3 Good News About Sussex Airport An article in the December 15 th Sunday Star Ledger reported that a consortium of investors, including several air show performers, is in the final stages of negotiations to purchase Sussex Airport. In the beginning of December a judge approved the sale between Paul Styger, and Sussex Aviation, headed by principal investor Alan Antaki, an associate at PHT Aerospace, a Pompton Plains based aviation firm. The package includes a sale price of $1.2 million as well as $60,000 in back taxes due to Wantage Township and more than $400,000 owed to lienholders on the property. The sale is now awaiting approval by the FAA and the state Department of Transportation. Rick Asper, an attorney and aviation consultant representing Sussex Aviation, reported that not only will the new owners keep the airport open, they hope to revive the Sussex Air Show, traditionally held on the last weekend of August, and last held in Asper said that the show could return as early as For more info go to and do a search for Sussex Air Show. 5 In July we had a summer picnic at Jay s grass strip. What a great evening that was! In December a bunch of our members went to the fly-in at Massey Aerodrome in Maryland. It was a beautiful day to fly. 5
6 TWENTY YEARS AGO IN SPORT AVIATION Chris Heintz, President of Zenair Aircraft, was shown on the cover of the January 1994 issue of Sport Aviation piloting his new Zenair CH-2000 trainer. Based on the CH-200 homebuilt and conceived under the new Small Aircraft Certification Compliance Program, the CH-2000 was to be a fully certified two-place trainer that would be inexpensive to own and operate in order to appeal to flight schools. Powered by a tried and true Lycoming and built using Avex blind rivets where allowable, the plane was about the size of a Cherokee 140 as far as exterior dimensions, but with a 46 inch wide cabin and extra high ceiling, it was noticeably roomier on the inside than any existing trainer. It was to be built at the main Zenair factory in Midland, Canada and at a new factory to be built in Mexico, MO. Chris had previously worked at Aerospatiale, Avions Robin, Embraer, and dehavilland, and found he was partial to smaller companies and production facilities. Hence the two factories for the CH He said that if demand ever warranted larger scale production numbers, he would just start a third factory somewhere else. The CH-2000 is now being built in the U.S. by Zenith Aircraft in Mexico, MO, and in Jordan. The Zenair kits are still manufactured at the Canadian plant; the kit version of the CH-2000 is called the CH-640. A quick check of faa.gov reveals that there are presently 26 CH-2000 s currently registered in the U.S. One is registered to a Delaware corporation with an address in Hackensack, but the registration expired in June of In 1992 EAA announced that there would be a new judging category in the Antique/Classic Division called Contemporary to include aircraft built between 1956 and At the 1993 Oshkosh Fly-In the first winner of that category was Jerry Ross 1959 Piper PA Comanche. When Jerry found the plane it was damaged as the previous owner had lost control during a landing at a grass strip. The wing had struck a fence post and the prop had made aluminum tinsel out of a lawn chair. The prop had been replaced but the dent remained in the wing. Jerry had the wing repaired and new neoprene fuel cells installed. When a friend provided him with an original 1959 Piper brochure that showed the original paint scheme of the plane as well as good images of the interior, the restoration die was cast. Jerry elected a complete respray to replicate the original factory scheme. At the same time all the original Plexiglas windows were replaced with ¼ inch material, including replacing the original two-piece windshield with a new one piece one. All the Plexiglas pieces were routed around the edges so that they fit flush with the outer fuselage skin. As long as he had gone that far he then employed the services of an upholstery shop to bring the interior back to original condition as well. The panel remained original, and the only concession to modern navigation was a yoke mounted Trimble Flightmate GPS. Jack Cox contributed an article describing two Kitfoxes, owned by Murle Williams and Jerry Gruber, that had been built according to the basic kit but fleshed out with custom add-ons that reflected the personal tastes and desires of the owner/builder. Murle modified the leading edge profile according to advice from Harry Ribblet to be similar to the later Kitfox IV wing. He also went to great lengths to achieve a smooth finish on the fabric, and either polish, chrome plate, or powder coat all metal parts, with the exception of the firewall which was gold anodized. Jerry went out for the full custom look as well, with a full leather interior, intricate paint scheme, and all aluminum, brass, or bronze components polished and clearcoated. His panel featured a Flybuddy GPS and Argus 3000 Moving Map display along with a Pioneer AM/FM stereo tape deck. One of the special activities at the 1993 Oshkosh Fly-In was a tribute to the WASPS. Carlys Sjoholm contributed an article that summarized the history of the Women Airforce Service Pilots and interviewed a few who were present at the Convention to entertain us with their stories. As The Prop Turns - EAA Chapter 315 6
7 Sam Burgess, who the old timers will remember was always involved in some way with the Bucker Jungmeister, had in 1988 installed an Allison turbine engine in his homebuilt Jungmeister. After completing his experiments and setting an FAI time to climb record, he decided that the cost of maintaining that engine was a bit much. Such as $20,000 for a tear down and $4,500 for one turbine wheel. While contemplating the installation of a Lycoming 0-540, the Iron Curtin came down, and Russian built Sukois began appearing on the scene with the Vedenyev M-14P nine-cylinder radial engine of 360 hp. A decision was made, the Allison was sold and a Vedenyev purchased and installed. Initial tests resulted in a take-off roll of 150 ft. using 50% power and full power rate of climb showed the rate-ofclimb gauge pegged at 6,000 fpm. The Grand Champion Rotorcraft award at the 1993 Oshkosh Fly-In was won by Frank Marchetti with his Avenger. Frank had begun his interest in gyrocopters by building and flying a Benson. He enjoyed it, but it lacked one thing that he wanted most, a place for a passenger. He developed a prototype two-place gyro, but it did not perform up to his expectations with the VW engine that he had installed, so he went back to the drawing board and came up with a design that used a Lycoming He called it the Avenger, and brought it to Oshkosh in 1980 where it won the Grand Champion Rotorcraft award. He began selling kits, and refining the design. The 1993 version that won the Grand Champion award featured extensive detailing, upholstered seats, and a five-bladed composite propeller. In EAA Chapter Activities various regional Fly-Ins were featured, including the Rocky Mountain Regional Fly-In at Greeley, CO, the North Central Old Fashioned Fly-In at Rock Falls, IL, the Louisiana Fly-In at Houma, LA., and the East Coast Regional Fly-In at New Castle, DE. If my memory serves, Howard Levy and I attended the event at New Castle. Of note was that the winner of the Grand Champion Antique award was a 1932 Taylor E-2 Cub owned by Paul Dougherty. The winner of the Grand Champion Classic award was a Cessna 195 owned by..paul Dougherty. This is the same Paul Dougherty who now operates the Golden Age Air Museum with his father, and both planes are now part of the collection of the museum. Last September, as we were putting the planes back in the hangars after the Barnstormers show, Paul asked me if I wanted to fly his Cub. I did not wait for him to change his mind or ask again, and I immediately jumped into the E-2 and said to him, give me a prop. It was rather cold, and I only had a wind-breaker, so my flight only lasted about 10 minutes, but it was a lot of fun to go back to the early days of aviation when folks flew with an oil pressure gauge, an oil temperature gauge, and nothing else but the wind in the face and the seat of the pants. I did not realize at the time that I was flying an award winner. In Hints for Homebuilders Mark Eminger described how to add a Plexiglas guard to a circle cutter tool to increase safety while it is in use, and Gene Cook advised on hooking up fuel systems. In EAA Advisory Council Fred Zinring talked about FAA ramp checks. In the Sportplane Builder Tony Binglies discussed various methods for providing cockpit ventilation. Bob Hartmaier EAA
