1 TideFest Sunday, 11 September 2016 Chiswick, Kew, Brentford, Barnes, Richmond & Kingston TideFest is an annual event to celebrate the recreational importance of the Thames Tideway to Londoners. Come along and enjoy the river! Programme
2 Activities at Chiswick, Kew and Brentford Paddleboarding Stand Up Paddleboarding specialists Active 360 will be running pre-booked 50 minute supervised sessions at Kew Bridge for those new to paddleboarding, (all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult). There will also be a mass paddle from Kew to Putney and back to help environmental charity Watertrek UK to protect waterways around London from plastic pollution. Participants to make 30 donation (which also covers use of all equipment or just 10 if bringing own boards). See website for more details. Venue: Brentford Boating Arch, Kew Bridge. W4 3NG Times: 11am 4pm taster sessions pm Charity Paddle Booking: Cost: Taster Sessions 10 per person ( 5 for under 25s) Contact: Sailing with Strand on the Green Sailing Club Come and watch the local experts sail the Thames Tideway. Strand on the Green Sailing Club was established on 4 April 1946 when 22 people met in the Club Room of the Bell and Crown pub in Chiswick and unanimously resolved to form a sailing club. The club holds regular events and competitions and will be out on the water on the day of Tidefest. Times: 3.30pm. Spectators welcome Kayak sessions Kayak Taster Sessions Try free Kayak Taster Sessions with Edge Paddling at Kew Bridge Boating Arch. Newcomers can simply turn up and try kayaking on the Thames with qualified coaches. Must be 12 years or over. A free prize draw is included, with three free club memberships worth 96 on offer. Venue: Brentford Boating Arch, Kew Bridge. W4 3NG Times: 12 6pm Booking: Just turn up Cost: Free Contact: enquiries@edgepaddling.com Angling Competition Angling Trust The prestigious Thames Tideway Angling Championship takes place at Strand on the Green and Barnes foreshores. 40 top anglers from across the UK will be taking part and spectators are welcome. All fish are returned to the river unharmed after the weigh in. Venue: Strand on the Green and Barnes Foreshores Times: Fishing 11am 4pm. Weigh in 4 5pm
3 Community Activities and Stalls at Strand on the Green A whole range of free, family-friendly activities and displays will be available at the Strandon-the-Green. Marquees on the riverside embankment will host displays on the Thames Tideway Tunnel, children s activities and games, stalls run by river and environmental groups and the Port of London Authority s Riverside Code safety game. The London Wildlife Trust will be there to talk about the capital s wildlife and to sign up Dragonfly Detectives as part of an exciting new project to survey the capital s rivers and ponds. There will be a charity stall run by WaterAid as well as live music, ice creams, refreshments and lots of information to take away. Times: 10am 5pm Paint The River at the Artist s Tent Come and help paint a picture of the river during Tidefest and let s see how long we can make it! We may not beat any world records (the longest picture ever painted was 10,850m) but we will give it a go. Local artist Steph Curtis-Raleigh will be on hand with paints, crayons and inspirational ideas. Children (and adults) are welcome to add their contribution and their names to the work. Photos of the river painting will be posted on Facebook throughout the day. Times: 10am to 5pm Thames Water Marquee Thames Water are organising some fun, interactive, craft activities to help you learn about the biodiversity of the river and why we need to protect it. They will be handing out freebies to help you to save water, energy and money, along with an opportunity to take part in the Network Challenge where you get to design your own water system. Times: 10am 5pm Foreshore Activities at Strand on the Green On the Foreshore at Strand-on-the-Green there will be children s activities including river dipping, water testing and games designed to explain and increase understanding of what s going on in the river run by the environmental charity Thames21. Alongside this will be seine netting supervised by ZSL and the Institute of Fisheries management to show you what lives in the Thames. The Environment Agency will have a fish tank displaying live fish from the river. Times: River Dipping from 11am. Seine netting 2 4pm Cost: Free to all but bring your wellies Strand on the Green
4 Foreshore activities MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) Time Truck The new MOLA Time Truck will be parked up next to Kew Bridge and hosting a rolling drop in demonstration of the Thames Water sponsored Cleaning up History education programme. This innovative activity includes hands on education around London s sewers combined with the thrill of archaeological discovery. There will also be an opportunity to learn more about the Time Truck, MOLA s ambitious outreach plans, and Thames Water s education programme. Venue: Kew Road (west of Kew bridge) W4 3NG Times: 10am 5pm Booking: Just turn up Cost: Free Contact: Archaeological Walks and visits to Lots Ait and Oliver s Island A series of highly informative archaeological walks and tours of Oliver s Island at Strand on the Green and the nearby historic Lots Ait boatyard at Brentford have been organized for this year s TideFest. 1. Oliver s Island Come on a visit to this special place on the Thames Oliver s Island at Strand on the Green. Come and hear about the long history of this island and its current environmental importance Thanks to the PLA we are able to ferry visitors by small boat to this intriguing place for archaeologist-led tours led by Dr Fiona Haughey and Mike Webber. Please wear sensible footgear and life jackets will be provided. Venue: Strand on the Green Sailing Club, under Kew Rail Bridge (between City Barge and Bull s Head pubs) Times: 11am, 11.15am, 11.30am, 12.00pm, 12.15pm, 12.30pm. (6 groups of 5 people) Cost: 5 per person - - over 16s only. 2. Lots Ait Boatyard Tour Come and discover Brentford s best kept secret and learn about the importance of this small island on the Thames. Lots Ait is home to John s Boat Works, the Two-Lipped Door Snail and a thriving community of boat dwellers. It was also a key location for the film The African Queen. Meet John and a former apprentice from the original boat yard and hear about Lots Ait s amazing boat building history. View the exhibition and learn about its historic past and discover with archaeologist Greer Dewdney. Venue: Meet at Goat Wharf (by the gate on 10mins beforehand) adjacent to 41 High Street, Brentford, TW8 0BB Times: 2.30pm, 3.15pm, 4pm 3 groups of 15 Cost: 3 per person - Suitable for accompanied children over 12 yrs.

Strand-on-the-Green foreshore walk Come and explore the Thames foreshore at Strand-on-the-Green with archaeologists Dr. Fiona Haughey and Mike Webber where you can find evidence of the ancient past right up to the recent present underneath your feet! Uncovered twice a day, the dynamic inter-tidal zone reveals its secrets so come and look for this treasure before it erodes away. Please come with sensible footwear. Venue: Meet outside the Bull s Head pub, Strand on the Green. Time: 3pm Cost: 3 per person - Suitable for accompanied children over 5 yrs. TideFest Discounts at London Museum of Water & Steam London Museum of Water & Steam is home to magnificent collection of steam pumping engines and tells the history of London s water supply. This great little museum by Kew Bridge is offering a special TideFest package where all kids under 15 get in free of charge and adults receive a special 8.00 rate, instead of 11.50, by quoting Tidefest or presenting a Tidefest programme. The discount is valid on the day or afterwards with a programme. 6 Windrush Cruise Take a boat trip along the Thames. The River Thames Society is organising four hour-long boat trips around the Thames Tideway islands, leaving from Kew Pier on the historic Thames launch the Windrush. Your skipper will be Ken Dwan, a former Royal Waterman and Queen s Bargemaster. Guided commentary is included. (Advance booking is essential as these trips sell out quickly) Venue: Kew Pier on the Richmond Bank by Kew Bridge. TW9 3AT Times: Trips leave at 11.00am, 12.15pm, 1.30pm and 2.45pm Cost: 10 per person Chiswick Pier Heritage Trail Join the Chiswick Pier Trust and take a scenic and historic walk along the Thames Path, from Chiswick to Hammersmith Find out more about the history of some of the buildings along this part of the Thames, and take a new look at the river and its heritage. The walk will start at Chiswick Pier on the Corney Reach Estate and finish at William Morris House near Furnivall Gardens, Hammersmith. Please wear sensible footwear. Most suitable for adults, but open to all ages. Venue: Meet by the fish tank (immediately on your right as your enter) Pier House, Corney Reach Way, Chiswick, W4 2UG. 7 Activities at Kingston and Richmond Hogsmill Nature Reserve Community Day Surbiton Lagoon A great day out for all the family at Thames Water s Hogsmill Nature Reserve at Kingston. This is a special opportunity to visit a nature reserve that is normally closed to the public. There will be opportunities to try bird watching with local experts, bird house building, pond dipping, honey tasting with the Kingston Bee Keeping Association, craft activities making clothes pin dragonfly fridge magnets and bottle fish along with wildlife face painting. There will be bird and mammal identification games with prizes and light refreshments will be available.
