3 SCHAFBERGBAHN SCHAFBERGBAHN FULL STEAM AHEAD, ALL THE WAY TO THE SUMMIT! The Schafbergbahn is Austria s steepest cog railway. Since 1893, it has run from St. Wolfgang to the top of the 1,783 meters-high Schafberg. From the end of April until November, modern and vintage cog locomotives chug up the mountain, making the ride an absolutely unforgettable experience. With its striking peak, the Schafberg is one of the most beautiful lookout mountains in Austria. All around are the glistening lakes of the Salzkammergut, while your eyes roam from the Bohemian Forest in the north to the Alps in the south. After the ride, a refreshment stop at Hotel Schafbergspitze is always worthwhile. It has been enthroned at the summit since 1882 and is Austria s oldest mountain hotel. The train travels through meadows and forests, from St. Wolfgang across the provincial border between Upper Austria and Salzburg, to the Dorneralm siding (elev. 1,015 m). Here, the vintage locomotives have to refill their water tanks. The journey then continues to the Schafbergalm stop (1,363 m), which was renovated by the Salzkammergutbahn GmbH true to the historical original, and now looks like new. For the last ten minutes up to the Schafbergspitze mountain station (1,732 m), the SchafbergBahn once again huffs & puffs steeply uphill. Even during the ride itself, the views are absolutely unique. General Information For groups of 20 or more, reservations are required. Dogs riding on the ferries or cog railway must be muzzled and on a leash. Prams cannot be transported on the SchafbergBahn. For safety reasons, children ages 4 and up must have their own seat. The trains use diesel- as well as steam locomotives. INTERESTING FACTS The 124-year-old steam-powered cog locomotives are some of the oldest in the world that are still in operation. Since fewer and fewer businesses have the necessary expertise, almost all repairs are done at the workshop in St. Wolfgang. Each journey requires about four hours of preparation time. A trip up and down the mountain consumes about 500 kg of coal and 3,000 l of water

IIn 1873, the paddle steamer Kaiser Franz Josef I was launched. This 33 meters-long ship with its powerful paddle-wheels was regarded as a major technological achievement in its day. Now as then, this photogenic vintage ship shuttles between the towns of St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen, and is one of the fleet s main attractions. The Wolfgangsee ferries also bring passengers closer to the magical surroundings of the Wolfgangsee: St. Gilgen, birthplace of Mozart s mother, St. Wolfgang, home of the White Horse Inn and the SchafbergBahn, as well as Strobl, with its delightful promenade. Advent steam train put on by the SchafbergBahn Every year, the cog railway chugs through the winter forest up to the second siding (above the Dorneralm) at 1,015 m above sea level. Thursday to Sunday on Advent weekends (timetable may change due to weather conditions). Info about the timetable and prices during winter 2017/18 can be found on the Internet at HIKING WITH THE SCHAFBERGBAHN St. Wolfgang via Dorneralm up to the Schafberg, 1,783 m About a 3 ½ hr. hike. From the church along Sternallee and past the Försterhof, until a path leading to the Achinger café branches off to the right. Now continue to the Dorneralm (1 ½ hours), then through forest to the Schafbergalm (stop for the cog railway and inn). From here, marked path No. 20 crosses the train tracks twice, before taking you steeply uphill through open terrain to the so-called Krapfl, and from there more gently until you reach the summit. BEER & DINE ON WOLFGANGSEE HIKING WITH THE WOLFGANGSEE FERRIES 1 Along an old pilgrimage path to the church on the Falkenstein On this ancient pilgrimage path between St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang (taking ca. 3 hrs.), hikers discover imposing places of legend and spiritual power. For families and children, too, this hike promises lots of variety: ring the church bell and make a wish, edge between the rocks... The shorter variant between the Fürberg and Ried-Falkenstein ferry landings is recommended with small children. Once at your destination, a ship will carry you comfortably back to your starting point. 2 St. Wolfgang s Parish Church The cherished goal of pilgrims for centuries has been St. Wolfgang s Parish Church, with its world-famous altar by Michael Pacher. The church is only a few minutes walk from the St. Wolfgang Markt ferry landing. 3 From Strobl around the Bürglstein to St. Wolfgang This easy, ca. 6 km hike takes you on a picturesque walk around the Bürglstein. The path affords beautiful views of Strobl. The last section to St. Wolfgang takes you on a foot- and bike path next to the road. From the St. Wolfgang Markt landing, enjoy a relaxing ride back to Strobl. They say, a good beer needs good water. Well, give it a try for yourself: On magnificent Lake Wolfgangsee, on board the MS Salzburg. The 10 meters-high lookout platform in Blinklingmoos Nature Sanctuary is especially popular with kids. Distance: ca. 4 km. Time: ca. 1 hr., with info boards along the way.
