1 Central More than 175 lakes in SD Place your own photo here! My fishing trip The Missouri River runs through the Central region of South Dakota and is a very important part of our state. In fact, Lewis and Clark traveled right along the Missouri as they made their way through South Dakota 200 years ago. Not only is the river useful for fishing, boating, and camping, but it also divides the state in more ways than one. East of the river the landscape is smoother with gentle hills and lakes. Farming, or raising crops, is very popular here. To the west, the rugged Badlands begin and raising herds of animals, or ranching, is more common. 40

3 Ipswich South Dakota home of Yellowstone Trail Edmunds County Courthouse harvest sunset Ipswich was the home of Joe Parmley, The Father of the Yellowstone Trail. In 1912, the Yellowstone Trail crossed South Dakota and was one of the first transcontinental highways (trans-kon-tih-nen-tul hy-ways) [page 103] in the Northern states. It stretched from Massachusetts to Washington, and many people considered it the best way to get to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, even though it was made of dirt! Parmley founded the trail, and the first 100 miles of it are named in his honor. Because of the success of this trail, many other roads and highways were built by the government for travelers. 42

5 Mobridge South Dakota fishing for walleye Mobridge is the envy of every angler. It sits on the shores of the Missouri River s Lake Oahe and hosts thousands of fishermen for tournaments and fishing adventures. Sitting Bull monument Fort Manuel On the opposite shore you ll find the grave of Sitting Bull, a great Lakota chief and holy man. Sitting Bull united his people for survival and tried to resist the American military effort forcing Indians onto reservations. Although his effort failed, Lakota people remember and honor Sitting Bull for his visions about General George Custer s defeat at Little Big Horn and for a dream about his own death. 7 Faulkton South Dakota Happy Times Carousel Faulkton is known as the Carousel City because of the Happy Times Carousel, which operates on Wednesdays and weekends. The carousel was built in 1925, and it still gives free rides to children. Pickler Mansion Faulk County Courthouse After our carousel ride, we can tour the Pickler mansion. This mansion was home to John A. Pickler, South Dakota s first U.S. Congressman. Susan B. Anthony and former Presidents Grover Cleveland and Theodore Roosevelt were guests in the Pickler home. Today you can still see original furniture from the late 1800s, a 2,500 volume library, and 19 other rooms in this 1882 Victorian prairie mansion. 46

9 Highmore South Dakota Hyde County Courthouse wind energy towers Highmore is home to a world of wind energy (wind en-er-jee) [page 103]. The South Dakota Wind Energy Center is the largest wind energy field in South Dakota and is located just 10 miles south of Highmore. Here, many huge wind towers spin out electricity. On breezy days the blades on the towers rotate quickly, creating energy. Each of these blades is more than 110 feet long! The wind field near Highmore can produce about 40 megawatts of power that s enough for 14,000 South Dakota homes! 11 Chamberlain South Dakota Highway 16 bridge old-time park Akta Lakota Museum The historic Highway 16 bridge connects Chamberlain with its neighbor, Oacoma (Oh-ah-ko-mah). The Missouri River flows under the bridge, providing many outdoor activities for visitors, like the Lewis and Clark Race on the River and beautiful major resorts. Next, let s visit the Akta Lakota (Ak-tah Lah-koh-tah) Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about Lakota culture. Akta Lakota means to honor the people. The museum was founded in 1991 and is considered a living museum because it not only presents the Lakota people s history, but also shows current art displays. 50

13 Platte South Dakota pleasant Platte It s possible in Platte! A mix-up on a map gave this town the wrong name in the early 1900s. The town was supposed to be named for Bernard Pratte, a fur trader, who also had the nearby creek named in his honor. However, the town of Pratte was mistakenly written as Platte on a map. The name stuck! Today Platte is an ideal stop for people who love to hunt and fish. The Platte-Winner Bridge, completed in 1966, marks another key point where Eastern South Dakota connects to Western South Dakota by bridging the gap of the Missouri River. 15 Presho South Dakota bales of hay Presho was established in 1905 and is known as The Pride of the Prairie. It is best known for hunting, fishing and amber waves of grain. sunflower field Hay production helped the town of Presho grow. During World War I, heavy rains made the land very fertile, and farmers produced huge amounts of hay in Presho. The town shipped about 1,000 rail cars of hay each year starting in This made Presho the second largest prairie hay shipping center in the United States! Presho pride Today farmland makes up about 91 percent of the land in Lyman County. Farmers near Presho produce much of the state s wheat, sunflowers, and hay. 54

17 Rest Area Pierre Capitol Building Pierre Facts: Vietnam War Memorial South Dakota s lawmakers meet in Pierre from January to March and vote on new laws, change old laws, and decide how the state s money should be spent. South Dakota has 35 state senators and 70 representatives. They make up the legislature (lej-is-lay-cher) [page 101]. At the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center Museum, you can see a life-size Lakota tipi (tee-pee) [page 103] and a sod house. railroad bridge In the summer of 2011, the Missouri River flooded, with water levels 4-8 feet above normal, causing several thousand people to evacuate their homes in the Pierre area for two months. 56

From quilting, to beading, to custom knifemaking, artists here express Lakota culture in a variety of ways. Native American mural More than 62,000 American Indians live in South Dakota. Most of them are Dakota, Lakota, or Nakota people, also known collectively as Sioux. The Sioux have customs that hold the forces of nature holy and value the balance among all things in the universe. Eagle Butte The rich culture and heritage of the Sioux maintain this balance of life through the cardinal virtues of wisdom, bravery, fortitude, and generosity. 58
