1 Nebraska Leadership Alumni Ireland & Northern Ireland Farm Tour Giant s Causeway Cliffs of Moher Blarney Castle Ring of Kerry August 10-21, 2020 The Emerald Isle enjoys a unique climate receiving gulf stream weather patterns which keep the island quite mild. Rainfall is abundant and the rich glacial soils attribute to 67% of the land being used for agriculture and 10% being used for forestry. Almost 80% of the agriculture area is devoted to pasture, hay and grass silage, 11% to rough silage and 10% to crop production (wheat, oats, barley, potatoes). Cattle and sheep are the main livestock produced in Ireland. Key markets for Irish exports are the UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Russia and China. Dairy products comprise most of its exports with beef, processed foods and beverages (beer and whiskey) following closely. Ireland suffered economic decline throughout the 1900s but the Celtic Tiger since the 1990s gave the country new life, especially with its expertise in the technology markets. There s plenty of craic (good times) to be discovered in the charming pubs with live music. The pubs, found on every street corner, are a mainstay of Irish social life and you will find all ages conversing about the village news. August is a fabulous time to visit with its mild weather and blooming flowers.

2 Itinerary Day 1 Mon, Aug 10 DEPART FOR DUBLIN Depart Omaha en route to Dublin. Dublin is 6 hours ahead of Central Standard Time. Meals: Meals on flight Day 2 Tues, Aug 11 DUBLIN / BELFAST Arrival Dublin. Ireland is six hours ahead of Central Standard Time. Upon arrival, clear customs and meet the local driver-guide whom will be with the group the entire stay. Journey to Belfast, about two and a half hours. Check into hotel for two nights. Belfast started out as a small hamlet with fertile land along the mouth of the Lagan. Soon, marauders and pirates realized the lough was deep and our shores were safe from the north Atlantic storms. The perfect haven for repairing sea ravaged ships. From these early stages the industrious locals developed a boat building trade. Enjoy the cobblestoned streets and flair of the Edwardian architecture. After, embark on a city tour of Belfast with the opportunity to visit Queen s College Botanical Gardens with its Victorian greenhouse and breathtaking collection of roses. Tour ends with a visit to the Titanic Belfast located in the revived wharf district. Belfast was a thriving shipbuilding and manufacturing port in the late 1800s and early 1900s. View the piers where the Titanic was built in order to get an idea of the extreme size of the ocean liner. Dinner and overnight Belfast. Europa Hotel Belfast or similar Meals: Meals on plane, Dinner Day 3 Wed, Aug 12 GIANT S CAUSEWAY Early breakfast and depart along the Northeastern Coast to the Giant s Causeway. Flanked by the wild North Atlantic Ocean on one side and a landscape of dramatic cliffs on the other, for centuries the Giant s Causeway has inspired artists, stirred scientific debate and captured the imagination of all who see it. Inquiring minds have marveled at the regularity of the stones shape and the vastness of their number. Science, of course, holds the answers to most of these questions but in the days before scientists there were storytellers. Storytellers have their own explanation for this captivating stretch of coast, and many stories endure to the present day. The most famous legend associated with the Giant s Causeway is that of Irish giant, Finn McCool. It was imagined that the causeway is the remains of the bridge that Finn built linking Ireland to Scotland. The landscape became so imbued with the spirit of this legend that it gave rise to the name the Giant s Causeway. Lunch on a beef cattle farm that runs a registered Belgian Blue herd and a Hereford herd. Visit Bushmills Distillery. For over 400 years, this small village in Northern Ireland has handcrafted some of the best whiskey in the world! Return to Belfast. Dinner included. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Day 4 Thurs, Aug 13 LON- DONDERRY Depart to Londonderry. En route visit a dairy farm with 550 head of Tailormaid Holstein, a state of the art dairy and arable acreage with silage. Continue to Armagh to visit an apple producer. The famous Armagh Bramley apples have become the third product from the north of Ireland to have been granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status under EU law. Armagh is known throughout Ireland as the Orchard County, with apples having grown in the county for 3,000 years. St Patrick is said to have planted an apple tree at Ceangoba, an ancient settlement east of Armagh City. The reputation of Armagh as the Orchard County is solely due to the Armagh Bramley Apple. 99 % of all top fruit grown in Northern Ireland is Bramley Apple, and 95 % of all top fruit grown in Northern Ireland is in Armagh. 3 Day 5 Fri, Aug 14 DER- RY-LONDONDERRY Free morning for leisurely breakfast. Derry, also known as Londonderry, is an ancient walled city that played a role in many turning points in Northern Irish history. It is located on a causeway. It is the only remaining Irish city that has complete city walls which were built in the early 1600s. Walking tour this morning to discover the town with population of 85,000. Depart for Westport via Ballyboffey and Donegal and along the wild Atlantic Ocean through Ballyshannon, passing under Benbulben, through Budnoran to Sligo and on to Westport for a two night stay. Visit a dairy farm. Dinner at hotel. Castlecourt Hotel Westport or similar Meals: Breakfast, Dinner Day 6 Sat, Aug 15 CONNEMARA Today enjoy a tour of Connemara, some of the most rugged scenery in Ireland. Pass through North Mayo and the Connemara pass under Croagh Patrick Mountain, a place of great pilgrimage in Ireland. St Patrick spent, according to legend, 40 days and 40 nights on this mountain serving penance. Stop for a spectacular overlook of Clew Bay. It is a mild walk and you can rent a walking stick by the hour. Continue through Luisburg and then down the famine road to Leenane, the location where The Field was filmed. Visit to Kylemore Abbey whose greatest attraction is its location. Nestled at the base of Duchruach Mountain on the northern shore of Lough Pollacappul, in the heart of the Connemara Mountains, it is regarded as one of Ireland's most romantic buildings. Continue to the southern part of Connemara to visit a farm that produces abalone. Abalone is a shellfish delicacy and also has exquisite items made of the shells. Learn about the cultivation process, taste the abalone and of course a chance to shop. Return to Westport. Dinner included. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner Day 7 Sun, Aug 16 KIL- LARNEY Depart for Killarney via the Atlantic west coast of Clare. Travel down the Atlantic seaboard via Galway Bay & Ballyvaughan to Dunguaire Castle at Kinvarra. See The Burren (Gaelic for rocky land) and visit the dramatic 650ft Cliffs of Moher. The cliffs boast one of Ireland s most spectacular views. On a clear day the Aran Islands are visible in Galway Bay, as are the valleys and hills of Connemara. These fantastic cliffs have been the subject of many songs written in Ireland. Hotel check-in two nights Killarney. Killarney Towers Hotel or similar Meals: Breakfast, Dinner Day 8 Mon, Aug 17 RING of KERRY Prepare yourself for one of the most gorgeous drives in Ireland, the Ring of Kerry, a beautiful trail (170km) in the southwest of Ireland passing through Killorglin, Glenbeigh, Cahersiveen, Waterville, Coomakesta Pass with it magnificent views over Derrynane, home of Daniel O Connell, known as The Liberator, Castlecove & Sneem, Moll s Gap, Ladies View, Killarney National Park and along the Lakes of Killarney to Killarney town. En route, enjoy a sheepherding demonstration and a pub lunch. Also visit a cowcalf operation. The farmer enjoys low inputs by herding his livestock on mountainous rocky land that cannot be used otherwise. His type of small scale farming is a considerable component to the Irish beef industry. 4 Day 9 Tues, Aug 18 CORK Depart and continue to Cork. Pass over the Cork/Kerry Mountains via the Irish speaking villages of Ballymakeery & Ballyvourney to the old market town of Macroom, where you will see Macroom Castle, once home of Sir William Penn, whose son was later to found the state of Pennsylvania. Travel on to the village of Blarney via the valley of the river Lee. Visit Blarney Castle and opportunity for shopping at Blarney Woolen Mills. Visit a Dairy Farm for a chat with a farmer & his wife. They have arable crops and dairy cattle and have interesting stories about their dairy operation and the EU regulations. Hotel check in. Pub dinner included with live music. Rochestown Park Hotel or similar Meals: Breakfast, Dinner Day 10 Wed, Aug 19 KILKENNY / DUBLIN Depart to Cahir. Visit Cahir Cattle Market. Also visit an arable farm that produces cereal crops. Visit Kilkenny Castle, a 12th Century castle established by Strongbow. Continue to Dublin. Dinner included. The city was founded by Vikings in the 8th Century and has since been an important part of Europe s maritime history. The Normans remained on the island over 800 years and it is evident in most of the castle architecture. Visit to Trinity College and the famous Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript of the New Testament said to have been produced by monks in the year 800.
