Dibbert '70 President The University of North Carolina General Alumni Association John McGowan is Director of Graduate Studies (Comparative Literature) and professor of English, teaching 19th century British Literature. He is a founding and active member of UNC's Program in Cultural Studies and is the former Director of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities and Ruel C. Tyson Distinguished Term Professor. McGowan has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards since coming to UNC in His work aspires to follow in the footsteps of John Ruskin, William James, John Dewey, Kenneth Burke, and Hannah Arendt, all figures who are not quite philosophers, political theorists, or cultural critics, but some mixture of the three. Mc- Gowan's Democracy's Children: Intellectuals and the Rise of Cultural Politics (Cornell UP, 2002) collects essays on the shifting roles of the intellectual and of the university in our time. In response to the shifts in American politics over the past thirty years, American Liberalism: An Interpretation for Our Time (UNC Press, 2007) tries to articulate a liberal vision drawn from Madison and Dewey that can animate a contemporary American politics. Discover the majesty of Stirling Castle. Throughout history, this castle has witnessed fierce battles and endured at least 16 sieges. Explore the castle, its gardens, the Great Hall and Chapel Royal. See the National Wallace Monument, built to honor freedom fighter William Wallace, famous for leading the resistance during the Scottish Wars of Independence. Visit the site of the Battle of Bannockburn where Robert the Bruce defeated the English to gain Scottish independence in Independent Exploration: Spend some time exploring on your own. Local Flavor: Enjoy dinner at a Stirling restaurant that features locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. DAY FOUR B L LUSS THE TROSSACHS Excursion: Loch Lomond, the Trossachs and the Pathways of Rob Roy McGregor. Journey to the town of Luss on the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Continue through Aberfoyle and Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, which stretches from Loch Lomond into the heart of the Trossachs. Climb aboard the steamship Sir Walter Scott for a cruise on Loch Katrine, made famous in Scott s narrative poem, Lady of the Lake. Local Flavor: Stop for lunch at a lakeside restaurant. DAY FIVE National Wallace Monument UNESCO The Old and New Towns of Edinburgh, the Forth Bridge and the Frontier of the Roman Empire at Hadrian s Wall are UNESCO World Heritage sites featured in this program. EDINBURGH Excursion: Edinburgh. One of Europe s most distinguished capitals, Edinburgh fostered the 18th-century Scottish Enlightenment. Famous for its architecture, this world-class city has splendid medieval structures in historic Old Town and Georgian buildings in the New Town. Journey along the Royal Mile in Old Town. Visit Edinburgh Castle and High Street. See the Forth Bridge, which spans the Firth of Forth. Enjoy lunch at leisure in Edinburgh. Educational Focus: Meet the People. Learn about daily life in Scotland during a discussion with residents of Stirling. DAY SIX B B D STIRLING Educational Focus: Scotland Today. Discuss current Scottish politics and events. Independent Exploration: The rest of the day is at leisure. Dinner is served at the hotel. DAY SEVEN B L D SOUTH TYNE VALLEY, ENGLAND VINDOLANDA BOWNESS-ON- WINDERMERE Excursion: The Scottish Borders, Roman England and Hadrian s Wall. Enjoy a scenic drive from Scotland to England,

5 Castlerigg Stone Circle Bowness-on-Windermere and pass through The Scottish Borders, the southernmost region of Scotland. Visit the Roman Army Museum and ruins of a Roman fort of Vindolanda. Spend some time walking along Hadrian s Wall, the barrier built to keep the northern barbarians from invading the southern part of the island. Enter the county of Cumbria for an introduction to the English Lake District. Local Flavor: Enjoy lunch near Hadrian s Wall. Upon arrival in Bowness-on-Windermere, check in to the Macdonald Old England Hotel & Spa. DAY EIGHT B L ENGLISH LAKE DISTRICT Educational Focus: The English Lake District. Learn about the history of this beautiful region of northern England. Excursion: Literature and the Lakes. Depart for Rydal Mount, William Wordsworth s family home. Stroll through his 4-acre garden, originally designed by Wordsworth himself. Enjoy a private poetry reading before continuing to picture-perfect Tarn Hows. Next, visit the medieval village of Hawkshead, where Wordsworth studied at the 15th-century grammar school. Continue to the village of Coniston, home of writer Arthur Ransome. Visit Brantwood, home of Victorian writer John Ruskin. Visit Hilltop Farm, a site of thick woods and three lakes that once belonged to Peter Rabbit author Beatrix Potter. Rydal Mount Local Flavor: Enjoy lunch in Brantwood. Return to the hotel on the motor coach or take the ferry across the lake and walk to the hotel. DAY NINE B D ENGLISH LAKE DISTRICT Educational Focus: Architecture of the English Lake District. Learn about the architectural styles found in this region. Excursion: Lake Cruise and the Northern Lakes. Spend the day exploring the Lake District. Begin your excursion on the shimmering waters of Lake Windermere aboard an iron passenger boat. Then enjoy a scenic drive past Rydal, Grasmere and Thirlmere en route to Keswick. See the Ashness Bridge and Surprise View for a panoramic view over Skiddaw. Visit Castlerigg Stone Circle, a monolithic monument built 4,000 years ago. Continue to Grasmere Village to visit the cemetery where William Wordsworth is buried before stopping for afternoon tea and a taste of the famous local gingerbread at the Wordsworth Hotel. Independent Exploration: Enjoy some time at leisure in Keswick.

6 DAY TEN Lake District National Park, England B L WESTERN LAKE DISTRICT Excursion: High Adventure. The Lake District is home to winding Wrynose and Hardknott passes, the latter being the steepest road in England. Journey through these passes, and stop at the ruins of Hardknott Roman Fort, built in the second century. Local Flavor: Stop at a traditional country inn for lunch. Excursion: Wastwater and Muncaster Castle. Admire the view of Wastwater, England s deepest lake. Continue to Muncaster Castle, built on the foundations of a first-century Roman structure, for a tour of this historic, and reputedly haunted, home. DAY ELEVEN B D BOWNESS-ON-WINDERMERE Independent Exploration: Spend the day at leisure enjoying this beautiful region. Tonight, celebrate your adventure with a Graduation Ceremony, followed by a Farewell Reception and Dinner. DAY TWELVE Transfer to Manchester Airport for the return flight to your gateway city. There is a spa, fitness center, an indoor swimming pool and a squash court. Dine on traditional and international gourmet cuisine at Scholars Restaurant. Wi-Fi is available. Literature and the Lake District A national park since 1951, England s Lake District in Cumbria is a sprawling expanse of cool, clear lakes, flower-filled meadows, ancient woodlands, jagged mountains, uplands and fells. It is home to more than 800 square miles of abundant wildlife and charming villages. Some land is privately owned, but landowners and park officials work closely to ensure that 1,800 miles of footpaths are open to all visitors. The Lake District s beguiling scenery is noted for inspiring the British Romantic poets at the turn of the 19th century. William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Southey came to be known as the Lake Poets for their body of work describing the idyllic surroundings. Other greats also interpreted the scenery into art, including Beatrix Potter, author of the childhood classic The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Potter roamed the landscape as a child and illustrated the region s insects, pets and fossils. In her later years, she was devoted to conserving the natural resources of the region.
