It is now September and we have had a great summer for Cruisin with the weather cooperating for most of the summer. I would like to reflect on some of the events of the summer starting with our annual car show, which was a great success again this year although not raising the fund that we would have liked to have. It does bring out the importance of the advance ticket sales as without them this year we would have been about a break even, with no donation for our charity. There were a number of other events over the summer not all sponsored by the NACCC but all appear to have been a success including our Bergs Ice Cream Run which had about 16 kid and around 30 cars. I would like to congratulate those members who took part in the Coast to Coast 2010 Tour it is a great accomplishment to travel this country in a vintage car, visit with so many others who have the same interest and make many friends along the way. The summer season is drawing to a close and this weekend members of the club will support the Heart and Stroke Foundation by raising money and riding The Big Bike at Quidi Vidi with a BBQ and cruise after. The next meeting will be Oct. 13th, 2010 and will be our Annual General Meeting and Election of Officers. I would like to thank the members of the executive, our committees and the general membership for their support in making this another successful year. Thank you and Happy Cruisin Carl Hamlyn President Newfoundland Antique & Classic Car Club 2
3 Editor s Note Hello all, So, September is here. Who would have thought that summer would fly by so quickly? The kids are back to school, and the cars will be tucked away in just another couple of months. Seasons change it s a fact of life. However, that does not mean that we will miss out on the opportunity to see each other as the weather grows colder. I recall many cold nights, sipping tea or coffee at A&W on Kenmount Road, dreaming about the sun and summer. Speaking of getting together, I want to mention the cover picture. On Labour Day, a few car enthusiasts gathered together to go on a run. We left CBS around 10am and travelled to Route 90, heading out west to Route 80. Along our way north on Route 80, we stopped for lunch in Winterton. We then continued north to Old Perlican, and south along route 70 to Carbonear for a coffee break. We headed back to CBS via route 60 (which has a very nice stretch of new pavement, I might add) and arrived back where we started around 6pm. It was a wonderful day, and we all agreed these little runs are a perfect way to enjoy our cars. This was such a busy summer, and I would really like highlight a few events. The sun did not shine at the Meadow Creek Manor on 8 July, but a few of us braved the threatening rain. We had a fabulous turn out of cars for the Easter Seals Bergs Run on 18 July (which was MUCH better than last year). We also had a small crowd at the Veterans Pavillion on 1 August 5 cars showed up in the rain, but the seniors who ventured outside were very appreciative. I would like to say a big thank you to all those who made the effort to come out to the many retirement homes in the city during the summer. We also had the pleasure of hosting the 2010 Coasters in July. I, like many, spent hours circling Pippy Park, taking pictures and sharing stories with car enthusiast from across the country. I have a little pet project as well that I would like some assistance with. I would like to make a list of all of the shows from this past year and a list of all the winners. So, for any show that you attended, please send me what you might remember of the winners. I will publish the list in the next newsletter in December. Remember, this newsletter is for all of us to enjoy, and anytime you have something to include in the newsletter, just pass it along. One last thing, please come out for the AGM and election of officers on 13 October Sincerely, Jackie Smith, Editor Newfoundland Antique & Classic Car Club 3

7 A few thank you notes Here are a few notes of thanks which have been passed on to the club Although the weather for Sunday wasn t great, a couple of cars showed up for the Caribou Memorial Pavilion Show (DVA). The 6-piece live band called Slant Six, set up in the lobby and played for over 2 hours. We enjoyed the music from as far back as the 50 s and even some accordion songs were played. The television show So You Think You Can Dance couldn t compare with the residents of the DVA. Whether they could walk or required the use of a wheelchair, they danced the afternoon away. Thanks to the DVA Staff, the volunteers, and Slant Six. Thanks are also extended to Jackie and Dale Smith and Jerome Breen for taking their cars out. Hopefully next year the weather will cooperate. Moira Farrell --- Thanks to all members who attended the Bergs Run on Sunday, July 18. It was wonderful to see so many show up to take the Easter Seals kids on the run to Bergs for an ice cream. The happy faces of the kids show how much they enjoyed the day. Eileen Bartlett of Easter Seals also asked to have her thanks expressed to the club members. Your participation is very much appreciated. Moira Farrell Newfoundland Antique & Classic Car Club 7
8 ---- Hats off to Connie Hilliard who did a great job as Captain for Big Bike, Connie you did an amazing job at fundraising, and was so organized at keeping all the members informed. From me, Sharon Thistle, my heartfelt thanks to you, and the all the members who participated and supported this great event. 9 The World's Rarest Car? (from an sent by L Loveless to a few friends) I might have seen this car in That year, the General Motors Motorama came to Aberdeen (Washington) with a number of prototype "cars of the future". My brothers and I rode the train down to Aberdeen to see them. In a box somewhere, I have some old black and white photos of that day, so will save this for future verification. The world's rarest automobile - A 1954 concept old's Rocket F88 - the only one in existence. John S. Hendricks, (Discovery Communications founder) paid in excess of 3 million to acquire a 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 Convertible Concept Car. After spending decades as a collection of parts stuffed into wooden crates the F-88 was reassembled. In 1954 the F-88 was a Motorama Dream Car and was one of only two or an unconfirmed possible three ever created. The F-88 seen here is literally the only car left of its kind and was sold to John and Maureen Hendricks at the prestigious Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona for an unbelievable $3,240,000. This acquisition made automotive history and is the cornerstone of the Gateway Colorado Automobile Museum in its own special room in a rotating display worthy of the F-88!
