Following the eruption of the volcano mount Vesuvius in the year 79 AD, Pompeii lay buried and forgotten for hundreds of years. The town is high on the list of Wonders of the World and the excavations which began in the 18th century are still being carried out today. Our guide will take you slowly through some of the ancient streets of Pompeii where you can see Baths, Forums and villas built by the prosperous Romans in the year 80 BC. Marvel at the fabulously preserved frescoes which adorned the walls and floors of the villas. Explore the legendary Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, the only active volcano in continental Europe! HERCULANEUM 39 ADULTS 31 HALF POMPEII VULCAN VESUVIUS 49 ADULTS 39,50 Herculaneum was a residential coastal town which has been superbly preserved due to the fact that it was covered in volcanic mud during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The guide will give people the chance to view the town from above before heading down and beginning the guided tour which lasts about an hour. The buildings have been so well preserved that you can walk down the streets pretty much exactly as the Romans would have done over 2000 years ago! There are still original timbers showing in the buildings and clay pots stored as they would have been at the time of the eruption. The tour takes in many of the most important sites including the public baths with their well preserved frescoes and mosaics along with the shops and gymnasium and much more. It is all in all a fascinating tour of possibly one of the best preserved examples of a Roman residential town in the world, brought to life by the years of study and knowledge of our guides. Return to resort around 1 pm. LOCAL GUIDE HEADSET WEDNES AT 8:10 AM AT 8:10 AM ACHILLE LAURO Escorted by the guide, clients will explore the main features of the ancient city including the baths, bakeries and theatres just to name a few. The city of Pompeii is usually visited in the morning although this can change during high season. After lunch in Pompeii, the coach departs for Mount Vesuvius. The coach takes the guests to mt.1000 and if the customers wish, they walk the rest themselves. The customers purchase their entrance tickets. There is a man at the foot of the volcano who has walking sticks which the customers can hire for a small charge to help them walk up to the crater. Upon reaching the crater, a local guide will walk them around the crater (we cannot guarantee this service will always be available). Customers then have free time to walk around. Hercolaneum was a residential town without Pompeii s commercial importance, surrounded by the villas of the wealthy Romans. When the catastrophe of 79 AD occurred Hercolaneum was submerged under a torrent of mudd and lava that hardened into a soft tufa (a kind of course rock) that preserved many of the timber features and household objects which can be seen today. A large portion of the old Hercolaneum is still buried under the modern town and even today excavations are going on to discover what treasures lie buried under the rock, to the extent that some families are being rehoused so work can continue. Admire the breathtaking Amalfi Coast from the best vantage point on this mini-drive! Return to resort approx /17.00 LOCAL GUIDE HEADSET (IN HERCULANEUM) WEDNES AT 8:10 AM AT 8:10 AM ACHILLE LAURO Departing from Sorrento in the morning. The coach joins the Amalfi coastal road which is one of the most stunning coastal drives in Europe. The scenery is superb, looking out over the Mediterranean and along the coastline as the road twists and turns its way towards the town of Positano (approx. 20 minutes from Sorrento). The town is built on different levels from the main road all the way down to sea level, giving the image of a waterfall of buildings cascading down to the sea. As the coach can t stop here guest can enjoy the views and take photos from the bus. This spectacular journey continues with fabulous views all the way to Amalfi (approximately 1 hour). Arrive in Amalfi around 10am depending on traffic. Guests have 2 hours free time in Amalfi where a guided boat trip along the coast may be possible dependant on availability and weather conditions. Customers can also visit the magnificent 9th century Cathedral which proudly dominates the main square of Amalfi, wander through the narrow streets of the town and browse the many shops or enjoy a coffee in one of the cafes around Amalfi. After lunch stop, the excursion carries on to Ravello which is situated on the hillside above Amalfi. This is where Wagner was inspired to write part of one of his operas and it is from here that you can enjoy the best views of the Amalfi coastline looking over to Minori, Maiori and beyond. No holiday in Sorrento is complete without a trip to the enchanting island of Capri. Spend an unforgettable day in the little treasure of the Mediterranean! CASSINO 46 ADULTS 37 CAPRI ANACAPRI BLUE GROTTO 135 PER PERSON Monte Cassino Abbey has unjustifiably escaped the attention of many British visitors to the Sorrento area and is well worth a visit. Situated at the top of a hill it commands spectacular views over the city of Cassino. The Abbey was founded in 529BC and was looked upon as a place of holiness, culture and art for which it became renowned on a worldwide level. Steeped in history it has been destroyed and rebuilt 4 times in its 1400 years. The most recent and infamous destruction was during the 1944 battle of Monte Cassino in World War Two. Because of its strategic position it was occupied by the German forces and used as a vantage point to attack the allied forces advancing from the South of Italy. Upon leaving the Abbey we head down to visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery. Many of the soldiers who fell during the battle are buried here. This cemetery is beautifully maintained and overlooked by the Abbey. After free time for lunch there is a visit to the World War II museum. The museum offers many different exhibitions commemorating those, of all nationalities, who lost their life in the battle. Departing the museum at pm the trip arrives back in Sorrento at approximately 5pm. LOCAL GUIDE MON AT 7:20 AM AT 7:20 AM ACHILLE LAURO Meet your expert local guide in Sorrento and embark on high-speed boat toward the Island of Capri. Arrived in Capri you ll take a boat ride to the popular and dreamy Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto), where sunlight passes into an underwater cavity and shines through the seawater, creating a magical blue reflection. After returning to the port you ll board on a minibus for a scenic drive to Anacapri, 918 feet (280 meters) above the sea level. You ll see wonderful views of the bay of Naples before continuing to a local restaurant for lunch. After lunch you can take advantage of some free time to explore Capri at your leisure or go shopping. Then you ll return to Marina Grande and embark back to Sorrento. ISCHIA TROPICAL THERMAL PARK OR MORTELLA GARDENS 95 PER PERSON Departure and arrival to ischia, where customers will have a guided tour of the island of ischia, by bus. Then, guests will be divided, those going to the thermal spas and those going to the Mortella gardens. Located in Sant Angelo with fantastic views over one of Ischia s most quaint fishing villages, the tropical thermal park has 9 different temperature pools, roman grottoes, spa, saltwater pool, indoor thermal pool and a beauty farm where customers can pamper themselves or just relax. The mortella garden, started in 1956, was created on the site of a gigantic stone quarry, and designed by English landscape designer Russell Page, containing many beautiful and innovative concepts. Extending over an area of 16,000 square metres, these beautifully landscaped gardens complete with pools and fountains have thousands of unusual, rare specimens of Mediterranean climate plants from around the world. Guests will be transported back to Ischia port in time for the 5.20pm boat back to Sorrento. This is the only boat back to Sorrento from Ischia. In Sorrento guide will put guests back on the minibuses to their hotels.
