1 Uniting Heaven & Earth in Sacred Peru May 6 17, 2018 Day 1 Sunday, May 6 ARRIVE IN LIMA Today we arrive in Lima, spending the night in a charming Miraflores hotel near the Pacific Ocean to relax and prepare for our morning departure to Nazca. Overnight in Miraflores, a suburb of Lima. (No Meals) Day 2 Monday, May 7 MIRAFLORES to PARACAS Peru has a rich history that most travelers are not privy unless they follow the path less traveled. Today we are fortunate to follow one such path as we venture to Paracas to peek at the pre-inca Paracas culture! The oldest remains of this culture date back to 5000 BC; however, most of the remains found in the communal burial site are from BCE. This is one of the earliest known complex societies in South America that laid the foundation for later Andean societies, including the Inca. The Paracas National Reserve protects the historical and cultural heritage of these ancient indigenous peoples as well as the unique marine ecosystem which we visit tomorrow. In the Julio Tello Museum, we learn the evolutionary process of this sophisticated culture that mummified and buried their dead in a conical textile-wrapped bundles to support their ascension into the afterlife. Their intricate and colorful textiles communicated their native beliefs and the journeys into the spirit world and are considered the best of all ancient cultures. Paracas people were exceptional craftsmen and produced exquisite stone clubs, obsidian knives, rattles, painted pottery, hammered gold jewelry, complex textiles and other sacred objects. Their economic activity was based on agriculture and fishing. The agrarian activity required the intelligent handling of the waters on deserts leading to successful irrigation, water management and farming tactics. Remarkably, their knowledge of medicine was advanced with some of the remains showing the effects of surgical operations to the brain through which the patient survived! Curiously, this culture deformed skulls while the subject was alive creating a lengthened head. 2 Day 3 Tuesday, May 8 PARACAS to NAZCA via ICA Paracas is a few short hours south of Lima where the desert and the sea come together in spectacular landscapes! The name Paracas comes from the Quechua word para-ako meaning sand falling like rain or sandstorm. By now, we understand why it got its name! Our adventure continues as we don boats to explore the Ballestas Islands. The cliffs that fringe the beaches are teeming with life giving this area the name Poor Man s Galapagos! Believe me, it does rival the Galapagos with its extensive variety of birds, sea lions, turtles, dolphins and even penguins. It is considered one of the richest and most uncommon ecosystems in the world! As we approach the craggy rock formations, they appear to be vibrating. Upon closer look, the moving surface is a solid rock face covered in animal life pelicans, sea stars, boobies, sea lions, penguins and a multitude of other birds. All this animal life leaves a massive amount of guano behind! During some of the lean times of Peruvian history, this guano was exported in huge quantities and helped keep Peru afloat! This is a good day to wear our hats!! In route to the islands, we can see the famed Candelabra Geoglyph an enormous hillside etching of mysterious origins. Standing at almost 500 feet high and 150 feet wide, no one knows who created it, when, why or what it signifies.but theories abound! What s your guess? Is it connected to the Nazca Lines? To aliens? Jorge Luis Delgado surely has some insight here! Not only is this area seeped in important ancient history, but also in more recent history. The Bay of Paracas holds special historical significance to the Peruvians it is here where Jose de San Martin landed with the liberation forces and began the campaign for independence from Spanish rule in the early 1800 s culminating in the proclamation of independence in From Paracas, we continue to travel through the coastal region of Central Peru - a land of exotic animals, mysterious mummies, historic wineries and alien desert landscapes arriving in Huacachina oasis in time for lunch. After lunch, we go on to Ica the Land of the Sun an important agricultural region for cotton, grapes, asparagus, avocado, mango, olives and more. The picturesque colonial town is not our main draw, but the unique Dr. Cabrera Stone Museum is. In 1966, Peruvian physician Javier Cabrera Darquea was presented with a stone for payment that had a carved picture of a fish, which Dr. Cabrera believed to be of an extinct species. Intrigued by Peruvian prehistory, he began collecting more. Interestingly, his father had begun a collection of these stones in the 1930 s. The Museum houses more than 11,000 enigmatic carved andesite stones depicting themes ranging from man interacting with dinosaurs and performing complex medical procedures (brain surgeries, heart transplants, genetic experimentation, etc.), to depictions of the Earth's continents as they were millions of years ago. In Cabrera s book, The Message of the Engraved Stones of Ica, he discusses his theories of the origins and meaning of the stones. He argues that the stones show that man is at least 405 million years old and for what he calls gliptolithic man, humans from another planet, and that Through the transplantation of cognitive codes to highly intelligent primates, the men from outer space created new men on earth. 3 this is very controversial! What if these stones ARE an encyclopedia of ancient knowledge and history?? We gather more momentum for pondering what is true as we venture towards Nazca - home of the alien skulls and land of 1,000 mummies. If we have time, we walk the Palpa Lines or visit the Chicchitara Petroglyphs. The Palpa Lines include more than 600 geoglyphs enormous geometric drawings like the Nazca Lines - scratched on the surface of the ground between 600 BC 100 BC. According to recent archaeological studies, these lines are older than the Nazca Lines and represent a series of human and animal zoomorphic figures. Overnight in Nazca. (B, L) Day 4 Wednesday, May 9 NAZCA to MIRAFLORES We awaken in Nazca country excited to fly high above the Earth to view some of the greatest archeological enigmas in the world! The Nazca Lines are geoglyphs that depict living creatures, stylized plants, imaginary beings and geometric figures. These figures transformed the land into a highly symbolic, ritual and social/cultural landscape. They are an extraordinary example of the magical-religious world of the ancient Peruvian societies. Some believe the lines were created by the Nazca culture (500 BC 500 AD). But were they? The purpose of the lines continues to be debated. Some theorize they were created for the gods to look upon them from above, while others suggest they were some sort of astrological calendar to aid in planting and harvesting or pathways for important ceremonial processions. today! After viewing the lines, we explore more of Nazca and its culture. Nazca was made up of local chiefdoms and regional centers of power centered around Cahuachi a non-urban ceremonial site of earthwork pyramid mounds used for ceremonial and religious purposes. Here they feasted, performed rituals and worshipped powerful nature gods related to agriculture, water and fertility. Heavily influenced by Paracas, the Nazca society is characterized by beautiful polychrome pottery, technically complex textiles, and elaborate irrigation and aqueduct systems. 4 Day 5 Thursday, May 10 LIMA to URUBAMBA via CUSCO In the morning, we transfer to the Lima airport to catch our flight to Cusco and continue our exploration of the Incan Peru. The Incas consider Cusco the Naval of the Universe and Center of the Incan Empire! What a powerful place to resume our journey of uniting Heaven and Earth! At the Cusco airport, we are greeted and transferred to our home away from home in Urubamba. We shed our travel dust as we get settled and relax into this amazing and peaceful sanctuary. When ready, we meet for a late lunch and begin our journey into the heart and soul of the Incas. Jorge and his staff greet us with an Andean Welcoming Ceremony that illustrates how sacred the Sacred Valley is! Our hearts open wide allowing our soul to prepare for our next steps. We conclude our day with gratitude and focus our attention on our intentions. Take careful note of the dreams that come your way! Overnight in Urubamba at the Taypikala Hotel. (B, Late L) Day 6 Friday, May 11 MORAY & MARAS After a peaceful sleep, we awaken to the beckoning call of the sacred Urubamba River cascading through the valley. As the mountains surrounding us expose themselves to the morning sun, we begin our own awakening process allowing our bodies to synch up with the rhythm of Pacha Mama. Later, Jorge leads us through Incan ritual and guided practices that can help in this process. In the afternoon, we venture to the sacred terraces of Moray and Maras. In Moray, we find three sets of huge natural depressions that have been sculpted into deep terraces. Since there is a large difference in temperature from the top to the bottom, different climatic conditions exist affecting the crops on each terrace. Thus, it is believed these terraces served as an Inca agricultural experiment station. However, as Jorge says, this is only ONE aspect! For us, these circles represent the Cosmic Spiral - the expansion of our essence from our center. We work with Earth energy to connect to the womb of Mother Earth, to release our Hucha (heavy energy) and one-by-one to put our message into the Cosmos to live fully in this life. Below Moray are the Maras Salt Terraces where the Incas cleverly built terraces to capture the flow of a salty spring that emerges from the hillside. During the dry season, the water evaporates, leaving salt that can be harvested and sold. Salt is considered the great neutralizer. It can help cleanse, heal and balance energy while repelling negative vibrations. Besides acting as a potent purifier, salt can help attract positive energy and aid in manifestation. As the light is reflected across the terraces and refracted by the salt crystals, the effect is quite stunning reminding us of our unique light inside that is spilling out into the world lighting a path for those to come. 5 Day 7 Saturday, May 12 KILLARUMIYOC This morning our inner light rouses us out of our slumber. It becomes stronger each day as our connection with Father Sun, the Apus (mountains) and other living spirits of the Andes deepens. Today we venture to Killarumiyoc to meet additional spirits important to the Incan culture that help us unite heaven on Earth. Killarumiyoc is home to a carved lunar calendar and temple dedicated to Mama Quilla the Incan moon goddess. According to Incan lore, Mama Quilla was Inti s (Father Sun) sister and wife - the feminine side of the Universe who influenced the tides and the growth and fertilization of plants. Here Q ero Elders join us in an ancient offering of gratitude to Mama Quilla and Pacha Mama (Mother Earth) thanking them for all they have contributed to our lives. Overnight in Urubamba at the Taypikala Hotel. (B, Picnic L) Day 8 Sunday, May 13 CHINCHERO Today we are off to the mythical birthplace of the rainbow Chinchero. Rainbows speak directly to our heart and soul, filling us with awe and energies of liquid love. They are the symbol of following our hearts desire and purpose. This is a perfect opportunity to remember our intentions as we travel up, up, up to 12,500 feet to this ancient Incan village! Chinchero, framed by the Cordillera Vilcabamba mountains and the snow-capped peak of Salkantay, was a country resort for Inca Tupac Yupanqui, son of Pachacutec. Under his direction, aqueducts and terraces for farming and agricultural purposes were built in the mountainside making Chinchero an agricultural mecca and one of the main population centers for the entire Sacred Valley. Today its soil is some of the richest and fertile in the valley producing excellent crops that stock the Sunday Chinchero Market. We wander through the market to watch the locals trade vegetables, herbs and potatoes for other goods like matches, oranges and medicines. We are transported back in time to when the Incan ancestors in the highlands depended on trade. This market is also an artesian market where we can practice haggling for Peruvian goods such as woven blankets, silver jewelry, alpaca sweaters, musical instruments, artwork and other goods. Chinchero is also an active traditional weaving center. This art was almost lost until a group of local women revitalized it. We are introduced to this traditional weaving process complete with natural dyes and then are served a traditional Andean lunch. Interlaced among the terraces are the remains of the Incan palace, megalithic carved rocks, walls and even a stone throne a great display of Incan architecture. As we walk around the ancient city, listen carefully to hear sounds of a lost civilization, then sit amongst the remains and participate in an Incan gratitude ceremony! 6 Day 9 Monday, May 14 URUBAMBA to MACHU PICCHU Early this morning, we catch a scenic train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes to continue our pilgrimage to the famous Crystal City of the Incas - Machu Picchu! We arrive midmorning and after settling into our hotel and enjoying a nutritious lunch, we board the bus that snakes up the mountain to Machu Picchu the citadel in the sky. Our timing is perfect as the morning crowds are dissipating leaving us to fully embody the sacredness of this Seven Wonder of the World. With great anticipation, we ask permission of the guardians of Machu Picchu the Puma, Condor and Light of Spirits to enter the sacred city. We ask to expand our spirits with the qualities of the Father and the Mother Munay (love), Llancay (service), and Yachay (wisdom). Upon entering this Wonder of the World, we sense the vibrant community, which by embodying these qualities, could thrive high above the river valley below. Soon we know, without a doubt, why it is included in this prestigious list of world wonders! After a special heart awakening entrance, we explore the Seven Places of Power and intertwine meditation and ceremonies to connect us fully to the energetic power of Machu Picchu. Every invocation made at Machu Picchu is amplified to incalculable proportions due to the stone complex's high voltage magnetic focal point. So, be sure and express fully your intentions! (B, L, D) Day 10 Tuesday, May 15 MACHU PICCHU to URUBAMBA Before sunrise, we return to the Lost City of the Incas for a spectacular ceremonial meeting with Father Sun as he rises above the mountaintop and greets us with his brilliant light. We participate in a special sunrise celebration and receive the first light into our hearts; merging our energies with this sacred site and deepening our understanding of who we are as Children of the Sun. Enjoy the rest of the day following your intuition and exploring at your own pace. You may want to climb the sacred peak of Wayna Picchu, hike to the Temple of the Moon, walk to the Sun Gate or Inca Bridge or further explore the Royal Tomb, the Funerary Rock, the Sacred Plaza, the Condor Temple or the Inihuatana Stone. Later, we return to Aguas Calientes and catch our train and bus back to Urubamba taking time to reflect on the great wonders that just blessed our life. 7 Day 11 Wednesday, May 16 ÑAUPA IGLESIA This is another day in paradise as we awaken to all the sensations of Mother Earth. She beckons us to surrender back to our true nature for nature is our nature! She calls our souls to the purifying essence of the natural elements present in our sanctuary water, fire, earth and air. We connect and play with these elements, returning to our child-like nature of joy, love and freedom. Surrounded by beauty and peace, we feel alive and rejuvenated! We take time to relax and reflect as we pamper our bodies in whatever way it requires. As the sun begins its slow decent, we travel to the Inca Altar, Ñaupa Iglesia to anchor our new knowing of the unity of heaven and Earth. Here at the Temple of Gold or Church of the Ancients, we ask the spirit world to help us manifest our dreams and nurture our souls connection. Later, we close our sacred journey with ceremony and a special dinner. Overnight in Urubamba at the Taypikala Hotel (B, D) Day 12 Thursday, May 17 URUBAMBA to CUSCO to LIMA to HOME Our last morning in Peru is spent in gratitude as we say Tupananchiskama (until we meet again in this or another reality) to our Peruvian friends! Mid-morning, we leave our sanctuary for Cusco. After a tour of the Old City Cusco, you are free to wander to shop and eat until we meet for our final transfer to the Cusco airport. At a pre-arranged time and place, we go to the airport and fly to Lima where we connect with our international flights home. 11 Junia Gail Imel In 2002, Junia Gail Imel took a quantum leap. She left her MBA degree and successful twenty-five year leadership career in advanced technology and education to discover the world from a new perspective her own intuitive awareness.
