3 M E S S A G E F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T This publication, issued by the National Association of Independent Construction Companies (ANCI), is intended to show the increasing importance of ANCI member companies international activity. In recent years, many of these companies, as part of their strategic plans, have made significant progress to access world markets by exporting their activity to foreign countries, carrying out all types of projects in the construction sector, from civil works and building to concessions. Nowadays, those ANCI companies are fully consolidated in numerous countries of Latin America, East Europe and north of Africa while they continue the expansion into Middle East and Asia. When planning the new geographic markets entry, it is essential to have an appropriate fiscal and legal framework for investment. On the one hand, emerging countries represent business opportunities since investment in infrastructure is a crucial factor for a country's economic growth, but on the other hand developed countries offer a more adequate regulatory framework. However, what all the countries have in common is that construction and other related sectors, such as concessions, infrastructures and facilities management and maintenance, services and so on, are an important part of their economies. At this point, special mention should go to the fact that ANCI member companies are among Spanish leading companies in those sectors. This becomes essential when entering a foreign market in competition with indigenous firms or other international firms targeting that market. It is also remarkable the companies philosophy of permanence, providing sustainable value over time by their business performance as well as by establishing a local organization, well integrated in the country, through branches, subsidiary companies or entering into a joint venture with a local business. To conclude, I would like to reiterate that ANCI member companies have the know-how, the experience, the resources and the capability to execute all type of projects across the world, either competing in the world markets or creating strategic partnerships, inside an increasingly global and competitive international business environment. Jaime Lamo de Espinosa President of ANCI 1
