4 STATE TIDBITS AND FACTS Capitol City The state capitol in Bismarck stands 19 stories and can be seen for miles. Population North Dakota s growing population is 683,932. Fargo is the largest city at 107,349, followed by Bismarck at 62,665. Nickname Peace Garden State was adopted by the 1957 Legislature. It represents the International Peace Garden that was built on the international boundary between North Dakota and the Canadian province of Manitoba. 5 Autumn in North Dakota Winter in North Dakota Agriculture and energy production, statewide Highest Point White Butte in Bowman County tops out at 3,506 feet above sea level. Lowest Point Pembina County in northeast North Dakota has the lowest point in the state at 792 feet above sea level. Average January Temperature Average temperatures range from 2 degrees Fahrenheit in the northeast to 17 in the southwest. Average July Temperatures July is the warmest month, averaging 67 degrees Fahrenheit in the northeast to 73 in parts of the south. Highest Temperature 121 degrees at Steele on July 6, 1936 Lowest Temperature Minus 60 at Parshall on February 15, Four Seasons Winter (December-early March) is the season for snowmobiling, ice fishing, ice skating and hockey. Expect an average temperature of 24 degrees Fahrenheit (-4 Celsius). Spring (Late March-mid June) is a time of rapid change. The snowpack melts rapidly in late March or early April, the fertile soil dries and field preparations begin. Expect an average temperature of 52 degrees (11 Celsius). Summer (Mid June-mid September) is a perfect time in North Dakota. The days are warm, sometimes even hot, but nights are cool enough for a restful sleep. Expect an average temperature of 82 degrees (28 Celsius). Fall (Mid September-November) in North Dakota is a beautiful time of year. The warm days are perfect for enjoying such activities as completing the harvest, fall festivals and outdoor adventure. Expect an average temperature of 66 degrees (19 Celsius). 9 LEGENDS OF NORTH DAKOTA Legends can be famous people about whom stories have been handed down from generation to generation. There are many stories about Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux Chief Sitting Bull and Lt Col. George Custer, both of whom experienced the Dakota Territory in different ways. Before the Dakota Territory, it was home to many tribal people and fur traders and provided shelter for a crew of explorers who were sent to discover the lands of the Louisiana Purchase. Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and the Corps of Discovery made friends with Charbonneau, his young wife, Sakakawea, and Chief Sheheke, or White Coyote. Stories of Theodore Roosevelt in the North Dakota Badlands live on. After leaving the Presidency, Theodore Roosevelt said, I never would have been President if it had not been for my experiences in North Dakota. Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Awards The award recognizes present or former North Dakotans who have achieved national recognition in their field of expertise. Recipients are chosen by the Governor and their portraits are on display in the Capitol building.
