2 MAYOR S corner From green spaces and arts-infused places, to Rocky Point Pier and locally-brewed beer, Port Moody offers urban appeal with a friendly, smalltown feel. If you ve lived here for years, you know what I m talking about. If you re new in town, you ll soon find out just how amazing this place really is. We re in for another busy summer around the City, with a great line-up of exciting events, which include: RibFest, Car-Free Day, Summer Sunday Concerts, Firefighters Pancake Breakfast, Mayor s Summertime Celebration and, of course, Golden Spike Days and Canada Day. You can check out all these events and others in our new Guide to Summer, which is available on the City website (portmoody.ca/summerguide). City Council and civic committee meetings aren t held in August, but there will still be plenty of activity in the City over the summer months. Following the successful implementation of the RS1-S small lot zoning, the new zoning bylaw will be adopted, with major updates to the now 30-year-old existing bylaw, including laneway housing. Summer is the time for utility and roadwork: major projects will include Gatensbury Road improvements, paving in College Park, the extension of the Murray Street Bike Path, and the final bridge replacement on the Shoreline Trail. Watch for notices of construction as these and other capital projects will impact roads and trail access. We continue with the repair and renovation projects at all City facilities, and early works will begin for implementation of the Master Transportation Plan. We re also moving forward with plans for the Moody Centre Transit-Oriented Development Area. Most of all have a great summer. Get out and enjoy a hike, bike, run, or paddle, or drop in to the Arts Centre, Museum or Library and take in some culture. Pay a visit to some of our amazing local shops and dine in one of our fantastic eateries. There are so many great ways to spend a day in Port Moody. We are so lucky to have this beautiful place to call home. Mayor Mike Clay Rocky Point Park is one popular place in Port Moody during the summer! 4 Applying nematodes to combat Chafer Beetle? If you are applying nematodes tiny worms that live in soil to help combat Chafer Beetle infestation, you may be eligible for a temporary exemption from current lawn watering regulations. The City of Port Moody will grant one temporary exemption free of charge for residents applying nematodes. Permits are only issued under Stage 1 and 2 watering restrictions, and to residents who can show proof of nematode purchase. Please bring proof of nematode purchase to the second floor counter at City Hall (100 Newport Drive), where you will be asked to fill out a lawn watering permit application form. You must apply in person, and the permit is only valid for 21 days. Even with a permit, applicants may only water their lawns between 4am and 9am, Monday to Sunday. Fast facts on Nematodes and Chafer Beetles The European Chafer Beetle is an invasive insect pest. Its larvae feed on the roots of grasses, causing serious damage to lawns. Nematodes can kill Chafer Beetle grubs without harming plants, people, or pets. Please visit portmoody.ca/chaferbeetle for more information about Chafer Beetle infestation and how to maintain a healthy lawn. Lawn watering regulations in effect We use more water in the summer and early fall, when the weather is drier and we head outside to care for our lawns and wash our decks or driveways. Region-wide watering regulations, set by Metro Vancouver, are an effective way to help us use our drinking water wisely. Visit metrovancouver.org to learn more. Watering regulations are in effect until October 15, Stage 1 Residential Lawn Watering Even-numbered addresses Odd-numbered addresses Wednesday and Saturday mornings, 4am 9am Thursday and Sunday mornings, 4am 9am Stage 1 Non-Residential Lawn Watering Regulations Even-numbered addresses Odd-numbered addresses Monday mornings 1 6am and Friday mornings 4 9am Tuesday mornings 1 6am and Friday mornings 4 9am Watering trees, shrubs, and flowers is permitted any day, from 1am to 9am, if using a sprinkler, or any time if hand watering or using drip irrigation. All hoses must have an automatic shut-off device SUMMER
5 Roadwork Ahead Drier weather over the summer months means construction crews will be out working on a variety of City projects. Please help us keep construction workers and road users safe by slowing down and following traffic control instructions when you encounter roadwork in progress. If possible, avoid a construction area by taking an alternative route. Angela Drive and Cecile Drive Paving Target start date: July 2018 Partial and full lane closures will be required. Local traffic will continue to have access during construction. Gatensbury Road Improvement Project Target start date: August 2018 During construction, Gatensbury Road will be fully closed, with local access only. Shoreline Trail Pedestrian Bridge Rehabilitation Target start date: August 2018 A section of the trail will be fully closed to allow for replacement of a bridge. Newport Drive Sanitary Sewer Repair Target start date: September 2018 Partial lane closures will be required at the front entrance of the Civic Centre (100 Newport Drive). City Hall and the Port Moody Public Library will remain open during construction. Murray Street Bike Path Extension Target start date: September 2018 Construction is expected to affect access to parking along Murray Street and access to parking at Rocky Point Park. + TELUS trucks in your area. Over the summer, you might see more TELUS trucks in your neighbourhood than usual, and a TELUS representative may visit you to request permission to connect your home or business to their new network. That s because TELUS is building communications infrastructure that will bring options for faster and more reliable internet access to Port Moody residents and businesses. For more information, visit telus.com/portmoody. Hop on the Shoreline Shuttle it s free to ride The Shoreline Shuttle has arrived! On June 1, 2018, the City of Port Moody launched a new, summer-time shuttle bus service that connects Inlet Centre, Rocky Point Park, and Moody Centre. Residents and visitors will be able to catch the free Shoreline Shuttle on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until September 3, The bus travels in a one-way loop, leaving Rocky Point Park approximately every 30 minutes during operating hours: 4pm to midnight on Fridays; 1pm to midnight on Saturdays; and 1pm to 10pm on Sundays. The service schedule will be adjusted for holidays (Canada Day, B.C. Day, Labour Day), and select special events (Golden Spike Days Festival, RibFest, Car-Free Day). The Shoreline Shuttle can carry a maximum of 20 passengers, or 16 plus two passengers in wheelchairs. View the route map and schedule at portmoody.ca/shuttle. 6 Stay safe on the roads and on the water this summer Now that summer is here, there are more cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians on our roads and sidewalks. Port Moody Police are reminding everyone to stay alert and aware, and respect all users of the road, regardless of their mode of transportation. Please visit icbc.com for information on how to share the road safely. Stay off the mudflats at Burrard Inlet At low tide, it may seem like a fun idea to walk across the mudflats in the Port Moody Arm of Burrard Inlet. But it s not fun, it s dangerous. Port Moody Fire-Rescue and Port Moody Police are reminding residents and visitors to stay off the mudflats because they are dangerous and unpredictable. While they may seem firm, they can give way suddenly, and can act like quicksand in some areas. People and animals can sink, get stuck, and be unable to get out before the tide comes in. If you are walking the Shoreline Trail, or visiting Rocky Point Park or Old Orchard Park, Fire-Rescue and Police urge you to stay off the mudflats, which can be as deep as eight feet in the middle of the inlet. Residents and visitors are asked to stay on the boardwalks and trails. If you get stuck in the mud, stay calm and do not struggle to free yourself, as you will risk injury and potentially sink even deeper; yell for help and, if you have a phone, call and ask for Fire. If you see someone who is stuck, advise the person not to panic. Call and ask for Fire. The Rocky Point Boat Launch and Sasamat Lake are extremely busy over the summer months. It s important for you and your family to refresh your knowledge of water safety, and to ensure any life-saving or safety equipment is in top shape and ready to use on the water or at the beach. When visiting our beautiful parks and recreation areas, don t forget to remove all valuables from your vehicle and lock your car doors. Valuables left in a vehicle are easy prey for thieves. Summer road-safety programs, such as CounterAttack road checks, car and passenger safety campaigns, and highrisk driving campaigns, are in full force, and Port Moody Police officers will be out in the community targeting drivers who put themselves and others at risk. He s really stuck! During a training session, it took approximately 30 minutes to free this Port Moody Fire-Rescue staff member from the mud. + ARE YOU PREPARED FOR AN EMERGENCY? Port Moody Fire-Rescue s Emergency Management Division will be at two community events this summer to answer your questions and hand out information about how to prepare for an emergency. Visit the Emergency Management Tent at Car-Free Day (St. John s Street, August 19, 12noon to 7pm) and Ioco Ghost Town Day (Ioco Road and 1st Avenue, September 23, 12noon to 4pm). Fire-Rescue staff will be happy to help you get started on creating your household emergency plan and building emergency kits for your home, vehicle, and work place SUMMER
7 Watch your waste to keep people and bears safe We can all make a difference when it comes to keeping people and bears safe in our community. The most important action you can take to help reduce encounters between humans and wildlife is to manage access to garbage and other attractants. Here are some tips for dealing with garbage, green waste, and recycling: store garbage and green waste carts indoors, or in a bear-resistant waste enclosure, whenever possible; place your carts at your pick-up spot on collection day only between the hours of 5:30am and 7:30am; bring carts back indoors, or into a bear-resistant waste enclosure in your backor side-yard, as soon as possible after the contents have been collected; on non-collection days, ensure carts remain securely closed with bear clips locked; regularly rinse all carts, as well as items to be recycled, to eliminate odours; and report any carts that are being stored contrary to the Solid Waste Bylaw, or out for pick up early, to the City s Bylaw Enforcement team, by phone at or at bylaw@portmoody.ca. Here are some other ways to help to prevent encounters between people and wildlife: keep the ground clear of fallen fruit and bird seed; avoid using birdfeeders; store freezers indoors, not on decks or in carports; and clean your barbeque grill, and remove and empty the grease trap after each use. If you do encounter a bear, remain calm; stop and back up slowly do not run; speak calmly, as your voice helps to identify you as human. Report bear sightings or other wildlife concerns to the B.C. Conservation Officer Service at Visit portmoody.ca/wildlife to learn more SUMMER 7
