6 TWENTY YEARS AGO IN SPORT AVIATION The cover of the October, 1994 issue of Sport Aviation featured an inflight photo of the FMX-4 Facetmobile, designed and built by the husband and wife team of Lynne and Barnaby Wainfan. The Facetmobile is a lifting body aircraft made of flat plane sections similar to the F-117 Stealth Fighter. This was not a garage project by a novice just guestimating this and that. Both Lynne and Barnaby could display on the den wall Master degrees in aerospace engineering, and had been employed by various Southern California Aerospace companies including Lockheed and Hughes Aircraft. Barnaby had been intrigued by a toss glider featured in American Aircraft Modeler magazine that could be made from scrap balsa and that flew much better than conventional wisdom said that it should. He built the model, and determined to attempt to build a full size single-place version. The Facetmobile was intended to be research proof of concept prototype that would spawn a family of personal airplanes intended for the real world private pilot, i.e., the person who flies 30 or 40 hours a year basically for fun. A Rotax 503 turning a custom 3-bladed propeller provided forward motion, but no performance figures were given. As is often the case, your faithful reporter does not remember any other versions of the Facetmobile being built or marketed. In EAA World, Jack Cox covered the 1994 Oshkosh Fly-In Convention including new designs that were introduced, the various grand champion winners, and lots of photos. Oshkosh `94 featured a salute to the Apollo program on the 25 th anniversary of the first moon landing. 15 former Apollo astronauts were present and were interviewed and asked how they got into aviation, what was the highlight of the Apollo program, and what they felt was in the future for the United States space program. Jack Cox also provided an extensive narrative of the experiences of Bob Hoover from the time he arrived in North Africa, was assigned to the 52 nd Fighter Group in Palermo, Sicily, became a POW, to the time late in the war when he commandeered a Focke Wulf 190 and flew to freedom from Germany to Holland. Don Taylor discussed GPS and noted that the complete satellite constellation was in place and three non-precision approaches had already been approved. He also described the future capabilities of the system for data link of real time weather and traffic to an aircraft using ADS-B. He had the opportunity to fly a C-172 that had been equipped with an early version of the system and was very much impressed with the ability to see a display of weather as well as other traffic. He noted that several aircraft on the display were impossible to see out the window even though he knew their location and altitude. Carlys Sjoholm reported on the recently completed World Aerobatic Championship that was held at a Debrecen Airport in Hungary. The men`s champion was Xavier de Lapparent and the women`s trophy was won by Christine Genin, both of France. The French also took home both of the team championship trophies. The overall highest scoring member of the U.S. team was Patty Wagstaff who was 10 th overall, followed by Rick Massegee at 19 th. Patty was a close second in the women`s competition. Budd Davisson continued his discussion of building from plans with some thoughts on setting up a workshop, acquiring tools, and cost control. Quite a bit of the magazine was taken up with a gift guide and new products, as the holidays were approaching. Dr. Hunter Heath discussed kidney stones, including prevention, treatment, and effects on medical certification. Tony Bingelis provided some considerations when ready to take the recently completed project to the airport. Bob Hartmaier EAA As The Prop Turns - EAA Chapter 315 6
