It isn t as sweet as peach juice nor as acidic as orange juice, but just right for a drink on a warm afternoon. Being a frugal fossil I set off one warm afternoon to find the cheapest mango juice I could find. But guess what? There is almost no such thing as mango juice in the average supermarket. What I did find is there is probably nothing as deceptively labeled as canned and bottled juices....in Search of Mango Juice continued What I did find is there is probably nothing as deceptively labeled as canned and bottled juices. The picture on the can or bottle usually bears no resemblance to the contents. For example, the picture on the V8 peach mango juice shows mangos, peaches and various other fruits. But the contents show the first three ingredients are sweet potatoes, carrots and yellow tomatoes. As for mango juice, it had less than 2% mango juice. I found the same deception in all of the 100% juice cans and bottles that I checked. For example, the V8 Fusion strawberry banana juice can showing strawberries and bananas lists in order, (if you can read the small print) sweet potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and beets (probably to give it a berry color), white grapes and apples before strawberries and bananas are mentioned, which means the amount of strawberries and banana puree is probably miniscule. But back to my search for mango juice and combinations thereof. I went to my local supermarket and looked for all the juice labels that included the word mango, either alone or in combination with other juice flavors. There were about ten of them but none of them contained more than 10% mango juice except for the cans labeled mango nectar, which contained 21% mango juice. Of course, perhaps mango tastes better mixed with other juices, but then why is it labeled as mango and not labeled truthfully as sweet potato, carrot, and tomato juice? I can only guess. But I expect it is a marketing ploy of some sort--perhaps sweet potatoes aren t pretty enough, or don t have the exotic appeal of mangos. I really don t know, but I did find the cheapest mango nectar was at DollarTree where $1 buys a quart carton of 21% mango juice and all that other stuff. Page 9
