Advent in Mondsee has long enjoyed its enchanting backdrop with the advent market in front of the Basilica, and its traditional Christmas market in the cloister of the former monastery. The centrepiece of the Mondsee Advent : the gothic cloister The centrepiece of the Mondsee Advent, is the weather-protected gothic cloister of the former Benedictine monastery, where every weekend around 30 artists and craftsmen present their gift ideas. Local products and handicrafts are the main focus here. As is the Crib Display in the chapter house, a fascinating attraction year after year. A regular participant is the Model Makers Advent. Where, in addition to the traditional Christmas LEGO railway with city themes, there are cult themes such as Star Wars, knights, racing car track, and other amazing sights all from LEGO. Against the snowy backdrop of the Falkenstein, Schafberg, and Zwölferhorn ships bring visitors over the sparkling lake to the towns of St. Gilgen, Strobl, and St. Wolfgang. Even from the water, the magic of these beautifully decorated places is apparent. The 9m high advent candle in St. Gilgen, the 6m comet in Strobl and the 19m high floating ORF peace lantern in St. Wolfgang are all regular landmarks of the Wolfgangsee Advent. All visitors - old and young alike - can expect a varied mix of local arts and crafts, culinary specialities from the region, and authentic folk music. A living crib, an ice skating area, an angel studio with post office, an advent craft shop for children, a floating punch stand, a quaint wooden lodge, and 150 advent stands provide for both contemplation and fun alike. A very special experience is promised by a ride on the Schafbergbahn Advent steam train to 1,015m above sea level. When it s dark in the village every Wednesday from the electric lights are turned off and the St. Wolfgang Advent market is illuminated by the glow of hundreds of candles, torches, lanterns and fire pits.
