5 AGENDA ITEM CARDIFF COUNCIL CYNGOR CAERDYDD PUBLIC PROTECTION COMMITTEE: 3 JULY 2007 REPORT OF THE CHIEF STRATEGIC PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENT OFFICER STREET AND HOUSE TO HOUSE COLLECTION LICENCE APPLICATION RSPB Capital Wildlife Peregrines on the Clock Tower 1. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has applied for permission to operate a street collection in Museum Avenue for the following periods : 1 st July st July Normally permission is only given for a maximum of three days to avoid nuisance and to give an equal opportunity for all charities to gain funding. 3. In support of the application the RSPB have supplied the following information: The collection is part of the RSPB's Aren't Birds Brilliant! scheme. The nationwide scheme aims to give people a first-hand and unique view of birds, at the same time enthusing and educating them about the bird life and habitat that exists around them. This unique event is taking place in Cardiff between 1 st July and 31 st July 2007 and is called Capital Wildlife Peregrines on the Clock Tower. The project is supported by the National Museum Wales and Cardiff Council. Every year a pair of peregrine hawks return to breed on the clock tower above Cardiff's Civic Hall. This year, for the first time ever, we will be beaming live footage from the nest to a screen inside the National Museum Cardiff. To compliment this, we will be establishing an outside viewing area, where volunteers with binoculars and telescopes will show people first-hand views of these magnificent birds. A street collection licence would enable us to collect donations via a static collection box and pin badge box. We would hope that such a viewing area would also allow us to recruit RSPB members and volunteers. We would expect the above project to attract media interest as well as general public and existing RSPB membership interest.
