the runway 20 extension and the ILS. EAA CHAPTER 119, 60 AVIATION WAY, WATSONVILLE AIRPORT e. The plan is for an addition of 100 hangars to be built in 2 1/2 to 3 years. They will be built on North of RWY 8/26 and East of RWY 2/20. Some will be bigger box hangars. f. The helicopter operation was discussed. The operators are very cooperative. g. The city of Watsonville plans on appealing the Buena Vista ruling. h. The airport electrical bill is $12,000/month. We as users have to try and help reduce those costs. We all pay for it with our rental fees. i. The management is very discouraged that people are bringing trash from home to deposit in the Airport dumpster. The penalty for doing so could be losing your airport privileges. 9. Young Eagles, Bob Sliter: We flew 51 kids in June. The chapter received a $300 donation from an anonymous source to be used with the YE Program. Bob has converted to digital photography with the money. Polaroid film is no longer available. He purchased two digital cameras and a printer. We need a newer donated computer that is USB 2.0 compatible. Next Young Eagles Day is 7/5/08. A discussion of fuel prices and the cost to the volunteer pilot followed. Feedback to Bob is requested. Perhaps a shorter flight could be considered. Please your comments to Bob. Don French announced that the airport would give a discount of $1.00/gal to the volunteer pilots. Several pilots said they considered the flights as flights to maintain proficiency. All expenses are tax deductible to the pilot. One can fly a Young Eagle any day of the year. Be sure to turn in the paperwork to Bob. We have a group of regular volunteers who help the ground operation. They are members and some are non-members. The list follows: Alex Solano- Non member, Kendra Pugmire-member, Juan Carlos Fonseca- non member, Penny - non- member. Due to the late hour the meeting was adjourned. At the next regular meeting, Scott Randolph will present the program. Submitted by Neil Brooks, Sec. Chapter 119 Membership Flightline is published monthly and sent to all Chapter 119 members either by or in hard copy. Membership in Chapter 119 is $15 per calendar year. Checks payable to EAA 119. Mail to: 60 Aviation Way, Watsonville, CA 95076

4 EAA CHAPTER 119, 60 AVIATON WAY, WATSONVILLE AIRPORT PAGE 4 Vice-President s Corner As you may be aware the FAA has a big campaign on right now to drastically reduce runway incursions. If you intrude on any runway without permission, you will be violated. The controller has no discretion in this matter, if they don t write you up, then they are in trouble. This seems like a good idea if perhaps a bit draconian. But what is not completely obvious in this situation is what constitutes a runway. If you are on a taxiway leading to a runway, you will come to the hold short lines (dashed line then a solid line). It is important to realize that anything beyond these lines is considered to be the runway. If you stick your nose one inch over the lines, the FAA considers that you are on the runway. The inverse is also true. Coming home from OSH, I landed at Redmond to refuel. After landing, I was told to contact ground once I was off the active. I did this and the first thing the ground controller asked me to do was taxi over the hold short lines. Since I had not done this, I was technically still on the active runway and they couldn t clear anyone to land until I was off the runway. While at Oshkosh, I attended a talk by Rod Machado and he had a couple of interesting comments on this situation. In the first case, a pilot taxied up but held short of the lines. The controller then decided to shift him to another runway which required a 180 degree turn in place. The pilot realized that this might create a problem as possibly his nose and for sure his right wing would swing over the hold short lines. After a bit of negotiation, he got permission for his nose and right wing to enter the active runway! Rod s second comment concerned clearances to taxi to an active runway. For example, if WVI had a tower, ground might give you a clearance to taxi to runway 20. Implicit in this clearance is permission to cross runway He said he will no longer taxi across any runway without getting the tower to specifically clear him across the runway in question. Procedure he uses (and I tried it on the way home) is to just taxi along and before you get to the runway, contact ground. In most cases, you won t even have to slow down but you might have preserved your ticket. 5 PAGE 5 Museum, which has the airplanes on the upper floors, because the heavy steamship engines of the Maritime Museum occupy the ground floor. Germany was thoroughly stripped of working airplanes and parts at the end of WWII, so the museum has searched unusual places for old airplanes, such as old barns and lake beds. Many of the metal airplanes are reconstructions that started from wrecks. The fuselage of an early airliner had been functioning as a car port for many years. The collection included V-2 rocket engines, a very nice looking 2-seater from the 1950 s, and an early model of Horton s flying wing glider. I noted that early pilots licenses from the 1920 s included pictures, and looked much nicer than our modern licenses. The Socata fly-in wound up with a visit to the big ILA-2008 Airshow which was held on the grounds of the new Schoenefeld Airport, which will eventually replace Tegel as Berlin s main airport. There were exhibitions by various European military agencies, along with some commercial and General Aviation airplanes. After flying some maneuvers, the Indian Air Force helicopters came too close to a small composite amphibian that was next to perform, and blew it over. Madeleine handed out expired US charts to passers-by, but Germans are very stand-offish and were reluctant to accept them. One young man gradually warmed up to us and discussed the glider project on display, which he had worked on. Several GA flight schools were represented, and a number of homebuilts were on display.
