2 BENEFITING CHARITE Empty tocking Fund News entinel WELCOME TO KNOXVILLE Big Heads Big Hearts The Gabe Benson Foundation The mission of the News entinel Empty tocking Fund (EF) is to provide food and toys to disadvantaged East Tennessee families during the holidays. This year, the 6th Annual Big Kahuna Wing Festival celebrates the creation of the Buffalo Wing, which has become a national food icon. Invented in 1964 at the world famous Anchor Bar by Teresa Bellisimo, Buffalo, NY is the official Home of the Chicken Wing. The popularity of the chicken wing has made it America s #1 appetizer. Last year alone over 20 billion wings were consumed by Americans, 1.25 billion on uper Bowl Weekend alone. In 2011, I traveled to Memphis to be a part of the local Hot Wing Festival. It was there that I discovered something that was missing from my hometown on the other side of the state. With all the wing lovers in the East Tennessee area why wasn t there a festival to celebrate Wings! Upon returning to Knoxville, I began the process of building a wing festival to raise money for local charities, asking the community for its support. That was over 5 years ago... over five years filled with 32,000 people, over 440,000 wings weighing more than 44,000 lbs, 160 different participating teams, and over $240,000 in charitable contributions. The Wingfest has drawn the attention of media throughout the region, including many appearances on WVLT, Live at 5@4, Good Morning Tennessee, and Daytime Tri-Cities, and was also the subject for a Resort and Lodges story. The festival also drew the attention of Tailgater Magazine which featured the event in its National magazine. The Big Kahuna Wing Festival has become one of the best culinary events in the region. Last year the festival drew over 8,000 attendees whom enjoyed over 100 different sauces from 40 different teams representing restaurants, cooking teams, businesses, and The University of Tennessee Culinary Institute. Attendees and visitors come from all over the region. All for the love of the Buffalo Wing and to raise money for charity. Thanks for joining us this Fathers Day Weekend as we celebrate the 6th Annual Big Kahuna Wing Festival. Matt Beeler Founder 2 BIG KAHUNA WING FETVIAL econd Harvest Food Bank is the East Tennessee region s largest hunger-relief charity; operating programs in 18 counties. The foodbank secures and distributes over 16 million pounds of food and grocery products annually through a network of over 500 partnering non-profit organizations such as food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters and schools. The UT Culinary Institute also offers a wide array of continuing education opportunities through its other programs, including degrees in Retail and Consumer ciences and in Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management. In addition, UT offers community cooking courses in dozens of topics related to food and wine. The Pellissippi tate Culinary Arts Institute is the result of a unique collaboration between Pellissippi tate and the University of Tennessee. In cooperation with UT Retail Hospitality and Tourism Department, the Pellissippi tate program offers advantages for students in terms of instruction, location and cost. The Big Heads Big Hearts Foundation was founded to honor and carry on the legacy of Gabe Benson. Gabe was one of the most caring and selfless men you could ever hope to know. His generosity and concernfor everyone he knew, anddidn't know, defined his life. As a devoted husband, father, son, brther, and friend; Gabe always put others before himself. To that end, Big Heads Big Hearts seeks to honor Gabe by providing charitable support for multiple organizations in the greater Knoxville community. Founded in 2013, the Big Kahuna Wing Festival has raised over $240,000 for our three charity groups and we are hopeful to make an even bigger impact in ADMIION $25 CHILDREN 8 AND UNDER FREE
