1 2018 Static Water Level Report
2 2018 Static Water Level Summary LLNRD staff collected readings on 425 irrigation and monitoring wells during the spring static water level collection in Samples were collected during a period from March 12 to April 2. When compared to the previous year, 105 of the sites had a lower water level than what was measured in The average amount of decline was feet with the two largest declines being found in Wheeler (-10.06) and Rock County (-6.86). Of the wells measured, 29 had a zero-change reading from last year and 288 had a higher water level reading from The average change of the higher water level readings was 1.22 feet. The largest increases were found in wells in and around the area of Platte and Boone County near the town of St. Edward. When comparing the data to 1982 readings as per the Groundwater Management Plan, many of the wells measured today were not available. However, 180 of the wells did have readings at the time and still prove invaluable for this comparison. The largest decreases continue to be found in south-central Custer and northern Buffalo County. The largest decline from 1982 was over 10 feet located in southwestern Custer County south of the South Loup River between Arnold and Callaway. Conversely, there has been some major increases in water level in Valley County, on the magnitude of 30+ feet. The maps included with this report showcase some of these changes as well as the 5-year and 10-year water level transitions to compare to more recent measurements. These maps were developed using a GIS Interpolation method called inverse distance weighted (IDW). IDW assumes that wells close to one another have more similarities than those that are further apart. The area between two measured points is assumed a value based on the trends calculated on all other wells in proximity. In the instances where there are bullseyes in the projected water level, a single point or a few points within close proximity have readings that depart greatly from the overall area trends. IDW assumes that the water level being modeled is driven by local variation.
