If any student is caught with someone of the opposite gender in their room with the door closed, this will be grounds for dismissal from the trip and maybe extra consequences from the school. Tattoos or Body Piercing are NOT allowed. Violation= Parents & Mid-Pacific is immediately notified. Students will be sent home (if feasible) or restricted to a supervised room. This includes even normal ear piercing. DO NOT have any type of piercing work done on this trip. DO NOT get a tattoo or henna done on this trip. Any type of body modification is not allowed and is grounds for dismissal. Leaving the residence or venue without a chaperone is NOT allowed. Violation= Immediate notification of parents and the school. The students will be restricted to supervised activity until returning to Honolulu. This type of infraction will result in immediate suspicion with pending dismissal from Mid-Pacific. Students, the chaperones on the trip are there for your safety. Japan is one of the safest countries in the world but it is also large and easy to get lost in. Please do not leave any location without a chaperone and do not wander randomly. This is the easiest way to get lost. Braking Curfew is not allowed. Violation= Will be determined by the time of the incident and the duration. The penalty can be as simple as having to do chores or other consequences set by the lead chaperone or as severe as suspension from school, being sent home at the parents expense, or even being expelled from school. Please do not break curfew. As soon as we have Bed Check/Lights Out, NO ONE is allowed to leave their rooms unless it is an emergency. Hazing is not allowed. Violation= 1) the immediate notification of parents and the school and 2) the immediate return home of he students (if feasible) or the student s restriction to a supervised room. If the excursion is a club or team event, the students will be removed from the club or team. 3 32

5 Behavioral Expectations and Consequences Student travel is a privilege. Traveling students are considered to be representatives of Mid-Pacific Institute. Behavioral expectations for all off-campus excursions are the same as the on-campus expectations outlined in the MPI Student Handbook. Additional consequences may result from violations. Chaperones Celia Chun Wright: Line: The following expectations are also in effect for off-campus travel: ACCOMMODATIONS It is required that all students stay in the accommodations which have been arranged by the school. ACCOMPANIMENT Students must be in near proximity of adult chaperones at all times. Students may never leave the hotel, residence, or travel venue without an adult chaperone. TRAVEL ATTIRE When representing Mid-Pacific in a public venue, students must be in dress code as stipulated in the student handbook. Groups, athletic teams or activity may be required to be in uniform attire as determined by the coach or teacher. For the MPI Japan Tour 2016, all students must be in Mid-Pacific Middle or High School dress code. On days where the dress code says Free Dress, you may take that to mean School Spirit Attire so you may wear apparel such as t- shirts with the Mid Pacific Logo on it. BEHAVIOR The Mid-Pacific Code of Conduct is in effect while students are traveling on a school sponsored trip. In addition, the following specific responses are in effect: Kazu Marubayashi Line: Jackie Muramoto Line: Alcohol, cigarette smoking, or other controlled substance use, regardless of local ordinances regarding age or use, is not allowed. Violation= Parents & Mid Pacific will be immediately contacted and the student will be sent home immediately (if feasible) or restricted to a supervised room. Students, it is very easy to get alcohol and cigarettes in Japan and rules for drinking and smoking are more lenient in Japan. Please remember that on this trip, you are bound by school rules. DO NOT be caught in any situation (even as a joke) with anything that might be considered contraband. You will be sent home immediately at your parents expense and with Mid-Pacific s zero tolerance policy, you will probably be expelled from school. 31 4

6 Packing List Baggage Items Luggage 1 lightweight suitcase that is 29 or less (measured on one side) Everyone must be able to carry his/her own suitcase!! All trip participants are allowed ONE suitcase on this trip. Baggage fees have already been included in the cost of the tour. Backpack- 1 Backpack for carry on items You may also carry on one additional personal item (this could be a purse, camera bag, or something small. Mandatory Attire Everyone will need one formal outfit for the concert we will be attending on 3/26. This may include a nice collared shirt, long pants/skirt, and dress shoes. Attending a concert in Japan is not like attending a concert in Hawaii. These tickets are expensive and you are expected to dress and behave like this is a special occasion. DRESS CODE: While outside the hotel room, students are required to wear long pants & shoes. Girls can wear skirts mid-thigh or longer in length. Students may wear T-shirts and long sleeve shirts with or w/o a collar as long as there are no offensive logos or language, are not ripped, torn or too tight. Blouses must be in good taste (When in doubt, check with Mr. Masaki, Mr. Lawi, or Ms. Chun-Wright.) All shoes must be covered. No slippers or shorts are allowed OUTSIDE your room. Any type of fish or seafood is allowed. AT THE AIRPORT: The following applies only to CARRY-ONS ALL Liquids, Gels & Paste Items: 1. Must be in ORIGINAL containers. 2. Must be 3 oz or less 3. All of these items are to be packed together in just ONE QUART size Ziplock Plastic Bag. This includes toothpaste, contacts solution, eye drops, Purell etc. if packed in Carry-on bags. You will be required to take the Ziplock Bag out of your carry-on to be scanned separately. Ask Mr. Masaki, Mr Hayashi, or visit if you have specific questions of anything in this section. 6

Please work out a system with your chaperones so we can do head counts in a simple and efficient manner. Your group leader will be the one doing your bed check. Chaperones, you may only be in charge of a maximum of 10 students. If for some reason a chaperone cannot fulfill his/her duties, Mr. Masaki will take over for them III. If you have been waiting for longer than an hour or you are completely lost and can t find anyone to help you... A. Contact Bob-san or contact one of the directors. Bob will be with us in Osaka but he has a separate tour to lead after that in Tokyo. You can still call him if you need help and he will try to help you. His Japan cell number is Find and use a payphone (usually green). You will need some change to do this so make sure you have some coins on you. Put money in the phone and dial whatever number you need. (Bob will not be with the group the whole time, but he will know how to contact us and he will know where we are. Tell him you are part of the Mid Pacific Tour and you need help. He will find a way to help you.) 2. Find Wifi. Free Wifi is sometimes difficult to find in Japan. Look for a Starbucks or McDonalds. You may have to buy something from them to get access to wifi. Some stations have free wifi too. Once you have Wifi, send your directors a message through Line. Be ready to tell us where you are. 3. If you are in Osaka, you can call Ms. Mai who will be helping us at the Osaka College of Music. Her number is She speaks English and can get you help in Osaka. B. Call the hotel and leave a message of where to contact you and your location. If we cannot find you, the first place we will call is the hotel to see if you have left us a message. C. Hail a taxi and go back to the hotel. Be aware that hailing a taxi can be very expensive. Do this as a last resort.) 9 26

11 In Case of Emergency. If you are lost, the first thing you need to do is NOT PANIC!! I. If you are lost/left behind in a subway train station: A. Do not panic! B. If you don t make it on the train: 1. Stay where you are. We will send someone back for you. 2. We will know if you made it on because all chaperons will do a head count as soon as we board the train. 3.DO NOT catch any random train that comes by! 4.If you are waiting for longer than an hour or if the train was a shinkansen (bullet train), go to section III. C. If we are on a train and you cannot make it off the train. 1. Get off at the next stop. 2. We will know that you didn t make it off the train because chaperones will do a head count as soon as we get off. 3. After you get off at the next stop, stay near the place where you got off. We will send someone for you. 4. If you wait for longer than an hour, go to section III. II. If you are lost in Osaka/Tokyo A. Find a police officer (junsa) and get help. B. If you are in or near a station, find an information booth and ask for help. C. Find someone who knows English (usually young, female students or other foreigners) and get help from them. It might be awkward, but just approach them and ask them if they speak English. If you are lost, you need to find a way to get found and this might mean asking someone for help. D. If the above have been unsuccessful, go to section III. Japanese Customs Form This is one of two forms you will need to fill out when flying to Japan. Remember, this is just a sample so please fill in YOUR information. DO NOT just copy what is on this form! You must also keep this form in near pristine condition. If your form is creased or torn in any way, you will be asked to redo it at customs. You do not have to fill out the back of the form. You should not be bringing anything to sell in Japan. 12 Japanese Embarkation/Disembarkation Form (OLD) This is the second of two forms you will need to fill out when flying to Japan. Do not forget to sign your forms at the two X Locations. Remember, this is just a sample so please fill in YOUR information. Do NOT just copy what is on the form!! This form must also be kept in near pristine condition. If you have any unnecessary creases or tears in the form, you will be asked to do it again at immigration. Be honest and put how much Yen and Dollars you have in your possession. This has never been a problem in the past but be sure to bring LESS than $10,000 total cash valute. NO FORGET TO SINGN HERE! $

13 US Customs Form Everyone must fill out the US Customs form. You will not be able to leave the airport without having filled this out. This is just a sample form. Be sure you fill in your own information!! Do not forget to sign the X at the bottom and be sure to fill the form out in pen. For 11a, if you are not bringing food back home, then check NO. IF you are bringing any type of food, underline the word FOOD and be ready to tell Customs exactly what kind of food you are bringing back. DO NOT LIE to Customs. They may search your belongings and confiscate anything that they feel is contraband. There will probably be dogs sniffing your luggage for contraband. Japanese Disembarkation Card for Foreigners (NEW) This is the second of two forms you will need to fill out when flying to Japan. Do not forget to sign your form at the bottom. Remember, this is just a sample so please fill in YOUR information. Do NOT just copy what is on the form!! This form must also be kept in near pristine condition. If you have any unnecessary creases or tears in the form, you will be asked to do it again at immigration. There are statements on the back of the form that you should read but nothing to answer. On the back of the form, use broad categories such as Food, Souvenirs, or Clothing and list the items you have purchased while in Japan. Please keep track of your purchases so this form is easier to do. I have a List of Expenditures Page on the back on this booklet to help you keep track of your spending. Anything you bring back home should be logged down on the form. If you are going to buy something to consume in Japan, DO NOT log that on this form. Once you have your list somewhat organized, tally your items on the back of your customs form, add the totals up, and put that number in section 15 under Residents. Before you exit the airport, you may be stopped by Customs for a random luggage search OR if they suspect you have lied on your form. As was stated earlier, please do not lie. It is also important to leave Customs with your chaperone. They should be present if there is a luggage search. Just before you exit the airport, there is usually a customs agent that will collect this form. You cannot exit the airport without turning this in so please do not lose it

14 ITINERARY Codes: IFM In Flight Meal, IFS In Flight Snack, BB Breakfast, LL Lunch, DD Dinner 03/20 Tuesday (IFM) WEAR: SOME TYPE OF MPI LOGO SHIRT 10:30am- Everyone meet at Honolulu International Airport (HNL), Hawaiian Airlines (HA) counter for check-in. Please meet as an entire group before you go through ticketing and security. Please do not be late! The Hawaiian Airlines counter get very crowded! Please do not forget your passport!! You cannot get through the ticketing gate or security without your passport. You will be given 2 luggage tags (1 for your luggage and 1 for your carry on), a piece of fluorescent tape (for your luggage), a copy of the trip booklet (put your name on it), and a passport/name tag holder. You must keep the passport holder visible and on you at all times! Please bring a pen. You will need one for the flight. If you are in possession of electronics that looks so new, that customs may think you have purchased in Japan, you may consider doing a Form 4457 at the Customs Office BEFORE arriving at the airport. This will ensure you don t have to pay a duty/tax on your way back home. Please do not bring any items that would be considered contraband on school on this trip. All school rules are in effect and you can be expelled from school if you disobey rules. Please do not make jokes about weapons, bombs, guns or terrorism anywhere in the airport or on the place. Security is very strict about this! 11:00am Proceed through ticketing with your chaperone. There is a good chance that we will not have group check in so you will have to go to the HA Kiosk with your chaperone and do ticketing that way. Mr. Masaki and Mr. Lawi will be there to help you if you have trouble. Once your group has tickets, proceed through security with your chaperone. If someone gets stopped for something, make sure your chaperone is aware of it and is there to help you. Meet as a group outside of security and proceed to your gate as a group. You may wander the airport with your chaperone. Please use the buddy system when using the bathroom. 12:30pm Gather at the gate as a group and prepare to board the plane. 1:30pm Depart on HA flight #449 to Narita Airport (NRT) (9 hours 45min.) You will probably be asked to show your passport before you get on the plane. Students, DO NOT lose your passport! Keep it safe and with you at all times. You will not be able to exit the airport in Japan without your passport! 13 9:30am Arrive back at HNL. Get off the plane last. Chaperones double check to make sure no one has left anything behind on the plane. Go through Customs. You will need your completed customs form and passport. Enter Baggage Claim and find your luggage. You will go through Customs as a group. You will need to turn your customs form into an agent before you leave the airport. 10:15am Get picked up It is difficult to predict exactly where to get picked up. Please use your phone to contact the person who is picking you up to tell them you have landed. Students, it is important that you tell your chaperone you are leaving so they can check you off. This is important! Upon arrival at HNL and your parents pick you up, the tour disbands. 22

Make sure you have your passports! 9:45am- Meet in lobby of hotel with luggage and check ou We will be keeping our luggage in one area 10:30am Depart hotel for Ginza 11:00am Arrive at Ginza and go to Yamaha Ginza You will have free time with your chaperones in Ginza. There are a lot of things to see and do here but I would highly recommend you spend a good amount of time in the Yamaha Ginza Store. 1:15pm Meet at Yamaha Ginza We will have a buffet Yakiniku Lunch near Yamaha Ginza. After lunch, go to Okachimachi for last minute omiyage shopping 5:00pm Return to hotel 5:30pm Catch bus to Haneda Airport 6:15pm Arrive at Haneda Airport Please make sure you do not forget anything on the bus. You will need your passport! 6:30pm Go through ticketing with your chaperone Once everyone has completed ticketing, we will hang out at the airport for a little bit. 7:30pm Go through security and immigration as a group. 8:45pm meet at the gate and get ready to board the plane. 9:30pm Depart Haneda (HND) on Hawaiian Airlines flight HA#458 While in transit, be sure you do your UH Customs form. A sample has been provided for you. ***Cross International Dateline and gain a day*** *We will cross the International Date Line and lose a day due to travel.* *At some point on the flight, everyone will have to do a Japan Customs Declaration Form and a Disembarkation Card for Foreigner Form. Samples of the form are on pages of this booklet. To fill out the forms, you will need a PEN, your boarding pass, and your passport 03/21 Wednesday 7:00pm Arrive at Kansai Airport (KIX) Please use the bathroom before we land. Once we leave the plane, we will meet as a group and do a head count. Chaperones, check to make sure everyone has their passport and their forms filled out. Do NOT take pictures in the Immigration area! You will be scolded and your camera/device may be confiscated. Do not make any trouble in this area and refrain from loud talking. Security here is strict!! You must proceed through Immigration individually. Just give the person at the counter your completed forms and passport. You may be asked a few questions but normally, this procedure is easy and painless. The Immigration officer will take your picture, a machine will scan your fingerprint, and your passport will be stamped and a paper will be stapled inside. DO NOT remove the paper. You will need it when you leave the country. Once we are through Immigration, go to baggage claim as a group. The first group that gets there, please find our luggage and start taking it of the carousel and placing our things in one area. 8:15pm Depart KIX for Hotel Hanshin Osaka (about 60min) 9:15pm Arrive at Hotel Hanshin Osaka Please let Mr. Masaki and Bob off first so they can get your keys. Everyone else, help the bus driver unload the luggage from under the bus. Before you go to your hotel room. Mr. Masaki will show you where the meeting place is (it will probably be in the lobby). 9:30pm Meet in hotel lobby as a group. Mr. Masaki will take you to get snacks. Most of you will be waking up early due to jetlag and you might be hungry. 9:45pm Return to hotel 10:00pm- Bed Check/Lights out 21 14

16 03/22 Thursday (BB/LL) 6:00am Wake up call Due to jet lag, many of you will be up earlier than this. Please do not make excessive noise in your rooms. Other hotel guests will be trying to sleep. If you wake up early, get ready for the day but please do not leave your rooms unless an adult is with you. Adults will be patrolling the halls. 7:00am- Breakfast All trip participants except Marubayashi family, please bring your passports to breakfast. Bob will take your passports and pick up your rail passes. 8:30am- Depart hotel for an all day tour of Nara and Kyoto including: The Nara Deer Park and Great Buddha, Golden Pavilion, Nijo Castle, and Kiyomizu Temple. At some point, you will be fed a bento lunch, but if you are still hungry, there are lots of places to find food at the Deer Park and at Kiyomizu Temple. 6:00pm Return to Hotel 6:30pm Meet in lobby of hotel We will catch a train to Osaka Station where you will have free time with your chaperones. 8:15pm Meet at designated meeting area 8:30pm All groups return to hotel 9:30pm Lights Out 3/29 Thursday (BB) 6:00am Wake up 6:30am Breakfast 7:15am Depart hotel for Tokyo Disneyland (about an hour away by train) 8:00am Disneyland opens You will have all day with your chaperones at the park. You must stay with your chaperones the whole time. There should be enough chaperons to make just about any sized group you want. As the day progresses, we will determine how long we stay at the park based on the weather. 8:30pm Fireworks Show 9:00pm Meet at designated meeting area and leave park 10:00pm Return to Hotel 10:30pm Lights out 15 20

17 3/27 Tuesday-(BB/LL) 7:30am Wake up call 8:15am- Breakfast at hotel 9:15am- Depart hotel for Asakusa 9:50am Arrive at Asakusa and see the Kaminarimon Lantern, Nakamise Shopping Street, and Sensoji Temple. You will have some free time with your chaperone. 11:30am Meet at meeting area and go to Shamisen Concert (lunch provided at the concert) 1:00pm Concert Ends Depart Asakusa for Aoyama 2:00pm Taiko Class This class can be somewhat of a workout. Wear comfortable clothes. You may consider changing after. 3:30pm Taiko Class ends Walk from Taiko Studio through Omotesando We will top off at the Dominique Amesel Bakery in Omotesando 4:00pm- You will be shown the meeting place near Harajuku Station Free time on your own with your chaperones in the Harajuku/Omotesando area. 5:30pm Meet at designated spot and depart Harajuku for Ikebukuro 5:45pm Arrive back at hotel PM TBA We will probably do some sightseeing around Ikebukuro. Mr. Masaki will lead you to Sunshine City and you can have free time with your chaperone. 9:00pm Return to Hotel 10:00pm Lights Out 3/28 Wednesday (BB) 03/23 Friday (BB) 6:30am Wake Up 7:00am Breakfast at the hotel 8:00am Depart hotel for Kyoto Station 10:00am Hozu River Boat ride If you are prone to getting seasick, please bring medication! The ride is about 2 hours long 12:00pm Arrive in Arashiyama When we get off the boat, please notice the famous Togetsu-kyo Bridge. We will take a tour of the bamboo forest in Arashiyama Lunch will be on your own in Arashiyama. If you are not hungry or can wait, just get a small snack since the food establishments in the town are somewhat limited. 2:30pm Depart Arashiyama for Kyoto Station 3:00pm Arrive at Kyoto Station You will be given a short tour of the station and then be shown the meeting area. If you did not get to eat lunch in Arashiyama, you can find food easily at Kyoto Station. You will have free time on your own with Chaperones at Kyoto Station. 6pm Depart Kyoto Station for Osaka Station 6:30pm- Arrive back at Osaka Station As a group, we will decide what we are going to do after this time. Many of you will probably be tired and we can go back to the hotel and rest. 18 03/24 Saturday (BB) 6:30am- Wake up 7:00am Breakfast at the hotel 8:15am- Depart hotel for all day tour of Himeji Castle, Kaiyukan Aquarium, and the Sinsaibashi/Dotonbori area of Osaka. Lunch will be on your own. I m not sure where that will be just yet but most likely, around the Kaiyukan Aquarium. Dinner will also be on your own around the Dotonbori area which is famous for the large number of restaurants and street vendors in the area. 8:00pm Meet on the bridge by Glico Man (one of the most iconic symbols in the area) 8:15pm Depart Dotonbori for hotel 9:00pm Lights out 03/25 Sunday (BB/DD) 7:00am- Wake up 7:30am Breakfast at the hotel 8:15am Bring your luggage to the lobby. We will be mailing your luggage to our next hotel. It should be waiting for you at the hotel when we arrive there this evening. 8:30am Depart hotel for Odaiba, Tokyo When we get to Odaiba, we will be doina number of things such as: Palette Town, Diver City, Trick Art Museum, and maybe Decks 6:00pm Buffet Dinner in Odaiba 7:00pm Depart Odaiba for the Tokyo Metropolitan Hotel Ikebukuro. The evening plans are TBA but most likely Mr. Masaki will give you a quick tour of Ikebukuro and you will have some free time with your chaperones. 9:00pm Lights out 3/26 Monday (BB) 8:00am Wake up 9:00am Breakfast 9:45am Meet at designated meeting area for full day Tokyo City Tour 10:30am- Tsukiji Fish Market 11:45am Meet at designated meeting area and depart Tsukiji for Akihabara 12:00pm Arrive at Akihabara You will have two hours of time here with your chaperones. 2:00pm Meet at designated meeting spot and then depart for Ueno Station. 2:15pm Walk through Ueno Station and exit from the Park Gate (Koen Guchi) We will then walk through Ueno Park (and hopefully see Sakura) At the end of Ueno Park, we will go through a small area under/next to the train tracks called Okachimachi. You will have time to do omiyage shopping at Okachimachi and find food. 3:45pm Meet at designated meeting area and depart for Ikebukuro 4:15pm Arrive back at hotel Relax for a bit and get ready for the concert tonight. If you are hungry, someone will take you on a quick food run. You should probably get something to eat and a snack for later since we will not get back to the hotel until after 9pm. Please dress appropriately for this concert.
