1 Department Established 1987 This is an exciting time for the Colerain Township Parks & Services Department! Colerain Township currently has a compliment of 11 parks for residents of all ages to enjoy. Since 2002, we have added 4 new parks and renovated 5 existing parks. We have increased from total park acres to acres! In 2011 we will begin developing our newest addition Wert Park thanks to the generous donation of 10 acres of land! 4 Township Easter Egg Hunt Ft Dunlap Encampment Arbor Day Celebration Free Sizzling Summer Series in Colerain Park (Movies, Concerts, Teen Nights, Shakespeare) Maintain fire security systems for all parks, park vehicles/equipment, Government Complex, and Skyline Community Center Coordinate community service projects for Scouts, students, and others in need of community service hours Coordinate recycling programs including annual Residential Recycle Day and Christmas Tree Recycling Coordinate Legacy Tree and Memorial Bench Programs Township chemical application & mosquito control Sport Field scheduling including 12 baseball fields and 9 soccer fields Summer Youth Activities Program (25th year in 2011) Assist with special non-township run events held on Township properties such as Relay for Life, Collegiate Cross Country meets, and various memorial walks Special Township projects as directed by the Board of Trustees Assist the Colerain Community Association with its beautification efforts including their annual Great American Clean-up effort Assist the Friends of the Great Miami and Rivers Unlimited with its Great Miami River Clean-up events Development and maintenance of the Township s Emerald Ash Borer program Research and obtain grants from outside funding partners Partner with Hamilton County Park District in the development/maintenance of our meadows and prairie grass sites

Park Amenities: Megaland Playground, built by the community 1 basketball court 1 sand volleyball court 2 state of the art baseball fields with concession stand 3 restroom facilities, 1 serving as a FEMA funded tornado/severe weather shelter 4 picnic shelters, available to rent for $70 residents/$80 non-residents 1 amphitheater that will seat upwards of 600 people, available to rent for $200 residents/$250 non-residents; additional equipment is also available to rent 1 mile walk path

6 Several smaller play equipment for children 2 horseshoe pits and 2 corn hole courts Home to the Free Sizzling Summer Events that occur every Friday of June, July and August in Colerain Park Home of the Township s Summer Camp for residents ages 5-13 Park Amenities: Boundless Playground, funded by CVS/Caremark, that is fully handicapped accessible 1 spray water park with 13 water features 1 basketball court 2 state of the art baseball fields 1 skatepark with two bowls and several street features 2 restroom facilities 3 picnic shelters available to rent for $70 residents/$80 non-residents ¾ mile walk path, including a natural trail winding through 4 acres of natural woods

8 Park Amenities: 1 mile of river frontage with a canoe access ramp 4 NCAA regulation size baseball fields, two with grass infields, all with irrigation 18 basket disc golf course 1.2 miles of paved walking trail and 1 mile of primitive trails winding through natural wooded areas 1 picnic shelter available to rent for $70 residents/$80 non-residents 1 playground with simulated rock climbing wall Ecolab, Rain Garden and pervious parking surface Glacial stream The land is reported to be the site of Fort Coleraine, the scene of a fierce Indian attack on the first Colerain settlers in the 1790's. Many headstones at each of the cemeteries are in need of repair, but costs to do the repairs are very costly. One repair of a Civil War Veteran s headstone is planned for Additional repairs for 2011 include replacing the bridge over a stream separating the two sections of Huston Cemetery, trim select trees and clean-up and chip several branches that have fallen during the winter months. Gravestone Inscriptions and Cemetery Records of Colerain Township, Ohio is available to purchase for $20, but generates minimal income each year. Staffing: All seasonal positions: 1 Director, 1 Assistant Director, 6 Counselors Established in 1986, the Colerain Township Summer Camp Program is a program for residents with children between 5-13 years of age. The program is directed by Krista (Thiel) Lovewell, a middle school teacher in Beavercreek, Ohio who holds a Master of Eduction degree. Krista is assisted by a dedicated staff of teachers and college students. The program runs from June through the start of school in August at Colerain Park. There are two program sessions, Monday through Friday. The morning session focuses on recreational games and the afternoon session focuses on crafts. Children are welcome to attend both sessions, but they must be picked up in between the two

13 sessions. Attendance is not mandatory; you are free to bring your child(ren) when it is convenient to you. Cancellations will occasionally occur due to weather conditions (rain, excessive heat, etc.). In addition to the regular daily game and craft sessions, the children have additional opportunities to enjoy the summer! The group usually goes on one field trip a week and typically one large over-night trip each summer.. The Park program holds movies in the park on the second and fourth Friday nights of June, July and August (these free movies are also open to the general public). The Parks & Services Department is in charge of organizing, fund raising, setting-up, running, taking-down and cleaningup the grounds after the Township s two premier events alongside one community volunteer, one elected official, and one independent contractor (stage & entertainment). 4th of July Spectacular July 4, 2011, 6 PM until the conclusion of the fireworks which begin at 10 PM The 4th of July Spectacular is in its 14th year and is the only major fireworks display for public viewing near our community. The event, considered one the best shows in the area, draws over 30,000 people annually. The event offers the following: Morning 5K Run/Walk

14 Free musical entertainment Free parking Free shuttle service Several food vendors Free activities for children Fireworks Taste of Colerain August 12, 13, & 14, 2011 The Taste of Colerain is in its 22nd year and provides a celebration of food from area restaurants and entertainment for the entire family. This three day event allows participants not only to sample new cuisine, but also provides area businesses with the opportunity to introduce their services in a relaxed and informal atmosphere The Parks & Services Department also hosts: Residential Recycle Day Christmas Tree Recycling Memorial Day Ceremonies Township Easter Egg Hunt Arbor Day Celebration Fort Dunlap Encampment Free Sizzling Summer Series in Colerain Park (Movies, Concerts, Shakespeare in the Park)

15 The Parks and Services Department was created not only to maintain parks but to also support the operations and facilities of other departments. We also partner with local entities to provide assistance in their efforts to enhance the quality of life in Colerain Township. As a service department, we not only conduct the duties described in the previous pages, but we also handle: Township building and grounds maintenance; organize community service projects; coordinate Township recycling; work on the conservation of Township greenspace; maintain many portions of the Township's web site; snow removal from all Township properties; landscaping at the Administration Complex; take on and assist the extra tasks of the other Township departments so that they are not pulled away from their primary duties, such as fixing Fire Department grass ruts, Senior Center event set-ups, assisting in internal maintenance for other departments, to name just a few things. zoning inspections and abatements gateway beautification and maintenance partner with Hamilton County Parks in meadow and prairie maintenance and restoration partner with private business to provide community special events
