4 highlights of the area Casciana Terme The Thermal Pearl of Italy The history of the town, which in Medieval records often appears with the names of Bagno ad Acqua, was effectively interwoven with that of its thermal rising, already in use in Roman times and was described at the time as an uncovered bath, twice the size of the municipal baths, with two entrances and large flat stones on the bottom. Rising through the earth at a temperature of 36 C, Casciana Terme s water has always been considered one of the healthiest thermal waters in Italy and it has been studied and analysed by famous doctors and chemists for its exceptional therapeutic properties. The hospitality is still one the most significant characteristics of Casciana, which is portrayed as a pearl immersed in the green Pisan hills. The discovery of its villages filled with charm and mysteries of the past, the excursions to the houses in the countryside and the farms hidden amongst the small hills, together with the friendliness, sincerity and good cuisine are moments which shouldn t be missed if you are to completely appreciate the merits of Casciana and its spas. Volterra Volterra The magic and mysterious city of Volterra has its roots in three thousand years of history. It is possible to find evidence and traces from every historical period which gives the artistic city a unique aspect. The ancient city walls, the imposing Porta all Arco, the Necropolis of Marmini and the numerous archeological finds conserved in the Museo Etrusco Guarnacci like the Ombra della Sera with its unique profile, the funeral urns and the finely crafted jewellery, bear testimony of the Etruscan period. The Theatre of Vallebona survives from the period of Augustus and suggests the importance of Volterra under Roman domination. Today the city conserves above all a Medieval aspect not only for the 12th century city walls but also because of the urban layout with narrow streets, palaces, tower houses and churches. From this period are the superb palaces of Minucci Solaini, Incontri-Viti and Inghirami, which are built into the Medieval city, the imposing Fortezza Medicea and the Convent of San Girolamo. San Gimignano San Gimignano San Gimignano is a small walled medieval hill town, about a 35-minute drive northwest of Siena or southwest of Florence. It is famous for its medieval architecture, especially its towers, which may be seen from several miles outside the town. While in other cities, such as Bologna or Florence, most or all of their towers have been brought down due to wars, catastrophes, or urban renewal, San Gimignano has managed to conserve fourteen towers of varying height which have become its international symbol. There are many churches in the town: the two main ones are the Collegiata, formerly a cathedral, and Sant Agostino, housing a wide representation of artworks from some of the main Italian renaissance artists. The Communal Palace, once seat of the podestà, is currently home of the Town Gallery, with works by Pinturicchio, Benozzo Gozzoli, Filippino Lippi, Domenico di Michelino, Pier Francesco Fiorentino, and others. From Dante s Hall in the palace, access may be made to a Majesty fresco by Lippo Memmi, as well as the Torre del Podestà or Torre Grossa, 1311, which stands fifty-four meters high. The heart of the town contains the four squares, Piazza della Cisterna, Piazza Duomo where the Collegiata is located, Piazza Pecori, and Piazza delle Erbe. The main streets are Via San Matteo and Via San Giovanni, which cross the city from north to south.

5 Teatro del Silenzio Il Teatro del Silenzio is a majestic concert of master singing, dancing and other performing arts. It is held once a year in an open-air theatre that stands between an artificial and natural structure, exploiting the shape of the Valdera hills, and lying silent for the remaining 364 days of the year. It is a gift that Andrea Bocelli, world ambassador for Italian singing, has bestowed to the land where he was born. The concert is held in the Teatro del Silenzio in Lajatico and features, in addition to Andrea Bocelli, prestigious artists from both the international and Italian performers such as Academy awarded conductor Nicola Piovani, international recording artist Noa and the Teatro della Scala s ètoile, Roberto Bolle. Castelfalfi Golf Club Castelfalfi Golf Club is situated near the ancient medieval hamlet of Castelfalfi, in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, and is the perfect place to play golf during a visit to Tuscany. It is the perfect place for those who want to play golf in typical Tuscan countryside where green grassland and cultivated sunflowers alternate with ancient farmhouses and rows of cypresses. The Castelfalfi (18 hole, par 73) Golf Course is considered the most difficult of Italy. In Tuscany, thanks to a warm climate, and surrounded by the beautiful landscapes, it is possible to play at Castelfalfi all the year long, although the best period to play golf in Tuscany is in Spring and Autumn when the temperatures are not so high as in Summer. Vernaccia di San Gimignano Vernaccia is a white Italian wine, made from the Vernaccia grape, produced in and around the Italian hill town of San Gimignano in Tuscany. Since the Renaissance it has been considered one of Italy s finest white wines. The production area of Vernaccia di San Gimignano is restricted to the hilly territory of the commune of the same name in Siena province. The history of the community goes back to the Etruscan period and, since the beginning, agriculture has always played an important role in the local economy. Vernaccia di San Gimignano, made from the grape of the same name, is one of the best-known wines in Italy and the world. Vernaccia di San Gimignano was highly appreciated in the past and among its many admirers was Pope Martin IV ( ). It appears that the pontiff was extremely fond of a dish based on eels and Vernaccia. In 1487, Ludovico il Moro of Milan ordered 200 fiaschi of the wine on the occasion of the marriage of Isabella, daughter of King Alfonso II of Naples, to his nephew Gian Galeazzo. The long list of significant tributes was crowned in 1966, when the Vernaccia di San Gimignano was accorded the privilege of being the first Italian wine to receive a Denominazione di Origine Controllata, that was then upgraded to Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita in 1993.
