An area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Mourne Mountains are the most picturesque in Ireland and were the inspiration for the writer CS Lewis s magical land of Narnia in his popular children s books the Chronicles of Narnia. In this compact range, 15 miles long and 8 miles wide, only a dozen of the sixty or so individual summits rise above 2,000ft, with Slieve Donard, at 2,796ft, the highest peak in Ulster. The popular resort of Newcastle, where Slieve Donard really does sweep down to the sea offers family fun, plus the bonus of mountains and championship golf right on your doorstep. Nearby Bryansford and Tollymore are centres for outdoor adventure - from the sublime to the extreme. Rated one of the best golf course s in Northern Ireland, Kirkiston Castle Golf Club with 18 holes Kirkistown Castle boasts a real LINKS golf course with the added bonus that it was designed by the legendary James Braid ( ), who was reputedly one of the greatest golfers the game has ever seen and went onto to be one of the greatest golf course designers. It is the most easterly 18 hole golf course in Ireland and has been in the same original location for over 100 years. Cloughey Pavilion offers additional outdoor sports, including newly refurbished floodlit tennis courts and an outdoor bowling green. Of historical interest is Kirkistown Castle, built around 1622 by a Norman landlord, Roland Savage, at the site of a ninth-century round tower. With its impressive three-storey tower house built in late medieval tradition, it was occupied until Parts of the bawn (defensive) wall survive with threequarter round flanker towers at the angles. The tower was remodeled in Gothic style in 1800 by a Col. Johnston, and in 1836 some further work was performed by a very young Master Montgomery of Grey Abbey. The building was left, however, with a partial roof and broken windows, and the elements soon returned it to disrepair until The Northern Ireland Environment Agency restored and opened it to the public for the first time in The Built Heritage dept. of DENI maintain a number of archaeological sites in this area of the Upper Ards, including Kirkiston Castle and the ruins of The White House said to be an early mid 17th century Plantation defended farmhouse. In 2004, the construction of the Somme Memorial Garden was undertaken in a prominent location at Main Road overlooking the beach. The scheme was awarded an EU grant which enabled the design and building of an attractive garden with artistic panels about the Irish Regiments that participated in the Battle of the Somme in the First World War. The new garden replaced some informal murals that also related to the First World War. The new memorial combines a fitting tribute with a beautiful garden area for everyone who wants to stroll through or sit in contemplation on the seats. Kirkiston Short Circuit Racing Track hosts both car and motor cycle events most weekends of the visitor season. It is the home of Race School Ireland, being the only MSA Car Racing licensed circuit in Ireland offering fast sections, demanding corners and up-to-date safety requirements.
