Next spring, please join John T. Carpenter, Curator of Japanese Art, on an immersion into the proudly held traditions of this enigmatic island nation. Discover magnificent temples, remarkable museums, and sacred sites on privileged visits in Nara and Kyoto. TRAVEL HIG HLIG HTS TRAV ELING WITH YOU John Carpenter, Curator of Japanese Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, will lead tours to famous sacred sites and give introductory lectures on Buddhist and Shinto art throughout the trip to enhance the program. John is a highly regarded specialist in Japanese calligraphy, painting, and wood-block prints. He taught the history of Japanese art for more than a decade at the University of London and has lectured at other institutions of higher learning, including the University of Tokyo and Heidelberg University. He has published widely on Japanese art, especially in the areas of premodern calligraphy, Edo-period painting, ukiyo-e prints and surimono. John is managing editor of the Japanese Visual Culture series, and is on the editorial advisory committee of various scholarly journals. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, John received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. OSAKA NARA Wednesday, May 6 Upon arrival in Osaka, transfer to Nara, the first permanent capital of Japan. Accommodations are at the historic Nara Hotel. The remainder of the evening is at leisure. NARA Thursday, May 7 NARA Friday, May 8 Begin today at the temple precinct of Kofuku-ji, which includes the second tallest five story pagoda in Japan. The recently renovated National Treasure Hall exhibits part of the temple s great art collection, including the three-faced, six-armed Ashura Statue. Then stroll through Nara s deer park to see the Great Buddha at the Todai-ji Temple complex. Lunch is at a local restaurant before concluding the afternoon with a curatorled tour of the Nara National Museum. The evening is at leisure. This morning travel to Muro-ji, a 9th-century Shingon Buddhist temple surrounded by dense forest. Known as the Woman s Koya, both genders were permitted to enter the temple. Following lunch, visit Horyu-ji, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Japan s oldest temples, where the monks will greet us. Several of its wooden structures are the oldest of their kind in the world. Continue to Chugu-ji for an exclusive viewing of the statue of Miroku Bosatsu, a national treasure. 4 NARA MT. KOYA Saturday, May 9 This morning explore Naramachi, the old town and former merchant district of Nara. The streets are lined with machiya, narrow townhouses which served as both shop and living quarters during the Heian, Edo, and Meiji periods. Visit the Nara Crafts Museum, showcasing Nara s rich tradition of arts and crafts, especially calligraphy brushes and ink. Lunch is at leisure. Depart in the early afternoon for Mt. Koya, a thriving center for Japanese Buddhism and the headquarters of the Shingon school. Our home for the night will be at a shukubo (temple lodging). This evening, dinner will feature shojin ryori, a traditional vegeterian cuisine commonly served in Buddhist temples. Traditional geishas KUMANO KODO KYOTO Monday, May 11 Depart for Kyoto, stopping en route at the Nachi Waterfall, one of the best-known sacred waterfalls in Japan and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit the Hayatama Taisha shrine, one of Kumano s three important shrines. Continue to Kyoto and check-in at the Ritz Carlton. The evening is at leisure to enjoy one of Kyoto s fine restaurants. KYOTO Tuesday, May 12 Okunoin MT. KOYA KUMANO KUDO Sunday, May 10 Early this morning you may participate in morning prayer with the local monks. Following breakfast, visit Kongobu-ji Temple, known for its vast rock garden, and the Tokugawa Mausoleum. Then see Okunoin, considered Mt. Koya s most magnificent temple and home to the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), founder of the Shingon sect. Many people have chosen to be interred here in order to be close to Kobo Daishi after death, and over 200,000 tombstones line the path to the entrance. Arrive in Kumano Kodo, situated along one of the sacred pilgrimage routes of Japan, for a short walk around the symbolic Gyuba-doji statue and visit the Nakahechi Art Museum. Overnight is at an onsen (hot springs resort). Visit Daitoku-ji, an extensive compound with lovely gardens which embodies Zen Buddhist architecture and design. Continue to Ryoan-ji, a UNESCO World Heritage site. At Fushimi Inari, a stunning shrine complex dedicated to the Shinto god of rice, walk through the many red torii (gates) and admire the view of Kyoto below. Following lunch, visit the studio of Fukami Sueharu, a renowned Japanese ceramic artist. This evening, a special dinner with geisha is arranged. KYOTO Wednesday, May 13 This morning, enjoy an exclusive tea ceremony inside the Sagawa Museum, where teaware masterpieces have been crafted by the Raku family for over 15 generations. After lunch, a special visit is arranged at Ishiyamadera temple, which has been said to be the site where Lady Murasaki Shikibu began writing the Tale of Genji. 5 KYOTO Thursday, May 14 Mt. Hiei is home to the vast Enryaku-ji complex, headquarters of the Tendai Buddhist sect and one of the most significant Japanese monasteries. Explore the temple in the morning before returning to Kyoto for lunch at leisure. This afternoon, admire the magnificent Sanjusangendo Temple. This temple is noted for The Hall of Thirty-Three Bays, a long wooden structure housing 1,001 large wooden statues of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. Located across the street, the recently reopened Kyoto National Museum houses an impressive collection. Celebrate a memorable trip with a dinner of Kyoto s famous kaiseki delicacies tonight. Upon arrival, transfer to the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, located in the heart of Roppongi, a lively international district. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. This evening enjoy a traditional dinner at a local restaurant. TOKYO Saturday, May 16 Spend the day in Nikko, site of the mausoleum of the great shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. Visit Toshogu Shrine, best known for the Three Sacred Monkeys carved above its entry, which demonstrate the three principles of Tendai Buddhism. See the tomb of Ieyasu, at the top of an uphill stone path lined with cedars. Then see Kegon Waterfall in Nikko National Park, made famous by photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. Return to Tokyo in the afternoon. The evening is at leisure. TOKYO Sunday, May 17 This morning, you may wish to join an optional excursion to the Tsukiji Fish Market. Then visit the Roppongi Hills complex for a curatorial tour of the Mori Art Museum. Marvel at the stunning views from the Roppongi hills before tea at the exclusive Roppongi Hills Club. Continue to the studio of Reiko Sudo, where we hope to be greeted by the artist. Following lunch, visit the Suntory Museum, designed by the internationally renowned architect Kengo Kuma. Gather this evening for a traditional robatayaki dinner. TOKYO NEW YORK Monday, May 18 Transfer to the airport for the flights home. 7 T ERMS & C ONDITIONS AIRFARE Academic Arrangements Abroad (AAA) will be pleased to assist with air travel arrangements for this program, including specially negotiated group airfare when available, suggested flights, or individual requests for a processing fee of $40 per person. Complete details will be provided in your confirmation mailing. PAYMENT SCHEDULE A deposit of $2,000 per person, payable to Academic Arrangements Abroad, of which $350 is non-refundable for administrative fees, is required with the reservation application. Final payment, by check only, must be received 120 days prior to departure. HEALTH All participants must be in good health. This program involves extensive walking over uneven surfaces and climbing stairs at monuments and other locations not handicapped accessible and climbing in and out of various conveyances. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation. PHOTOGRAPHY Photographs or, in some cases, videotapes of participants of Travel with the Met trips may be used for educational and promotional purposes by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. INSURANCE TRIP CANCELLATION / EMERGENCY MEDICAL EVACUATION / BAGGAGE / ACCIDENT AND SICKNESS INSURANCE IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. CANCELLATION PENALTIES ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED. AAA will send an insurance application upon receipt of deposit, although you may select any insurer of your choice. CHANGES IN ITINERARY & COSTS The itinerary is subject to change at the discretion of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) and AAA. All prices quoted are based on prevailing fuel prices, airfares, and currency exchange rates in effect at time of brochure printing and are subject to change without notice. Deviations from the scheduled itinerary are at the expense of the individual. RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE The participation of the Met is limited to educational sponsorship of the program described in this brochure (The Program). AAA acts only as an agent for the participant with respect to transportation, accommodations, and all other services, relating to The Program. AAA, the Met, and/or their agents assume no responsibility or liability for any act, error, or omission, or for any injury, loss, accident, delay, or irregularity which may be occasioned by reason of any defect in any aircraft, ship, train, bus, or other carrier, or through neglect or default of any subcontractor or other third party, which may be used wholly or in part in the performance of their duty to the participants of The Program. The passage ticket issued by the carrier is the sole contract between the participant and the carrier. Nor will AAA or the Met and/or their agents be responsible for loss, injury, damages, or expenses to persons or property, due to illness, weather, strikes, local laws, hostilities, wars, terrorist acts, acts of nature, or other such causes in connection with The Program or anything beyond their reasonable control. AAA is not responsible for transportation or other program delays and changes, nor additional expenses or loss of time that may be incurred. In the event it becomes necessary or advisable for the comfort or well-being of the participants, or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary at any time, without notice to the participants, such alterations will be made without penalty to AAA or the Met. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the participants. Baggage and peronal effects are the sole responsibility of the participant at all times. The Met and AAA reserve the right to accept or decline any person as a participant at any time, or to require any participant to withdraw from The Program at their own expense when such an action is determined by AAA or the Met to be in the best interest of the participant s health and safety, or the general welfare of the other participants. CANCELLATION POLICY AAA must strictly adhere to its cancellation policy to offset costs incurred prior to the commencement of The Program, which may include but are not limited to: advance payments to land operators; ship charters; communication expenses; development/promotional expenses; and the loss of time that might have permitted resale of reserved space. All cancellations must be made in writing to the offices of AAA and are subject to a $350 non-refundable administrative fee. All refunds are limited to amounts actually received by AAA and are the sole responsibility of AAA; the Met shall have no liability for refunds. At the time AAA receives written notification of cancellation, the following cancellation charges will apply: cancellations received between 120 and 91 days prior to departure, 20 percent of the program cost per person; those received between 90 and 61 days before departure, 50 percent of the program cost per person; no refunds will be given for cancellations received within 60 days of departure. No refunds are given for cancellation on or after the day of departure, or for unused portions of the tour, for any reason. Air cancellation charges, if any, will be assessed in accordance with airline regulations. All group fare tickets must be issued no less than 30 days prior to departure. NOTE: Neither AAA nor the Met shall be liable for any airline cancellation penalties incurred by the purchase of a non-refundable ticket. In the case of a cancellation due to shortage of participants, AAA will attempt to notify all participants at least 45 days prior to departure. However, AAA reserves the right to cancel The Program prior to departure for any reason and, in such case, reimbursement of refundable costs of the trip by AAA shall constitute full settlement with the participant. In the unlikely event that a dispute arises between a participant and AAA or the Met, the following conditions will apply: (a) the dispute will be settled by binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in New York, NY; (b) the dispute will be governed by New York Law; (c) the maximum amount of recovery to which a participant shall be entitled under any and all circumstances will be the sum of all monies actually received from the participant by AAA. The participant agrees that this is a fair and reasonable limitation on the damages, of any sort whatsoever, that a participant may suffer.
