3 PRESERVE WHAT S PRECIOUS Preservation Parks protects what matters the natural and historic features of Delaware County. The park district is committed to preserving our natural areas: places where wildlife can find what they need to live, and places where people can find an oasis of quiet in the midst of a busy life. Delaware County continues to be among the fastest growing communities in Ohio, with new housing developments and commercial centers filling in open spaces. Funded by a voter-approved tax levy, along with grants and donations, Preservation Parks protects beautiful areas in the county, which become interlaced with walking trails that meander through woodlands, prairies and wetlands. Visitors don t hear the hum of traffic or view the bright lights of a parking area. Instead, they hear bird song and frogs in the spring, insects in the summer, and the rustle of wind through the leaves. They experience nature on a personal level and immerse themselves and their families in places where memories, and connections with the natural world, are made. OUR MISSION: To protect and conserve the natural and historic features of Delaware County and to inspire outdoor exploration and learning. 1

4 NOVEMBER 2017 WE RE ON THE BALLOT Preservation Parks will be on the November 7 ballot, with a renewal levy plus additional. Eighty-percent of the park district s funding comes from property taxes; that income allows Preservation Parks to create and maintain parks, build trails, picnic shelters and other amenities, improve habitat and provide educational programs. WHAT HAVE WE COMPLETED? Since the last levy in 2008, we have: Provided education programming for thousands of school children (9,000 in 2016) and members of the public (7,000 in 2016). Opened three new parks (Shale Hollow, Gallant Farm and River Run), and expanded Hogback Ridge, Shale Hollow and Emily Traphagen. Purchased 225 acres of land for future parks and increased protected lands from 965 to 1,410 acres. Provided canoe/kayak access to the Olentangy River at River Run Park. Built new hiking trails, a picnic shelter and playground, new restrooms, a fishing pond and pier, sledding hills and much more. Created natural play areas in four parks. Completed segments of the Ohio to Erie Multi-use Trail. Paved drives and parking areas for easier access. Added wetlands and prairies, and planted thousands of native trees. Conducted invasive plant management on more than 300 acres. WHAT S ON THE BALLOT? A 0.6-mill renewal plus 0.3-mill additional levy on November 7. The current levy provides approximately $3.57 million a year, with additional funding coming from a combination of grants and state funding, along with a small amount from donations, program fees and shelter rentals. The levy was approved by voters in November, 2008; it will expire at the end of Collections on the new levy, if approved, will start in The current 0.6-mill levy costs a property owner about $19 per year, per $100,000 valuation of his or her home. The new levy (renewal plus the additional) will cost a homeowner $28.86 each year, per $100,000 in home valuation, and will provide an additional $2.6 million to the park district annually. 5 WHAT ARE OUR PLANS? CONSERVATION Protect natural areas and provide places where people can connect with nature, while protecting habitats and water resources. Open a new 230-acre park along Bale Kenyon Road in Orange Township, with trails, a year-round reservable picnic shelter, restrooms and access to Alum Creek for fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Restore the Bicentennial Barn on the property for community rentals. Open a new 115-acre park on Pollock Road in Delaware Township, with a year-round reservable picnic shelter, trails, wetland, fishing pond and sledding hill. Restore, establish and increase wetland, prairie and forest habitats. Continue to remove invasive species that threaten our native plant and animal communities. EXPLORATION Expand the multi-use trail system in Delaware County, including the Ohio-to-Erie Trail. Initiate a multi-use trail grant program to assist townships and municipalities with planning, engineering, and/or constructing connector trails. Construct a 1.5-mile multi-use trail from Smith Park in the city of Delaware to Gallant Woods, pending easement approval. EDUCATION Expand summer camp opportunities and programs for all ages. Create special exhibits and programs related to an annual natural theme. Expand field experience grants to schools and develop grade-level nature and agricultural curricula.
